PORSCHE 997 TURBO MAJOR SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE PART 3; Pinning the camshafts P0011

Part 3 outlines the camshaft inner sleeve problem that plagues the 997.1 Turbo engine. The dreaded P002x DTC is one you never want to get. Even if a inner sleeve is partially rotated, it is a condition that you want to address if the engine is removed. This preventative, or in my case, needed repair should be carried out regardless of mileage or age. A modification is also made to the power steering feed house and reservoir. #PORSCHE #997TURBO #911TURBO #MEZGER #FLAT6

As a Porsche tech in another life, I can def appreciate the quality of your work. Thanks for the vids. Armchair wrenching is pleasurable too. :-)) I also had a good chuckle at your comments. As an ex-tech I can def feel your frustrations. But you do realize that variants of the "convoluted, over-engineered" motor were responsible for 16 of Porsche's 19 LeMans wins... (and yes, I misquoted you as you were referring to VarioCam, but still ;-p). Honda has only had one class win at LeMans, IIRC.

Appreciate it! I'm a Honda Technician and so I do appreciate their simplistic approach to engineering engine technology introduced and pioneered by other manufacturers; however, am not nearly as passionate about HONDA as I am with PORSCHE. Though the Mezger derived watercooled GT1 engines are now over a decade old, I can see the forward thinking and engineering that they blessed it with. Though over-engineered and convoluted... it ... just.. works. And works well. Absolutely love owning and working on this car and really appreciate your kind words and that my quality of work did shine through in some aspect. Cheers!

@@NSXavier997 Honda has a very good chance at winning the driver's and possibly manufacturer's title in F1 this year - also def a company with a rich motorsports heritage. I watched your vids with great interest because my turbo's motor will likely be split one of these upcoming winters (not this one) for rods. I quit working on Porsches around the time the Boxster was introduced, so watching you is learning ;-p I pinned my water lines for the same reasons you did. Sound reasoning - and it's not difficult to see the quality in your work.

Hello Xavier. I really enjoy your videos working on the 997 turbo. I am currently experiencing the same issue on my 996 turbo. Could you please share the contact of the shop that pinned your camshaft?

Hey Xavier I’m a follower of yours who owns the same car, a 2008 997 turbo, I have a loud rattle noise on cold start only for about 2-3 seconds then it goes away. You ever get that with your car? I’m a retired professional auto tech of 40 years. My guess is it’s the timing chain tensioners what’s your opinion? I love this car but now that I’m retired I can’t afford to have it repaired so I’ll try to fix it my self

Thanks for the follow. The symptom you describe is completely normal and has been documented on various 997 Turbo specific sub forums as a normal characteristic. I do experience the same, but only after long periods of the car sitting. It is very infrequent. People have tried to fix this problem but to my knowledge, have not posted any confirmed repairs. The symptom always seems to linger even after component replacement. If I had to scientifically guess what is causing the noise, I’m going to have to say that it is excessive tolerance in the cam sprocket gears and chain. The reason I theorize this to be the case is formed from first-hand experience. Honda/Acura has an engine (K24) that exhibits the same exact symptom and their repair is to replace the VTC actuator (intake cam sprocket) and tensioner. I have done this repair on many Honda and Acura vehicles and the noise does indeed go away thereafter. KZread search “K24 VTC rattle” and you’ll find many videos that show what I have described above. Although I can’t prove it until I actually put a repair into practice, but I’d be most confidently willing to bet that the cause for the rattle noise on startup on our MEZGER engines is caused by increased tolerance in the Cam sprocket and chain, and the first repair that I would try is to replace Bank 1 and Bank 2 intake cam sprockets (Variocam Actuators).

And honestly, the sleeve still looked about as much spun as it was in the first place. Did he even do anything else other than what I commented you recon?

@@aolsen6874 Definitely not "as much spun as it was in the first place". This is a common failure on 997.1 Turbo's. See my build thread on Rennlist for more in depth photographs. Todd removed the sleeve and re orientated it back in its proper location to have an oil orifice that is 100% open.

@@aolsen6874 if you have access to a scan tool that reads live data you can log your cam phase and see how “in time” the engine is and if any cam slippage or chain stretch has occurred. You can also load the engine and watch your advance/retard action and compare the values on Bank1 and 2 to see if you have a lazy solenoid and / or rotated cam sleeve that is causing poor oil flow
