PORSCHE 997 TURBO MAJOR SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE PART 4; CAMSHAFT INSTALLATION AND ENGINE TIMING

Part 4 outlines the critical installation procedure taken to install and time the camshafts in relation to the crankshaft. It is noted that true TDC1 and TDC4 must be identified and marked to properly time cylinder banks 1 and 2. New hexagon and fillister screws are used for cam sprockets, as well as new sealing rings for chain tensioners. All torque specifications must be followed. #PORSCHE #997TURBO #911TURBO #MEZGER #FLAT6

Nice work on the timing seemed like Voodoo magic at one time.

Hi! Do you know where to buy the timing tool? Do you have a part number for it? Thanks

Thank you! The tool used in the video is made by BAUM, I believe. They were rented to me from a friend and RL member. The PORSCHE OE tool is $2k, and my local dealerships would NOT lend them to me despite me offering a deposit to cover the cost of the tool if I didn't return it along with a rental fee.

@@carnynja9966 I used the PORSCHE factory workshop manual. The wsm is translated from German to English, so a bit of “deciphering” is needed. But for the most part, it’s a pretty good manual.

Good job! What were the b1 and b2 camshaft deviations angles after the work was complete with buam tool? I see that the baum tool you are using is slightly different design than the factory. I do have the factory, would been happy to loan you mine.

Yup. I wish I knew about your shop and channel back when I did the job!! I would have definitely taken you up on that offer. The factory tool is $$$. What I did was identified crank and cam positioning in TDC1 & TDC4 before taking anything apart and made sure the fixtures “slid into place”. Once I did that I knew that just as long as I put it back together in this exact position, the engine should at least run. What I wish I had done was take an initial cam deviation reading before beginning work. Final deviation #’s at idle were bank1 -2.8748 and Bank2 -3.5155.

@@NSXavier997 That's one way to do it, pretty good deviation readings.

Can someone explain what is cam deviations means, until what range it should be ok ?

@@vicky-nc3to The bank 1 and bank 2 intake camshaft angles in relation to the crankshaft. This reading is referenced from the cam position sensors. It is a good data point to study that will tell you a lot about whether the engines timing chain is potentially stretched, or if the cam gears have slipped. General rule of thumb is that you want both values to be as close to each other as possible. You also want them to be in synchronization when dry revving or applying load. I have read and been told that a deviation of up to 10* is acceptable, and the engine will still run in that condition, although I would never want a reading of that variance.
