    Illustrates two things to me... 1. Build a relationship with your workshop. This happens over time and with good experiences. It also comes from understanding that, with these older cars, things don't always go according to plan and aren't always solved first go. 2. With that relationship in place, you can then have honest dialogue about those preventative maintenance issues. Can something wait? Should it be tackled immediately? My philosophy on preventative maintenance is that, if a problem (or future problem) is identified, address it sooner rather than later - particularly if you drive your car often. Great vid Lee!

    You're bang on, Andy. In this instance Wrightune went through my car last autumn as I asked what needs doing in the next year, so we came up with a plan of what's urgent, what can wait, and what can be done at the same time etc. It's helped with some financial planning, even if things snowballed slightly! Thanks as always for the kind words, I really appreciate it coming from someone who makes great vids themselves.

    My 996 just passed 150K (miles) and we’ve recently done a top end rebuild. I would recommend that everyone keep an eye on the hydraulic valve adjusters. This is a non serviceable part but I had one fail and it was a lot of time and effort to get back on the road. Btw after checking the price of the parts from Porsche I checked to see if they were made out of solid gold. They weren’t.

    love this! It takes SO much time to just figure out all the “while I’m in there”-jobs and the bills just run up. I need to do a rear main seal job due to a small weeping leak. SO we’re looking at IMS bearing, clutch and flywheel (this comes with its own WIIT-jobs like clutch fork, ball pin and seals), rear case bolts, transmission mount, oil change (almost due anyway) and the list goes on.....all because I need to change a €18,- RMS.....😄

    It took me a few videos of Brits saying "hach" to realize they were saying "H". We still love you over here in the US! Lol One thing about Porsches is that all the mechanical bits on a regular sized car are all squeezed into a much smaller space so working on them is much harder. Can anti-seize be used instead of grease, silicone grease? Did one of the bleeders fail or a connector on a line?

  • @mikekcarey

    This is so so relevant to me as My 996.1 is in the garage now as it had a coolant leak in the front of the car so limped her to my indie with my water bottle in the passenger seat. Left her with garage hoping it was just a hose but No it was the dreaded corrosion so both front rads need replacing then I get your same call we have a oil leak under your gear box. Galvanic corrosion between the Ali box and the SS hose so now I need new pipes But the corrosion is so bad removing the old oil pipes splits the gear box casing so now I need a new gear box !!!!! You hear endlessly about IMS worries the real issue for a 20 plus year old car is corrosion corrosion corrosion. This is going to be expensive but like you said prevention now will save money later so fitting a new oil separator and IMS seal while engine is out. Just remember most cars built in 1999 have been crushed into cubes by now so lucky we can still enjoy these amazing analog machines. Shame about the size of the bill though 😐

    Just curious maybe someone else can answer. How come engine mounts failed from lowering the engine? Shouldn't the engine mounts be unbolted before lowering the engine? Also, what corrosion would there be preventing a brake fluid flush? Calipers are aluminum so they don't rust

  • @pjay3028

    @pjay3028

    3 жыл бұрын

    I expect that the nuts and bolts on the engine mounts were rusted and took a lot of "persuasion" to take off. This led to damage to the old and weak engine mounts themselves because the bolt runs right through the middle of the mount. Flushing the brake fluid prevents water suspended in the brake fluid from corroding the brake lines from the inside.

  • @9WERKSTV

    @9WERKSTV

    3 жыл бұрын

    From Chris at Wrightune: Engine mounts: The nut was seized on the stud. Undoing this tore the rubber part of the mount which was old and badly perished causing them to leak. The Calipers: aluminium does corrode. Also steel and aluminium react with each other. The bleed nipples/valves are steel. Often these are corroded into the caliper. When you undo them they can tear all the thread out and the seat on which the valve seals. You can run into the same problem when removing the brake pipes which screw into the caliper. I hope that helps!

    I disagree on the grease, you shouldn't grease where it isn't specified, at least not without someone adjusting all the torque specs which needs some math. There's no reason to anyway, so long as that bolt and nut are only threaded on once there is a factory anti corrosion that works well.

  • @N911GT2
