*Porsche 911 Whale Tail* Aerodynamics
Is the Porsche 911 Turbo with the whale tail aerodynamic? How did the whale tail affect the 911's drag coefficient and downforce production?

Peak content right here, who needs cannards and a splitter when you can have a tonge in your car?
The Mercedes 190e Evo II had a body kit that BMW thought wouldn't work. It did and the legend says BMW redesigned their wind tunnel. I really want to see a sim on that!

Thanks for the idea! We'll see if we can get a good model of it.
Fascinating analysis, but you overlooked one big thing...that's not the Porsche "Whale Tail" spoiler. That's the "Tea Tray", which encloses the intercooler on the 3.3L version of the 930 (starting 1978). The non-intercooled 1975-1977 3.0L 930, along with some naturally aspirated models like the 911SC (as an optional extra) had the "Whale Tail", which is much thinner because it is not enclosing a large volume between the upper surface and what would otherwise be the decklid. The largest version of the "Whale Tail" was on the 1974-1975 Carrera RSR 3.0 racing version of the 911.

Yes, the tail to act as a fairing, but also as an intake for the intercooler which is not considered in the CFD calculation and could drastically change the results. I'm actually a little surprised because I always believed that this grille was there to extract the air coming out of the intercooter like on an F40. But looking more closely, the pattern of the grid and the engine bay layout shows that it's an intake. 🤔
The whale tail wasn't removed on the newer Turbo models, on aircooled 964 and 993 it still covered large intercooler sitting on top of the engine, and on later Watercooled generations the overall shape of the car is greatly improved and rear spoiler (it's a spoiler and not a wing airfoil) has been repositioned and reshaped more efficiently, paired with active aero and to this day a very important piece of 911 Turbo styling and aero

The 1951-53 Hudson Hornet would be a good one. They were incredibly streamlined for their era, one of the first NASCAR legends and one managed to hit 120+ mph at bonneville with only 210 or so horsepower. Seems like it has pretty good aero.

Im not an aerodynamicist, but I’m a Vfx artist working in Houdini and spend a lot of time looking at slices of voxel fluid/smoke sims like this. Love your channel, wish I had time to learn physically grounded software like this for farting around with 😊
Something I notice commonly, is that this model (the tea-tray) and the whale tail get misidentified. If possible, it would be interesting to see if the true whale tale was able to fix any of the issues you pointed out with the tea tray, especially the lack of end plates and the widened surface area. Excellent video!

Hey, a big reason for the fluid flow on the upper part of the car is the naturally aspirated engine and the big wing would open space for the intakes leading to the engine, that's cool (correct me if I'm wrong)
@PremierAerodynamics
21 күн бұрын
That might be one way of getting air into the intakes. I haven't had the chance to test different configurations of this, but if you remove the whale tail, you'd have faster moving flow around there and potentially a greater mass flow rate through the intakes. But, maybe the whale tail was a good compromise for them between the downforce needed and the air needed for the intakes.
Amazing video. Thought it would be AI generated from such a small channel but it was a nice surprise.

I wonder how much of the bodywork changes on the RUF CTR contributed to it being able to do 342kph in 1987. I suppose it using the narrow variant of the 911 body was a significant contribution.

There were quite a few improvements. The air dam seems better and the wheel arches aren’t nearly as flared, for example. The ride height seems lower which is better for downforce and hitting higher speeds.
I was just thinking, what happens, when you get more and more views and thus a lot more suggestions, of what car or other object you should test next. I believe, you would need a team of people setting all the simulations up. And you would, more and more, be the voice of the channel, because you would be pushing out multiple videos a day to keep up with the thousands of different cars and other things.
