Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 - The Final Petrol Powered Cayman

The Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 might just be the best value sports car on the market today thanks to one very special ingredient, the engine.
The special engine is worth talking about because what follows the 718 is going to be an EV version of the Cayman and Boxster, so let's enjoy making a Cayman howl while we still can.
The 4.0-litre flat-six engine is a variant as found in the globally celebrated Cayman GT4.
In this video, John Marcar walks and talks through the 718 GTS and works through the true cost of buying one of the last-ever petrol-powered Cayman models.

Don't believe the hype! As long as there's a market for petrol engines in the Cayman, Porsche will be making them.

Porsche will be punished for removing ICE from this car.

Turbo engines are much better in Cayman, imediate torque is what matters. Waiting on torque in naturally aspirated engines is boring.

Thanks for making waiting time for my 718 BGTS just a small bit easier - the production process ended yesterday, so hopefully I’ll get hold of it really soon.

I wonder if Porsche is second-guessing the EV Cayster at this point. The market has turned a little against EVs of late and looking at the spy shots of the EV car, it's clearly based on the same platform as the 992 (not a huge surprise, Caysters and 911s have always shared a platform). It probably wouldn't be a catastrophic amount of work to do an ICE version. Just a thought.

Good vid, the GT4 commentary was a bit out of date though, those were never limited models like the GT3/GT4 RS are - though you're right you still can't buy one, but that's because orders closed about 12 months ago and they're discontinued. Unless you meant the GT4 RS, which is a different car completely and nowhere near just £10k more...

I just got my CGTS (replaced my 981S). Can confirm it's the real deal and I can't wait to give it the beans after break-in. I do think that Porsche (like most majors like Ford and Toyota) are going to walk back their rush into EV.

Worth noting that the 420nm figure is limited by the rating of the gearbox. Would be a bit higher otherwise. It's weird that Porsche never commissioned an uprated version from the supplier with a bit more capacity for handling torque.

Brilliant video John/Driven 👌 Good Cayman memories always hark back to Fuel faction days with you in the 981 GT4, think that was circa 2017, brilliant times!

Great content and lovely to hear you describe the delicacy of the driving experience. I find this almost completely forgotten as most seem to obsess about 1/4 mile and 0-60.

Nice video! After a 6 month wait, my 2024 CGTS arrived in December and is now broken in. Agreed, it’s an amazing car! After owning over 20 BMWs, this is my first Porsche. I wanted to buy a new manual car before they’re all gone, and planned to order an M2. But I feel very fortunate that I got a GTS 4.0 allocation. I chose a “Ferrari spec” in Carmine Red over Espresso/Cognac leather, since all GT4s and nearly all GTS’s come with black interiors.

Great video 🤓!!! Last year in February 2023, I acquired my new 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 which has the 4L NA flat six cylinder engine (same unit as a GT4) and a PDK gearbox. Power output (394 bhp) and torque (317 lb-ft) are a nice match to this car's sensible curb weight (~3200 lbs). The color is Gentian Blue metallic with a black/chalk all-leather interior and silver wheel rims. It's definitely an entertaining driver's car!

There are plenty of dongles that convert the wired CarPlay to wireless. Yes, would be better if built in, but not a big issue to fix

I agree. Same way manufacturers make those fancy motorized carriages for fancy snobs instead of well proven horse carriages that served for thousands of years.

Nice video Driven team! I think I'll just purchase the sporty steering wheel on it's own...without control buttons...or the rest of the car 😂 Might look nice on the coffee table 😊 Amusing to hear John's inner child giggling at the end too, after putting pedal to metal 😇

Worth noting that the GTS interior package gives you the extended leather to the door cards and dash. It's decent value in terms of the impact is makes to the cabin. If feels pretty low rent with the plastic dash and door cards.
