I don't think we ever get over loss no matter how many pass away. Each one is so special with their own unique personality that endears them to us...they occupy a place in our heart that's left empty and aching when they pass away.

I've rescued several bassets. One never barked, one had been "de-barked" (so cruel), but tried sometimes. One was very talkative, but not barky so much, especially when she was scolding me. The one I have now cries all the time still, but that's how she got attention in the puppy mill and I haven't been able to break her of it. They all like to cuddle. Basset intelligence is measured by how well they get you to do exactly what they want you to do, when they want you to do it. Enjoy your baby. You have to have a good sense of humor to be owned by a basset.

We have had two Basset Hounds. Currently, Emily is nearly 8 years old. Hands down the most affections breed I have ever experienced. VERY motivated by food for sure. Also, the most verbal/vocal breed. She "talks" a lot. Has many different vocalization with different meanings. Both of our Bassets have been the kindest, gentlest, people loving dogs we've had in our family. The ear situation improves with age, but the bottoms of the ears do continue to get pretty dirty lol. Great dogs. Excellent with all ages. Can be pretty darn stubborn but easily swayed with "snacks" lol.

Lee, you are one of the rare and exceptional human beings in this world. I can just imagine the mammoth task you took on to start Asher House and I am sure there are days you don’t want to put the sanctuary hat on. You have done an amazing job of transforming the Asher House from when you first moved to your current location. I am sure you have a good support network when things get tough, especially when you lose one of your babies. Poppy is adorable and it is deplorable that grown adults who got her thought it acceptable to allow their children to cover her in marker pen and then have the cheek to say she was too much to handle. 🤬. Well it was fated for you to be her dad and in the videos I watch on Instagram, she is thriving. Sending love and light xx

Can you imagine these children when they are in their teens? Clearly they've never been told no, or held accountable for bad behaviour. Their parents ALLOWED them to abuse a helpless, innocent puppy! I can't even wrap my head around that. When the traumatized puppy, who cried all the time because of the abuse it was suffering from at the hands of their children, became a burden to the parents, they blamed Poppy. There must have been ALOT more than coloring with markers that poor Poppy endured to cry like she did. Thank God for Lee, she is living her best life, loved by him and the pack, free from harm. ❤

Why do you think I inmidiatly felt in love with Poppy? First, listening his crys and seeing her afraidness so inusual in this breed, had broken and stolen my heart with the needing of protection and love. Bassethounds are so socially, playfully, full of good vibes with every dog (they adore to be part of a pack) and human, also a nap lover. Sometimes grumpy if they want more cuddles or barking if they want a treat (they also adore to eat a bit to much) or they stay alone, they don't like to be alone. They are tracking followers, like the Bloodhounds, and the long ears helps them to remove the smell from earth direct to their nose. They are stubborns if they find a smell to follow and shows his independent side as a hunting dog, but also are very dependent from his human. They needed to be cleaned ears and the wrinkles of his double chin because they usually get dirty, like with an oiled smelly greasy, easy to clean with a damp cloth or towel (very often). But their character is so wonderful, so sweet that everyone get enloved with them when they know them. Poppy seams so happy in your pack, a lot of friends to play with, nice walks with smells being part of the pack, a lot of love, cuddles and kisses from you, she is in paradise !!!! (It's obvious that I am a Bassethound lover 💘, and this growing salami had seduced you, too, 🤭). Carefully with long stairs with steps to protect her back and spine 🙏. 😘 for Poppys wet nose and for you. Love u Poppy 💘

I’m so thrilled to see Poppy growing and thriving and so confident and joyful! Her rescue video broke me. Basset Hounds are highly intelligent hounds. They are also extremely sensitive. They need a lot of nurturing and attention as puppies. When you brought her home she was so shut down and traumatized. Which makes it clear that she was likely crated and isolated for the majority of her early days. I still just seethe with anger when I think about the fact that she was covered in marker. She was abused and neglected. Which is why she cried so much. She was terrified and literally crying out for comfort. To see her now trotting happily trotting along, nose to the ground, tail flag flying…it brings tears to my eyes and joy to my basset mom heart. I’m grateful the family realized that they had no business owning a pet at all, never mind an extremely sensitive high needs breed. If basset hound owners do right by their basset when they are pups they will grow into extremely loyal confident comical loving family members. Yes they are as much work as an infant when they ARE INFANTS! But oh they pay you back in spades with their extreme devotion. They aren’t for everyone. Clearly. Thank you for taking such care with this sweet absolutely stunning basset hound. She will love you for life. If I were to give any advice I would say GOOD JOB ON THE EARS! Yes they need a lot of attention! Also, bassets can be prone to bloat so keep an eye on that. Those great barrel chests can lead to a lot of air gulping. Also, bc basset hounds are long bodied like dachshunds, you really have to watch her weight to protect her back. Mostly just love her the way you do. She will always be more needy. She will always be sensitive to moods and angry loud sounds. She still needs a lot of reassurance as she continues to heal from her early abuse and trauma. I’m so glad you found her. She’s a lucky little girl and she will love you fiercely for all her life! ❤️

I used to have a Bassett Hound - named him Biscuit. Sweetest dog ever! And yes that ear maintenance is a must. Always getting in some kind of trouble 😵‍💫 like the time he followed some bees to their underground nest; needless to say he required a Vet visit with his poor little nose swelling to three times it's normal size. Another time he got his dog collar stuck in a crack in his dog house - his intense howling made me go downstairs in the middle of a thunderstorm to set him free. He spent the rest of the night under the kitchen table. My favorite memory was though hearing my daughter, for at the time talking loudly in the bathroom. Upon looking in I found her struggling to lift his short little legs over the side of the tub; Mom, Biscuit needs a bath & I can't get him to jump over. Needless to say I picked him up & over, where she soaped him in bubble bath. They both were content. A good reminder from you, for any pet you definitely need to read up on the breed. A Bassett is an incredibly sweet, loving & inquisitive little dog with long ears & sad eyes. They are not for everyone.

Tore my heart out, she was a healthy 65 lb. girl, full of spunk. She was my baby, scared of storms. Wanted me to cover her head during storms so she couldn’t see the lightening, that first storm without her was so hard. It’s hard enough to lose them to sickness but when it shouldn’t of happened it makes it harder. I love watching your pack, they get along so well. My Alli was queen of the house. ❤

So I guess it depends on the dog really. Enjoy, our bassets past and present have brought so much joy, fun and company to our home.

We rescued a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen from a centre when she was 14. She had skin problems, grubby ears, deaf and nearly blind. It was hard work but she was so much fun too. She was an old lady in her retirement years, we spoiled her and she gave so much love back. We had her for only 8 months until she passed but will never forget her.

I have 3 basset hounds. They are angels and the big floppy ears gives it away, they are angel wings. Embrace the noise. Basset hounds are truly empathic creatures.

My dog lives a great life and he is very loved, but if this guy wanted him for whatever reason, I'd give my dog up, because with this dude he'd be living his BEST life. That's how awesome this guy is.

I've had Bassets for 50 years and am associated with Basset Rescue of Southern California. My current three Basset girls are 3 years old, 14 years old and will be 15 years old the end of this month. They are very different from other dog breeds, and incredibly loving and adorable as you are discovering with Poppy. Even my husband, who always had large breed dogs , fell in love with them when he met me and he now treats them as doggie daughters. I admire the time and work you put into all these dogs, there are so many that are unloved, it breaks my heart. Thank you on behalf of all those precious souls just waiting to be loved and wanted.

She has certainly blossomed under your (and the pack's) care. Way to go guys. All I know for sure about Bassets is that as they get older they get very stubborn. I believe this comes from their intelligence. As in, "You better have a good reason for disturbing me or telling me to do something,"

Poppy has forgotten her previous agony and she is so beautiful with such a old sole look in her soft eyes. Another one that I love is Maeve she runs and plays and look so happy. I wish I could come over and give each one a kiss and a hug. Thank you Lee for all your care and love to the WHOLE pack.

Oh my gosh, Lee, I keep flashing back on when you rescued her....what a different puppy she was! She was swaddled in a towel or blanket in your arms and she just looked so sad and forlorn. But you and your magic touch and love brought her sweet personality out and she doesnt have any trace of fear on her sweet face. Its so fun to see her interacting with the other dogs and cats. She is home.
