These graphics look amazing for 1982!!!!

Arcade cabinets were significantly better than video game consoles and even computers for the time. Part of the reason is that the CRT was mounted vertically, turned 90 degrees, so the screen wasn't as wide, but was much taller. When the games were converted to consoles or computers, the vertical resolution was reduced but the horizontal resolution was increased. Every game looked better in the arcade at the time.
My dad owned a liquor store and leased out a restaurant which was attached to it. His office was on the other side of the wall from where they usually kept whatever video game they had. Every week, when we ate there, I'd play whatever-it-was and get fairly good at it. At one point, Popeye was one of them, it was fairly popular among customers, and my dad said he nearly lost his mind at hearing "I'm Popeye The Sailor Man" play over and over and over through the wall of his office!

Some insulation in the wall would have fixed that. HE owned the place.
Awesome. The good old days as in the best days.
I played the original arcade version of this game some months last year. Those graphics look amazing for its time!

Argh, 2 people have said this that I've noticed. Not really - this was 1982. Zaxxon came out in 1982, Star Trek, and I think TRON is on par. Gyruss came out a year later.
How many memories... My loved 80s
This game has such a large place in my heart. It was one of the earlier arcade titles I played, and when I got a Colecovision for Christmas in 1985, it was one of the games waiting for me that day, along with Donkey Kong and Mouse Trap, making this one of the first video games I ever owned. I later got the NES port the day after Christmas in 1993 at a local video rental store.
The good old days.

Old Times.. Great Times..!!
Remember begging my dad for a dollar so i could get four quarters to play this when we went to our local diner back in the day. I loved this dam thing to death even though i couldn't even beat the first stage.
Mame rules. I have a mame disc for my modded xbox. Pretty much every old school game out there, pixel perfect. It's priceless
One of my favorites! Thanks, this game has so much!
Clever little game for 82
I remember this game being in the laundry mat when I was a kid. We'd always go at night but my Mom never had enough quarters for us to play, so we'd just watch the demo and pretend like we were playing it. Man, I hated the laundry mat.

Ahh yes the 80's. The age when childs play came out and video games and music were a big thing. I personally think mario and popeye are good
Who else can remember that unique smell when you would walk into aladins castle or any arcade room from the 80s and the sound of all the games at one time? I think the video games more than the pizza is why I loved chuck e cheese so much when I was little
An unsung classic this was.

Yes this was a very good and fun arcade game. Along with galaga, defender, joust,ms.pacman, star castle, star wars the arcade game and disk of tron one of the best from the early 80s that still had high replay value.
The graphics were awesome for the time on the arcade, way ahead of its time.
My hometown used to have a Skaggs (soon to be an Osco Drug) and they had this game, as well as Donkey Kong 3, over by the entrance/exits, and I remember trying to play this game as a child. As I recall, I wasn't very good at it.
I dont usually like popular character themed games like this because the show is usually primary over the game play. This was an exception. This was an awesome game.
I had this one for NES,it was one of my favourites
Minamoto still used Popeye for Donkey Kong in a way. He used ideas from a Popeye episode called A Dream Walking in which Olive sleepwalks through a building site and across scaffolding etc.
Omg, thank you so much for posting this! My parents owned a store where we had this game in the back arcade area and I played it so much when I was a kid. Watching this brought back some may memories. The three game scenes and the music all came back to me. Thanks!
This is the first arcade machine I ever remember seeing in my life, as a toddler I lived in an apartment building next to a warehouse and I remember one of the floors had an unplugged Popeye machine in the middle of the room.....I never got to see it plugged in or on, I used to always wonder and imagine what the game was actually like.....it was about 10 years later I finally got the chance to play a Popeye cabinet for the first time at a RV campground somewhere traveling across the USA from New Hampshire to Wyoming
今見ても絵のデザインが素晴らしい。芸術の域に達している。
LOVED this game... played it endlessly, thanks!!!
aahhhhh a time when you could turn on the radio and there would always be a good song, or turn on the TV and there was always a great show, or go to the Arcade way before anyone knew what a Nintendo even was.............80s forever.............

Andreas Pittas I've never been a fan of any Mario games. I liked Donkey Kong, but that's about it. I'm not a fan of side scrolling platformers.
This was a great game. Played it in the arcade and also on a port to the Colecovision.
i remember the day our local arcade got this
Funny how these games are more addictive than the current ones..

i’ve got this on mame wii. good game back in the day👍
my childhood :D
waww good to see this game again :) memories
Great memories and actually a fun game.
I'm Popeye The Sailor Man! POPEYE! The Arcade Hit From Nintendo!
Fact: Jack Mercer died in 1984. Hope he saw Popeye Video Arcade Game before his passing.
ポパイはファミコンで4番目くらいに発売されたソフトだったかな。当時、めちゃくちゃ遊んだ。 多分まだ、ポパイのカートリッジは家のどこかにある。発売(開発)からもう40年も経つんですね!
Thats pretty good for the time, I like the music too!
God! I remember my friend and I playing this for hours. This and Star patrol (I think it was called that) you'd warp to different places and shoot alien ships (had a rear view display and you could turn your shield on and off.)

@@mediavideos2176 Me too! :) But sadly that doesn't work for MMOs, or games that don't have physical versions, or games that disable content or patches or mods or bootup or installation unless you log into somewhere that verifies your software key, or games without Complete Versions so you still gotta download DLC.
I only knew this game form the old atari 2600 console. Never seen its mame version before.
Since 1985 germany put a ban on setting up arcades in public places accessible to minors. Well with one exception, if your arcade was set up at the same place before 1985 you could keep it around. A local pub had popeye since then always in the same place for 35 years... they never moved even a little so they retained the right to keep it in a public place. The pub owners grandson is now running the pub and has been repairing this cabinet for all these years. When in 2002 the law was relaxed he finally moved the cabinet for cleaning the floor and found like €100 in lost coins below the cabinet. The original owner was a pretty relaxed guy and gave always free games when parents with kids where around. And they never raised pricing, it was 0,50DM in 1985 and even today it is only 0,50 Euro.
All this time I had no idea you could punch the bottles. This is gonna make the game a lot easier.
my favorite game on the C64 --please for Nintendo Switch
Well blow me down! If we think about it, hadn't KFS rejected Nintendo's original idea for a Popeye arcade game in late 1980, perhaps Shigeru Miyamoto wouldn't have created Donkey Kong and therefore Mario wouldn't exist!!!

This is pretty advanced for 1982.
Woah..never finished this game...I was a lazy gamer in this..I totally owned robotron but loved so much watching people on this one.
you can find these types of classic arcade games at a Nickelcade arcades near ya
Such a quality game
Good job!
It was a difficult game for me back then.

After the ship level the rounds start over but this time Sea Hag is in the top right hand corner and she is throwing skulls at you.The skulls will randomly bounce around and drop from level to level.she throws like 3 at a time.U can punch them but that gives Bluto a chance to catch up to u.Sea Hag will also appear from both sides and throw bottles as well plus you have to still catch the hearts!
2 Ways to Die hearts in the water get rekt from Bluto
First place I saw this game was at the skating rink.
aww man the 80s
Look up "BARCADIA" You might have one in your area. They're bars, with classic arcades. All for 24 cents. MAN I love the music in this video. Watching as I type. Such a good flashback. This isn't the NES or ATARI version, this looks like the actual acade upload. I wonder where they got that.
I remember playing this on a bootleg console
I remember it too only in 1984 I would have been 8 years old LOL
Difficult game as hell even at arcade machines level.
I kicked ass in this game!!!!
I have this for NES and I play it on MAME! It's one of my favorite arcade games! These are my kind of games! No stupid, no good modern crap! The 80's was the best time for video games! Everything now is boring! The 80's had different kinds of games! DIFFERENT KINDS!

I agree with you on the 80s games! today's arcade games is too modern like you said!! plus too much $$ to play them! in the old days it was ONLY a quarter (25 cents) to play these GREAT games we grew up with!! such as: spy hunter (my favorite of all time!) I'm an expert at it.. :) PAC man , ms. pac. man, Jr PAC man, rampage, front line, pole position, kangaroo, burger time.... plus lots of others I missed... I miss the good old days! had a blast!

All Access Gaming you are right they are the best video games to play today!! Still the best After all these years! Today's games I don't know whats what on the title names of the new arcade machines, :/ I haven't been to the arcades in years! How much does it cost to play Today's games?? 2 bucks!? What am I saying? Could be more, right guys?? Forgot one arcade game that was fun to play.. Remember: PLAY CHOICE 10?! my favorite is balloon fight! Because of popping the guys balloon he flys down into the water & gets eaten By the big fish! Lol... I didn't have it for my NES at that time, but I scooped up pennies & quarters I saved to try to see if I had 15 bucks to buy the cart. Bought the game the same day i played the arcade.. :) Taluigi: I do the same today to see if I can get a high score on the old classic games couldn't do back in the 80s.. Today as were older we can do it easy! I wonder why that is?! :D when we were kids, we couldn't get a score of 100,000 on the arcade games or the ATARI 2600.. :) seemed impossible to do.. Hehe.. Talk to u guys later!
This was a pretty awsome game althought I never could win cause always got killed by either Pluto or the Sea Hags projectiles that she was always throwing at me.
잘보고가요 뽀빠이 잼있었었는데 요새 이런 게임들 세이브된거 많이 팔았음 좋겠네요 화이팅

This was based on the 1960s Popeye cartoon.
awesome shit this was my childhood!
To think Donkey Kong would have been Popeye at the time sounds so weird to think about.
This is like the only licensed game Nintendo has ever made. I can't think of another. And I mean first party game, that's why Goldeneye doesn't count, because it was made by Rare.
THe text on the "king features syndicate" logo is almost preturnatrually high res.
I am ten and my parents have an Atari and I was playing frogger and I was so mad when I made it to level ten and died I ragged so hard I went upstairs to take a break and know we have come so far in video games!!
@budderbendy I'm pretty sure you're talking about a game called Space Panic.. God, I'm hoping for Popeye and Mr. Do to come out on PSN!
I remember playing this game on a bootleg console at a shopping mall, and wanted to sing, "Popeye the sailor man, he lives in a frying pan, just turn up the gas and he'll burn his ass, that's Popeye the sailor MAAAAN!"
I had the commodore 64 version and it had an interesting bug - if you sent Bluto flying with spinach, then quickly got to the punching bag and dropped the barrel on him in mid-air, it would trap him there for the rest of the level. Didn't work on the arcade version...
Music from stage 2 reminds of H.Bellafonte's ''Matilda'' I still can't pass the ship stage...

SID-Sound on C-64 was a bit better - I liked that game !!!
Who’s playing this, the bloody Lawn Mower Man? I don’t think I ever got past level 1. (I know I didn’t) 🥺
WAIT A MINUTE!!! There's only three rounds in this game?! I thought level 2 was coming after the third round.
After sitting through a boring church sermon full of senior citizens, my siblings and i would "play" popeye by running around the pews. Much to the chagrin of the owners / clergy .
