35 YEARS….its taken 35 years for me to see the TRUE version of this game. Thank you uploader! Beautiful sprites.
by 1982 standards these graphics are just amazing. Some of the best around.

Arcades had these kinds of graphics then, which was part of the allure of going even with home consoles available. The Atari 5200 kind of started to get close, but it still wasn't as good as the arcade. I don't think even the NES was as good, but the quality of the games was just groundbreaking.
I was 12 when this came out and I was a MASTER at it. Don't know why; it just seemed so easy to me. People used to watch me play each level over and over until I got bored and let them take over. I wasn't very good at a lot of other arcade games, though, for some reason. This one and I just seemed to gel together really well. I still play it on MAME to this day (I'm 53 now).

@@ThunderFist1978 even the B mode on NES was way easier. Blutus didn't try to catch you when you are or above or below him. And the guys that appears throwing bottles on the sides, they didn't appeared.
Funny how Miyamoto wanted to make a Popeye game a year prior to this one but he couldn't get the license, so he created original characters (The game is Donkey Kong). Then a year later he received the license and made this game.
I always really liked how they did the Popeye theme and other music for this game, I still catch myself humming it from time to time to this very day.

You're a maniac!
I played this on Commodore 64 when I was 6 years old. I still remember punching the spinach, running into Bluto and quickly punching the tires. When timed just right, they would land on Bluto and he would be stuck still in the air, headless for the rest of the game. This is how I beat the game. Lol 😄 I discovered that glitch for myself. 😉
So without Popeye we wouldn’t have Mario.

And who knows? Maybe without Popeye, we wouldn’t have video games today in North America. When the great video game crash hit in the early 80s, Nintendo were the ones who brought it to a halt with the release of the NES, and without Donkey Kong, which is the game that really put Nintendo on the map here, would they have had the presence to be able to release the NES widely like they did? Or would they have had the clout to convince toy store owners to take a chance on their console? Or could Nintendo have even been a casualty of the crash themselves if they hadn’t released Donkey Kong? None of their games were very successful here in the U.S. until Donkey Kong came around.

holy cow.. when i was little, my dad (in the 80s) got 1 or 2 arcade games and set them up in our house on free play. he would keep a game for a while and then trade it out for a different one. he was friends i guess with a guy who ran an arcade cabinet business. it was pretty amazing as a kid because whenever i brought over friends it would blow their minds that i had full-size arcade games at my house. this just wasn't a thing in the 80s because back then most parents either didn't care about video games or thought they'd "rot your brain." but luckily my dad was a big kid and always loved them. anyway, we had games like defender, time pilot, ms pacman etc. and until recently I forgot we had this game for a short while.. i remember how infuriating it could be with the damn bottles and hearts. that sound of grabbing a heart just brought back the most intense feeling of nostalgia, since as a kid it was life-or-death getting them all lol. thanks for this video!
Man, it looks so much better than NES version, spritework and animations are superb. I wonder how it felt to play a cartoon back in 1982

One of my favorites growing up! Glad I got to play this in the arcade at the local bowling alley. It’s so great that you can see the Nintendo in this.

After millions Of years FINALLY VIC-20 A CREATED POPEYE!
the real challenge is level 10, power up only has half duration, objects has more erratic moves and the enemies are more smart
This was a pretty good game for its day and it came out not too long after the live-action movie starring Robin Williams and Shelly Duvall.
I had this on Atari 2600. I used to laugh at the way he’d stomp when he punched, then I’d see the 80s wrestlers do the same thing.

still much more fun than many new games....

Unlikely, due to licensing issues... Goldeneye was a miracle, because people were begging for that game to be rereleased for decades... Sadly, the arcade/NES Popeye doesn't have as much of a fanbase, so unlikely it'll ever get a rerelease. Shame, because it's a nice part of Nintendo history too, and I loved it as a kid.
You play phenomenal! Thanks this was beautiful and fun, love you Popeye!!

what a great game.

To think this is what inspired Nintendo to make Mario - in DK
Oh good
Huh? So Nintendo got to work on a Popeye game after all. Of course by then, Donkey Kong was out and Mario, the Popeye stand-in, soared into greater heights.
Yes,Castlevania "stole" those ideas of climbing ladders diagonally, collect hearts, grab power items and those moving platforms.

The one thing I dislike is that the ladder in the arcade version, you can only climb down it. Where as the NES version you can climb up & down it all you want.

I remember running across an arcade machine of this by a warehouse a LONG time ago. I watched it for a while and thought it was a Donkey Kong ripoff. Then, I kept watching and realized, yes, it was uncannily similar to Donkey Kong, but it also had WAY too much work put into it to be a ripoff. In fact, I thought, it made Donkey Kong look like the rip off. Little did I know, I wasn't too far off.
First saw this at the skating rink.
I remember in the early 1990's i play it on my old nintendo famicom i remember there was a gun with this set
God i still remember the days of playing at the arcade getting quarters and being with friends and beating the high score nothing like it

Due to licensing, Nintendo has not released this game through Hamsters arcade archives. Probably due to King Features, who own Popeye, wanting too much money.
