I shit you not man... i went to three mechanics and only ONE of them confirmed my diagnosis.. It doesnt happen often but heres the backstory for context why i said this, i used to work for a warehouse sorting packages during night time, when i clocked out i was feeling tired, so i drove home.. in the back of my mind i was feeling that my body wanted to clock out next so i got off the freeway and onto a back road or an empty road that isnt the freeway. Good thing i did because i passed out at the wheel doing about 25mph and i hit the curb and bent the axle. There was some damage and i knew it had to be fixed... but i didnt have the time or money back then to fix it. In total i spent about 2000 bucks... 1400 from the mecha in cali (if youre reading this, fuck you.) and 600 from the mechanic in texas (fuck you too) but the second mechanic i went to in texas confirmed that my axle needed to be replaced and after i told them the hell i went through, they were pissed at the mechanic i went to just prior to them. Im not trying to bash mechanics and give them all a bad rep but when you do this to customers who need hinest people they can trust to work on their cars, you need to know what youre looking for and where to look for it in order to solve the problem. My rant aside i wanna give you props and two big thunbs up for helping a customer whod been in my shoes. 👍👍

The 3.5 in my Taurus has a similarly stupid internal water pump design. Dumbest thing ever invented. There's a high chance of catastrophic engine damage being done before someone even realizes there's a problem because the weep holes are hidden in places that are hard as hell to see. And that's only if it fails in the "proper" way. It can just fail internally and dump coolant straight into the oil pan and you won't know anything about it until your bearings are roasted.

Nope, that visual check was all that was needed to confirm the bad parts. No robots or camera/scope needed, just good attention and eyes. The best two tools in any good mechanics box. He could've went on to do a pressure test or smoke test to confirm further, however those tools aren't usually part of a mobile mechanics set. And if they are, expect to pay shop rate or higher for a shop level service performed roadside. Value for value.

You shouldn't bag out the other mechanic. You were in two minds yourself you basically said it wasn't the water pump because it's got an internal water pump and how does that make a difference. And you rebooted yourself plenty. And don't take everything for your customer says as gospel. That mechanic could have said anything to her it's just double Dutch to her.

The sad thing is that technician A got himself safe from a possible lawsuit in case the water pump failed soon after the simple gasket repair. Technician B on the other hand trying to help a customer save money also put himself possibly liable in case the water pump decides to give up working and might end up doing a +10 hours repair job free of charge for the customer. That's why most technicians X condemns this kind of troubleshooting from the start. Not hating, just creating awereness of things that can ruin a good technician's career.
