Polytunnel Renovation [Part 2] - Laying Woodchip Paths... The Preparation!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This week I'm back working on the polytunnel renovation, but today I'm working outside... getting the preparation work done for laying woodchip paths all around it to make it more practical (and attractive!).
Check out my Niall Gardens kit page! www.kit.co/niallgardens for today's tools, my favourite gardening gear, my everyday carry, and even my filming gear!

My husband and I love your videos. We discovered your channel a few weeks ago and binge watched through all your videos so delighted to find a new one today. 😀 We bought our house here in Donegal last March, renovated indoors and are ready to start in the garden 🥳 We don't have a polytunnel but I still enjoyed this video. We need to plant a good privacy hedge , I want some nice yet low maintenance flower beds and lots of pretty trees so we will have colour in the garden throughout changing seasons. We have a stream running by the end of our garden so would love to make that area prettier too - it's all overgrown right now. So lots of work ahead of us. Your videos are great for giving us ideas and so realistic with the Irish climate. 💓

That is such a cool and kind message - I’m chuffed to bits! Thank you! Sounds like you’ve got a great garden to make your own. The funny thing is that your garden sounds a little like here... we have a little stream at the back of the garden that’s overgrown so I haven’t shown it yet! Can I ask very roughly where in Donegal you are? No problem if you’d rather not say. It’s just that every summer as a child we’d spend one or two weeks up there so it’s got a special place in my heart. We’d have stayed up near Carrigart so I know all around that area 😀

we are a good bit away from Carrigart in St.Johnston. O I'd love if you make a video on your plans for the stream! I hope we could potentially have a garden as nice as yours but for now it's very bare , just a large plot of grass and some bushes and trees around the boundary, very boring.

Hi Niall, so happy I found your channel. Love it. We're getting ready to put up our first greenhouse 16' x 24' low side wall tunnel with roll up sides. Just picked it up yesterday from Grower Solutions in Cookeville, TN. I live in Greeneville TN it was about a 3 hour drive one way. Having your tips on the Landscape Fabric is going to help me so much. Thank you for your efforts in creating helpful videos!

Great tip with the trimmer up against the plastic poly tunnel. You are really thinking so that you don't have to work twice, three times. I like that roll of black fabric. I will have to check that out -- and I don't like fabric but that looks pretty good. You did double with that fabric -- no weeds coming through there. You are right it looks so good already. All that hard works is going to pay off for years to come. Great job.

Thanks so much Renee! Yeah hopefully the landscape fabric will do the job, at least for a few years! I've got the woodchip down now and it looks great - that'll be in the next video... it makes such an improvement to the whole area.

Love the tip for strimming close to the tunnel, I always end up leaving an edge which I then pull the grass by hand, time consuming and not great for my poor old back! I will now be using your board tip 😊👍x

Hello Niall it’s so nice watching the progress of your gardening and I’m not sure if you have told us before but just how much land do you have there. And do you perhaps have an aerial view of the property it would be lovely to see it from the big picture. Hope the weather stays good for you being outside 🥶❄️ 🌧. As always stay safe and stay gardening ✌️🇨🇦🌶🥬🧑‍🌾💐🥕

Hi Ali! 👋 The garden is just under one acre, though it's longer than it is wide. Oh, I'll have to get onto that! Maybe when I do another garden tour, I'll include a map so that you can see where each bit of the garden is? It's looking like it's going to be a wet week - yuck! Hope all's well with you!

Hey man great videos, just want to recommend if the fabric is woven to sear the edges you cut. Otherwise it frays quite quickly and you end up with weeds pushing through and tons of black strings of plastic flying around the garden. Keep up the good work 😁

You’re right there Paul. We tend to cut it a few inches larger and tuck a piece under when using that type it’s one downside of that product.

Really looking forward to seeing it all finished with the wood chip down. Daft question, I've never made my own chips but wondering if you were able to use the diseased trees for this given they were just for paths or if you had to burn those?

  • @niallgardens

    @niallgardens

Dont worry, no such thing as a daft question 😉 In Ireland, it’s illegal to burn garden waste or have a bonfire in your garden which makes disposing of material really tricky (or expensive). I had the reassurance of the environment agency’s disease tests, but to be safe I’ve split the material I cut down... anything that I suspected wasn’t 100% has been disposed of (a portion of the pear tree), and I’m only using the remainder (inc the Apple tree) which I believe is unaffected, for the woodchip paths 👍

Great job Niall. Ill be doing the same in my veg garden when i start doing it. I bought 2x 100m rolls of landscape fabric. To cover my plot. In a similar fashion. Due to arsenic in soil. Debating on doing on top of soil under raised beds to keep separated. Whats your thoughts ? I envy your flat land mine on quite a slope so may have a digger in to terrace land

  • @niallgardens

Hope you’re recovering well 🤗 Yeah we’re very lucky to have such a flat site - I’d say the land only slopes about 10-15ft over the acre. I have to be honest and say I’ve never dealt with the situation you’re describing. I tend to think that a barrier like you describe is a good course of action, but I think it might be worth double-checking on the net whether it’ll be sufficient and whether there’s anything else that might help.

Hi niall , great video as always. Is your wood chipper good ? I'm in the market for one , would you recommend i get your one ? I made a woodchip path 5 years ago , but the fabric was poor quality and so needs redoing.

  • @niallgardens

Yes, absolutely! I love it - it's noisy, but chips the wood incredibly finely which I like. It's been replaced by a newer (and quieter I think!) model, but I've linked that model in my kit page. In the video description, there's a link to my kit page, and a section on power tools. The latest incarnation of my shredder is there. I haven't used it because my one is still perfect, but I can't recommend Ryobi tools highly enough 👍

  • @niallgardens

No problem! I pretty much live in gardening gloves! Rather than expensive 'gardening specific' ones, I use ones for trades work, but they're thin enough to still have some 'feel' and they're really comfy. I have a link in the description to my kit page... If you go there, there's a section I've called Everyday Carry and you'll see exactly the gloves I wear 👍 Just make sure to pick the right size because it'll take you to the size I wear! (which is about a small/medium).
