Absolutely brilliant! I love back to Eden, has meant I can leave in the summer for ling periods without worrying about watering - and the lack of weeding! I will be doing similar when I get my poly tunnel. I love that you are trying to live with nature as well - compassionate and knowledgeable (:

Gawain, thanks again for your lovley words, yeah its such a world of difference to bare soil, it was getting to 40c in summer last year in there and could get away with spot watering plants once or twice a week! Best of luck with your tunnel too when you get it!!!

The woodchip mulch will be refreshed/topped up as its needed to keep feeding the soil and keep the weeds down, but that should be a lot less work than the initial construction!!! Ha! Join us in 30mins (4pm UK time) if you can and come check out our young food forest too 💚✌️🌿

Hi we ordered them on line a few years ago, they are commercial green waste bags, we had to order a min of 100 I recall, I think they are 150Litre bags. I have seen them being sold seperately once in a small local harware store for about £5 each.

Hi there! I don't have any access to that much compost, but I have some really fine fertile garden soil. Can I make the beds out of soil instead of the compost? What do I add in the soil to keep it fertile after every season? How do I incorporate organic matter into the soil? Won't the soil compact after the first year, how will I loosen it up? If I add hay to mulch the plants after I plant them wont the seeds from the hay invade the greenhouse and will result in tons of weeding? Lastly, I have some chopped up corn stalks but they are kind of rotten and smell weird, is it a bad idea to add them in the walkways? (I'm afraid that afids and other diseases are binding in them). Thankyou very much! I'm a beginner and very curious about the no dig technology!

Hi Petru, you could initial use mostly soil to make your beds, but ideally each year you need to add a fresh layer of compost around 1-3cm on top to feed your soil and the micro organisms. Compost doesnt compact like normal soil, that is one of the reasons why it is best. You could start you beds with your soil this year and turn your hay and chopped yo corn stalks into compost to top up and feed your beds after your first growing season... the worms will take the matter from the tops down into your soil, so there is no need to dig/loosen... they do it for you! ... if you get the composting hay hot enough, that will kill off the seeds too and you can add any other plant material you have to your composting pile too ... but you do need to give it as long as possible to break down ... there are ways you can compost faster that may be worth looking into if necessary. @@freedomforestlife Thank you very much for the helpful reply! I have created my beds with fresh soil and after I will plant I will mulch the plants with chopped corn stalks. After the growing season I will add well fermented compost and then repeat the process (compost, plant, mulch). Does the mulch around the plants need to be composted or can it be fresh, dried chopped corn stalks? I have drip irrigation under the mulch, hopefully it will break down until the end of the season due to constant humidity. Lastly, the corn stalks I place in the walk ways (you have wood chips) does it need to be kept constantly moist or left dry? How often do we re mulch our walk ways?

How much (/long) did you water it (for)?

Hey, just been planting it today and had to water abit more than you would usually water a plant in because it was so dry and the water wanted to just run off at first, but when i came round again half hour later the water was soaking in nicely!
