I was hoping for alternatives intead of talk talk talk. Some folks use Ruschia Nana but it dies if temperature goes under minus 6c.

Great video Niall! :) Guilds of well chosen species add a lot of function and beauty at the same time. We use mint and daffodils here to deter nibbling by the many voles we have here.

Thanks very much for the lovely comment - I really appreciate it. I’d been reading about the use of daffodils actually, so great to hear that you have success with it.

@@niallgardens They used to be planted a lot in orchards here in SW England - many still have them, though they're usually spread out these days rather than just around the trees. Of course they look nice too! :)

Never landscape fabric. Nope. 3 in compacted limestone base (plate compactor can be rented or buy a cheap one from Harbor Freight for those in the US) and then top your gravel of choice. And then the religious use of Preen or another pre emergent. I hate hate hate landscape fabric.

Honestly, at first, I was very anxious for you. But then I thought, what an exciting opportunity! If you take your time and dont get frustrated, it can be a fun and rewarding project! And you luckily still have the guild garden, I read below, which is good because you just bought those trees. You've got this!

Thank you so much. That has been really useful, I'm away to dispose of my blight leaves and hopefully harvest some potatoes!🤞 I don't feel half as panicked as I was a moment ago when I decided that Blight was what was wrong with my potato leaves!! 🙏 Such a helpful video. ☺

I just came indoors from my very wet Welsh garden (Summer 2024 has been a wash out). The weeds love this weather, I’ve done a load of weeding but I’m thinking I need to properly suppress them this winter. The correx tip is great - I’ll be doing that this winter!!

  • @niallgardens

I have planted two peach trees, two plum trees, two pear trees. Next step is watching your videos on creating a fruit tree guild. I appreciate the fact that you give the names of the six types of plants needed for a successful guild. Also, within the types of plants needed examples of the specific plants. I don't think I will do the raised variety but till up the sod in my yard. I have really rich black dirt so feel comfortable I will be ok doing it this way. Will get it tilled this summer/fall so it will be ready for early Spring. Thank you so much for all this information. Good luck with your guild and can't wait to see the growth of your guilds.

Hi! Can you plant the runners direct in a bed, or do you recommend planting them in small pots first?

  • @niallgardens

You can indeed - either straight onto the ground or into a pot will work equally well

Thanks for the advice Niall's. Gardening is just starting to pay off here in New England. Potatoes, Onions, Bush Beans, Tomatoes, Corn and Squash, Zucchini and Eggplant. Don't let me forget the Peppers, watermelon and Sunflowers. Just planted some cucumber's as the first batch were struggling. These popped up in less then 5 days which is exciting. Put in a succession crop of Zucchini today. Only 95 days left in my growing season.
