FYI ego death is something you experience (if lucky enough) during a very powerful psychedelic trip. The lyrics would be out of this world! if such lyrics existed.

Polyphia is so inspirational to me. They undeniably push the technical difficulty super high, without forgetting that taste is king. Their songs are all so delicious in their own unique way. Every style/genre they attempt is executed with respect to the past while still making it their own. Fantastic players; historic writers.

The best thing about polyphia is how down to earth they seem. Musicians at that level have a tendency to get really egotistical. Tim is active on twitch all the time talking with fans, detailing how he writes and records, talking with people he’s collaborated with. The whole band seems so chill. Check out some of their behind the scenes stuff in your own time (it doesn’t make good reaction content) they have such a unique mark on music right now. Both from a musicianship level and a personality level.

We are around the same age apparently, @Just Jen Reacts. I was obsessed with Vai by the time I was 12. This band is already established, there have been several artist Steve literally plucked from KZread and tried to help them get their music careers going. One of these was a young German guitarist who was on youtube playing Vai covers at the age of 12. Someone showed Steve here vids and by age 14 she was invited on stage to play one of his songs with him... she was 14. She just turned 30 Her name Is Yasi Hofer, look her up on here. Anther young talent Vai is helping get known is a 10 yr old bass guitarist named Ellen. She got to play live on stage With Steve a cple weeks ago. Her Bass is bigger than she is.

I knew your reaction to this would be epic! The style of the band is very crisp and tight and Steve Vai beautifully accompanied it with his own unique style. He could have turned it into a shredfest but he deliberately didn't. Steve doesn't have to prove himself anymore. He doesn't try to compete with the young folks of Polyphia. That makes this song all the more memorable. The band is definitely worth following and Playing God is definitely worth a response video. I look forward to it. (Edit) If you haven't responded to Steve Vai in a while, I strongly recommend Teeth of the Hydra.

They started very young and have many albums out already. They started as heavy djent and metal core but then morphed into their own sound by incorporating hip hop and rap elements to their music.

For what it's worth.. Every musician sounds very bad, for a very long time, before they start sounding any good. A bad sounding musician is just someone earlier in their journey. But sounding good often only means "practiced more". And you'd be surprised to hear how many hours even talented musicians spend "sounding bad", while they compose or create a piece, because they too have to "learn" to play what they compose and while you learn, you will always sound bad. Practice makes perfect just means that you get better through repetition. And as a musician I can say that nobody is ever "done or finished" with learning about music theory. It's a never ending journey.. just ask Steve Vai ;)

Glad you liked the track. Just want to clarify something about the idea of "ego death." The term actually refers to the complete loss of one's subjective self-identity. The experience of ego death can be many things including transcendental or extremely scary. Some people achieve ego death through LSD, others through meditation. The idea is to be truly one with the universe and no longer identify with one's sense of "self."

Ego death is anything but negative. Many scholars and ancient teachers said that you must kill the ego of this life to transcend or ascend to a higher being or Christ-consciousness. It's like Maynard sings in Tool, he must "crucify the ego." I think it's them laying it all down and being humble with Steve Vai on the song, which I'm sure he was a big inspiration for Tim and Scottie, the guitarists.

If it's anything like the rabbit hole I went down two years ago, it's gonna be a deep one... a VERY deep one. I'm also a guitar player of 15 years too so there is that to consider. Two years ago, they inspired me to take my own playing and ability to the next (and highest possible) level. But as an empath and and emotional conduit, regardless of my instrument knowledge, this band has changed my very foundation. Up until this song came out, Bittersweet from their Renaissance album was my favorite. I'd have to go back in time and make a reaction video to explain what their music does to me.

Hey Jen I just wanted to say I love reactions. I know you haven’t reacted to any falling in reverse for bit, but I wanted to recommend some older ones like alone, brother, gangsta’s paradise, just like you, chemical prisoner, bad girls club, asshole, carry on, fair weather fans. P.s. Sorry if that was a lot to read.
