Polymer Clay Veneer with Embossing Powder and Texture with Debbie Crothers

Hi all, let's incorporate embossing powders with polymer clay to create a luscious polymer clay veneer/slab. Embossing powders work beautifully for this process. I've used my favourite Christi Friesen texture stamp. Don't forget to check out my website at www.debbiecrothers.com/ and sign up for my newsletter while you're there.

    hey Barbara, you are more than welcome. There are loads of ways you can use embossing powder with polymer clay. My least fave is to "bloom" on the surface of cured clay as this scratches off really easily. Have loads of fun creating ♥♥

    Always love how generous you are with your experiments! Good to hear your voice too! Miss you! I probably have at least three or four embossing powder I've never used! So I was wondering, doesn't it become different when you bake it? I thought maybe it kinda melts and hardens? Would love to see that step if you do that. I just noticed someone gave you a thumbs down!!!?? Who *are* these people??? Thanks again for this. The type of cane you made is pretty much the only kind I can make! LOL So I'm glad of that!!

    Thank you, Debbie! I like your videos! One advice if you don't mind! ^_^ When you pressing the clay into your texture stamp, I would recommend you to use cosmetic (make up) sponge - it is so helpful and the clay is not sticking to the fingers and make your work much easier! ^_^ I like to use it for many things in my polymer clay processes ^_^ Good evening!

    Hi Debbie. Please forgive my beginners ignorance. When you get to the end of creating the veneer do you bake the clay as per normal ? I was lucky to have found a plastic container of 10 jars of embossing powder for $5 in an op shop a while back, but haven't used any yet.

  • @debbiecrothers1

    Hey Allison, great to hear from you...thanks for getting in touch. You can pretty much do anything you want to with this veneer now and then cure as per instructions for the clay you're using. Yes lucky you - that's an amazing find. There is lots you can do with embossing powder and polymer clay actually. Have fun. x

    Hi Debbie, that sparkle in the black is lovely and love that technique making the stripes, pretty colours. A question though if you don’t mind, why do you shave it then cover it? It’s just it’s not showing the shaved side as you cover it with the gold blend backing and texturally it’s not making any difference as you then press it on the mat again. I’m just not understanding that step. Thanks Debbie, I’m really enjoying your videos.

    Can you use a quick heat gun to the surface?

  • @debbiecrothers1

    @debbiecrothers1

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Bernice, you could if you wanted to I guess. Are you wanting to "melt" the powders? Don't forget too if you use a heat gun on raw clay you'll compromise the integrity of the clay and it could prove difficult to manipulate if you're wanting to use on a 3d object. It would be fine if your piece was flat. Perhaps it would be great to give it a try and see how it works for you. Thanks for your question Bernice.

    Hey Emma, you know I think we all have embossing powders tucked away in our draws which have never been used - mine are just seeing the light of day of recent times. I guess until you sit down and play you never really know what they can and can't do. I've found with this technique the powders stay gritty - they don't "bloom". The piece I show right at the beginning is a cured piece and it looks just like my uncured piece. Good luck with your powders. x

  • @debbiecrothers1

    Hey Jeffrey, I've found during my experimenting with polymer clay and embossing powders, the clay doesn't seem to like it when the powders are heated to the point of "bloom" (ie they all melt together). So I would cure this piece in the oven and then leave as is. Thanks for getting in touch Jeffrey.

    I realize this video was posted 4 years ago, but I have a question. What was the reason for the addition of the gold clay and cutting it off the striped layer to only make a gray mix for backing? You can't see the gold on either side when you cut & finish the pieces, so you might as well use a scrap clay blend for the back to begin with. I really like the 3D alligator skin texture/effect you made with the black embossing powder, but would love to know why that entire gold clay process?

    Hey Jan, you know I had to go and rewatch this because I couldn't for the life of me remember what I had done. You are totally right - the gold clay is quite useless isn't it haha. If I was doing this again I would simply back with additional clay to bulk up the original striped veneer prior to stamping. Funny how things change over time as we learn more. Thanks for picking this one up too Jan.
