Polycrates' Ring: The Tragedy of a Tyrant | A Tale from Ancient Greece

Polycrates, tyrant of Samos: a victim of success Polycrates (r. 540s - 522 BC) rules the Greek island of Samos, feared for his might as much as he is admired for his many achievements. Polycrates' name is synonymous with success...but too much worldly fortune risks the envy of the gods. The ancient legend of Polycrates' ring weaves a tale of the mysterious ways of fate, and the tragic fall of a man at the height of mortal glory.
A story from ancient Greece, based on Herodotus' Histories (3.39-43, 122-26), featuring: Polycrates, tyrant of Samos; Amasis/Ahmose II, pharaoh of Egypt; Oroetes, Persian satrap of Lydia

Thanks! The ancient stories of Polycrates are so interesting in how they turn him into a kind of moral fable.

it is amazing with all the ancient super powers going into Egypt and not noting of the pyramid construction. Seems like some culture would of documented how the huge stones were moved? 🧐 Thank you for the fantastic history video. 🥰

Hell yeah. Would you be interested in making a video about how Themistocles put together the navy for Athens?

Always happy to give more attention to Themistocles-the expansion of the navy was part of a video from last year (on the battle of Salamis), if you’re interested!
