00:00 Polo Shirt Introduction
A polo shirt is one of the most versatile shirts any man can own. Chances are, you already own an array of these shirts, and every Classic wardrobe will benefit from the presence of at least one polo to serve as a casual sport shirt that is especially well-suited for warmer weather.
01:04 History Of The Polo Shirt
As the name implies, the history of the polo shirt is closely linked to the history of the game of polo, although the modern polo shirt as we recognize it today looks very different from its ancient antecedent.
03:10 The Polo Shirt Today
From their origins on the polo fields, polo shirts have come to dominate menswear. Few other garments are seen on middle managers and suburban dads as often as they are glimpsed on celebrities and music stars.
03:57 Polo Shirt Hallmarks: Materials
04:38 Knits
05:10 Sleeves & Cuffs
06:12 Collars & Plackets
07:39 Buttons & Buttonholes
08:14 Other Details
When selecting a polo shirt, take advantage of the following list of quality hallmarks to make a selection that falls within your desired price point while also leveraging the full potential of this versatile and functional garment.
08:46 How to Style a Polo Shirt
Now that you know how to find the best polo shirt, we will share with you tips and tricks to achieve the best possible look in your polo.
11:42 How to Buy a Polo Shirt
When it comes to a summer wardrobe, it’s not a bad idea to have a selection of polo shirts. I usually recommend at least having a navy and a white polo shirt but it’s wise to include other colors as well. Follow these guides to get tips for finding and buying the perfect polo shirt.
12:08 Outfit Rundown
Kyle is wearing a tan polo shirt from Ralph Lauren, a famous purveyor of polo shirts. He has opted to wear it untucked, and selected a shirt with an appropriately short hem. To emphasize this more casual styling, Kyle's trousers are dark-washed jeans, which harmonize well with his dark brown, pebbled oxfords. The entire look is given a subtle pop of color thanks to his midnight blue and burgundy Fort Belvedere socks.

Good video with lots of info. Polo shirts are a must have for spring, summer and early autumn. Great choice to be had at most budgets. Wash gently at a low temperature!
As usual Kyle another informative video much appreciated thanks
I like how you're now showing fragrances in the outfit section of the video. It really helps with knowing what to get.
This segment is even better than the last one! ❤ I have an affinity for Fusalp Polo shirts on men. The fit is timeless and attractive 🥂
Hi! I'm quite interested in long-sleeved polos, especially the ones that have a classic fit, with prominent, pointier collars and interesting textures. However, I'm having a hard time finding any. I would greatly appreciate a seperate video about them! Excellent, quality content, by the way!

May I recommend Brooks Brothers? Their polos are quite lovely. The spearpoint collars, though, are a bit of a historical detail that you'll probably struggle to find. I wish you luck on the hunt!

I am also interested in seeing a long-sleeved polo shirts video. In my fall-winter rugged casual clothes, I have two long-sleeve polos and two long-sleeved henleys in winter colors (myrtle green, cobalt, box car red, and light rust). Adding some long-sleeved polos outside of the colder seasons would be welcomed that are not just longer-sleeve versions of my short-sleeves.

@@gentlemansgazette Hi, I have an important question about buttonholes. Can you provide any info on the exact process of making those you consider high-quality ones? I thought they only need high density, additional reinforcement, and sharp tools to cut through - but still sewn first and then cut.
I love the fact that in your team is a person of color. Keep it up!
I'm not usually one for casualwear, but I find that there are some times when a suit just won't do. I don't wear them often outside the house aside from swordfencing, but they're my main pick for barbecues, pool parties, and doctor's visits. I always wear them tucked in, with slacks (or dress shorts in the summer), and sometimes with cravats, depending on whether the event is social or athletic. When I go for private horseback rides or lessons and pickleball, they're also my shirt of choice - with riding breeches and boots, and a tennis sweater and white shorts respectively. I suppose that to me, they're a good choice when even a dress shirt is impractical.
I've only ever used Lacoste polos forever so, it was good to watch this
Polos are my jam! Since I was in elementary school, my mother insisted that I wear polos to school, and now, many years later, I love wearing them. I've even begun wearing them out to other places, since t-shirts won't really cut it for the occasion. I wear long-sleeved polos to school in the winter, and they are quite utilitarian for that purpose.
The Brooks Brothers slim fit Polo is my favorite shirt. Fits my body like a charm and I can just throw it on and go.
Exactly what i was looking for. I think Gentlemen's Gazette is a mind reading channel
Polos are my favorite warm weather shirt. I own about 20 in various colors. They are comfortable and look nice. Ralph Lauren polos are great. You want to avoid some cheaper brands that fade quickly and don't look good. I always wear them tucked in too.

Ralph Lauren Polos are worth their price. They maintain their color and material the longest.
I have worn tens of Ralph Lauren polo shirts over a decade, as well as Lacoste. Darker colors seem to fade quicker over numerous washes, but that seems to be a typical characteristic of cotton. RL is still my favourite, but in Europe they are getting crazy expensive, Lacoste too, with 110-120EU per shirt. Recently tried Brooks Brothers, at 45EU for a 100% cotton piquet shirt. Colors are somewhat limited to pastel colors. The fit is similar to RL and Lacoste custom slim fits when going one size smaller. Only the length is significantly longer, which I prefer anyways. Anyway, all are good, but for Brooks Brothers you don't have to spend North of 100EU.

Loved the RL logo joke! So true! Great video guys. I love wearing polos when I'm dressing down at work or going for something casual but still nice socially.
Basically, Polo Shirts and Chinos are the Base of my Dressing Style.
Just bought a Fred perry twin tipped Polo shirt colour oxblood. Looks Great
Tbh I like the popped collar look on well fitted polos. Not everyone can pull it off but the guy in the video certainly looked nice in the beginning with the collar popped up. Nothing wrong with it at all.
I've only worn a polo when contractually obliged (one time!) since I had to wear one for 8 years of Catholic school. Now, I don't resent the school experience and am a devout Catholic... but I draw the line at polos.
Never expected a Triple Six reference from The Gentleman's Gazette lol. Great video.
I like my Sunspel Riveria and James Perse polos. One thing the collars are not flimsy and do not curl badly
Eton’s polo shirts are my absolute favourite
I like to wear my polo shirts, both long sleeved and short sleeved, with cravats (ascots) or silk scarves. I also wear neckerchiefs or bandanas sometimes. It helps if the polo shirt is relatively plain without collar details

Three-buttoned, gusseted sleeve Orvis polos made in Peru for the win. Very rugged shirt, and the left chest logo is embroidered on a discrete loop that can be used to hang sunglasses, etc. Within the last year, they cut costs by making it two-button, and which I don't think looks right on a polo shirt.
Could you guys one day do a video on blue collar workers style? What you guys would recommend wearing and styling at a job site where you get dirty
I really like polo shirts so much so I have about 4 in my wardrobe. I always feel like they are perfect for summer and a better and smarter alternative to wearing a regular T-Shirt. Very informative video and keep up the good work!

So GG what's your option on zip-up polo's or Mao collar polo's. Since many companies have adopted the mao collar polo and some companies have retro look with zipper polo shirt from the traditional button polo's.

We've got you covered in an upcoming video!
I think Hugo Boss shirts, especially the older ones without logos, are the best you can get.
Polo shirts are my go-to wear not only for work, but for much day-to-day wear; I feel like a bum in a T-shirt, and it's often too warm for button-downs here in Austin, Texas (where we get 10 months of summer and 2 months of "bleah" weather). As such, I have more than a dozen of them, with some that I've owned for years. I also favor pique fabric (with a few remaining jersey-knits), but I do have to stand up for the merits of cotton/poly blends for their cooling effect in the heat, ease of drying, and that it just feels better on my skin. (I have Asperger's Syndrome, and we're pickiy about how things affect our senses). However, while I dislike 100% polyester, I have noticed that it's commonplace in the polos worn by military/security types, so somebody must be getting some use out of it. I do find that a front pocket is often necessary for me, and it only seems to look "wrong" if it's put onto a striped design or other large graphic. (In fact, if Ralph Lauren is going to put his logo on a shirt, that seems like the place to do it.) I also prefer 3 buttons to having 2 on the placket. My only problem is that I'd love to find longer sleeves that go further to my elbow, which looks better on my short arms. My budget isn't huge, but I've had good luck with polos from Croft & Barrow (the best), Arrow1851, and St. John's Bay in my budget range. One little thing, though: the widespread use of polos as a work uniform (esp. in retail) has misinformed many young people that it's a "dress" garment, rather than sportswear, and that therefore, it shouldn't be touched by sweat. So there is, or was, a silly notion that a T-shirt has to be worn underneath as a "sweat buffer," something that I wish had been ruled on in this video.
My personal favourite brand for polo shirts is Gant, superior look to Lacoste & RL IMO - Gucci & LV polo shirts for nights out.
I love athletic polos such as under armour, nike, and brands like them
Love j crew polos..ralph lauren i used to like but not as much nowadays..but yeah a polo and some chinos/khakis and im comfortable👌🏾
Got like 3 polos a ralph lauren one and 2 tommy ones dope man stay classy cant go wrong with a polo shirt especially tommy or ralph😮😮😮
I have noticed the collar on some of my polo shirts (regardless of brand) gets creased after machine washing and drying in a place that looks unnatural/short. Why does this happen and how can it be fixed (if at all)? Thank you in advance!!
I'd love to see a video on suspenders

6:30 A simple collar fix is to simply use an iron. You should be ironing your polo anyway, is not a causal T shirt and it should be wrinkle free.
Hey there! I really like the horizontally striped polos, even in multicolored stripes. But I'm not sure if I should wear them in my late 30s now, or when I'll be in my 40s. I want your suggestion on this please.

Personally,my favorite polos are Paul & Shark , Lacoste, Burberry& Hugo Boss I find the quality and fit rather good ,even though the quality of hugo boss has become mediocre
For some more info about polo Polo is originally from Manipur It is called sagol kangjei in Manipuri language One British officer was inspired by this game from a formal match presentex by a meitei king and this made sagol kangjei (polo) a world wide sports that we all enjoy today The world cup of polo is hosted in Manipur every year ✨
The collars always wear out first and do not lay flat after a few washes especially the cheap ones.

My first choice would be Brooks Brothers Polo Shirt then Ralph Lauren Polo shirt second.
I know you gents hate Polyester which is fine I completely understand but honestly my Cotton/Poly blended Polos are extremely breathable and durable so I enjoy them. I also alternate them with 100% Linen shirts and Linen/Cotton blends during Summer for more variety. Interesting video as always.

I once did a polo shirt + tie and jacket combo do you guys consider that acceptable? Afterall most menswear forums are against such combo
@gott2641
7 ай бұрын
I think the question you have to answer for yourself is this: Do you find it acceptable for YOU? If you like this style, then go for it! Don't let what others think or say about your wardrobe choices determine what you wear. My own style greatly differs from what I see most people wearing today, but I enjoy what I wear and ignore what naysayers I may come across might have to say-- which have been very few in person; in fact, I usually get compliments if I do run across someone with an opinion to express. Just keep doing what you do!

@@gott2641 thank's for the comment! I was really just interested on how GG answers this question since I've seen them comment on it before nevertheless thanks for the truthful words
I think the problem with polos is that they've become so ubiquitous and common that at this point they're little better than t-shirts. I think in pretty much any situation where one could wear a polo shirt, one could just as easily - and should - wear a sport shirt in a lighter fabric, sleeves rolled, and look far more stylish and far less like a 6th grader at a prep school.
The problem is that ALL 100% cotton polos shrink so much that they are unwearable after the first wash. I used to be a regular at the Goodwill donation door.
Paul & Shark polo's are my favourite I love Ralph Lauren and Lacoste but the quality has dropped in recent years.
A long sleeved polo shirt is just a rugby shirt, yep that sport where men run around after a funny shaped ball and tackle each other without the aid of helmets and 1980's power suit shoulder protection. Did you know that Elephant polo is also played, with leading nations such as Nepal, India, Thailand and Scotland. The key to collar etiquette is to pull the polo shirt on and however the collar falls is the way it stays ... don't fiddle with it !
@gentlemansgazette

Long-sleeved polo shirts and rugby shirts are similar, but do bear differences - stay tuned for an upcoming video!
For me, RL is the best, had mine since the early 90s, till then only Brooks Bros has come close, but since I only own mine for about 15 yrs vs the 30 of RL I'll have to see, Lacoste isn't for me that much, the fabric seems too flimsy, though of good quality, for my taste. (Johnny Lambs/Agnelli is/was good, too)

It’s easy to end up looking somewhat pretentious in a polo shirt, as the associations with the “preppy” culture are so strong. The best way to avoid that is to choose a cotton-linen blend polo, instead of cotton pique, avoid logos, pick darker colors or earth tones, instead of primary colors or pastel colors. Lately, slub cotton polos that have a very natural look and feel have become fashionable and those will certainly make one look less cartoonishly “wasp”.

IMO, having a LINING sewn into the collar of a polo shirt goes CONTRARY to the very nature of the shirt, which is supposed to be CASUAL and carefree. Ultimately, I guess the only true solution to a crinkled polo collar is the good ol' IRON and "elbow grease." 🧐😉
