00:00 Sweater Polos Introduction
Recent years have seen a soaring interest in the wearing of sweaters or knit polos, often teamed with other potentially trendy items such as Gurkha trousers.
01:08 What are Sweater/Knit Polos?
The sweater or knitted polo is a knitted garment structured to look like a polo shirt. This means it’ll typically possess a short body, short sleeves, and a collar. Therefore differentiating it from a knitted t-shirt.
03:11 Are Knitted Polos a New Thing? (History)
Polo shirts first came about in the late 1920s to the early 1930s. However, these polos were made from pique cotton. The unique weave of the pique cotton breathed better and allowed greater flexibility than the standard dress shirts people were expected to play tennis in.
As the popularity of the lighter, more comfortable polo shirt started to increase, so did the interest in experimenting with different materials. They could be knitted in a much simpler flat stitch, making them quicker and easier to produce.
Knitted polo shirts started to grow in popularity during the 30s and 40s, as the use of polos expanded beyond the tennis courts.
06:04 How Do You Wear Them?
→ Get the fit right. In a nutshell; not tight, but not baggy either. Although the materials in a knit polo will differ from a regular cotton polo, your knitted version should still fit the same.
→ Go for solid colors. It’s best to focus on a plain color that will allow you to showcase the style of knit.
→ Go for a vintage aesthetic. Keep your knit polo tucked into your trousers. Add some casual footwear, that mirrors the vintage feel.
09:15 So, Timeless or Trend?
We’re firmly of the opinion that they are indeed timeless--when done right! Whatever is currently in style changes, so we love it when a classic item like knitted polo experiences a surge in popularity. As an added bonus, the vintage aesthetic just happens to be what’s on trend right now.

From what I've seen, you can find many knit polos in a knitted cotton. Most of the ones I have are cotton or even a cotton-silk/cotton-linen blend. Managed to find some ones with some nice details like a cableknit or ribbed finish
You guys inspired me to start my own formal menswear channel so thank you 👍🏻

I’ve worn long sleeve knit polos with my tweed jackets during the fall and winter. I’ve paired that with either wool flannel trousers or corduroy trousers. I’ve used polo instead of a shirt and tie for an even more casual look.
Probably my most worn casual shirt outside of winter and fall. Despite my hatred for the Talented Mr. Ripley, I wear the Dickie knit all the time...tucked in with high waisted gurkhas is too good !

I’ve had two sweater knit polo from Todd Synder for a few years now and they’re still my spring/summer go-tos. The blue/brown tipped one I pair with a sport coat and high-waisted pants (from Pini Parma) frequently. I think they’re an excellent addition to anyone’s wardrobe.

Those looking to sport a pair of knitted polos in the summer or a place with a tropical climate, I highly would recommend Mooncastle Osaka. They keep me cool, comfy and looking good all day long!
I’ve been wearing vintage knitted polos for years since finding them in many thrift stores in high school (in the 80s). I recently purchased a modern knitted polo but have yet to receive it, so I can’t comment on the difference(s). Thanks for another great video! ✌🏼
I bought a bunch of them the past year and I love them to bits. Always get compliments when I wear em
i really like the look of knitted polos
From my experience I think you need a good figure to ccpull off a knitted polo as they tend to cling to the body more than a cotton polo.
Nothing is timeless, but knitted polos come pretty close. They're a summer staple in my wardrobe.

The standard cotton polo is more timeless than a knitted polo. I've never seen one ever worn in Australia, but of course it might be a different story in the US.

Love knitted polos and shirts. Often find myself looking for and getting more of them in compare to regular polos. Also you can match your watch, with Nato or other cloth bands with it. Cheers 🥂
Been wearing kitted polos for a couple of years. What’s great is that you can dress them up or down and still appear stylish. Not many guys are seen wearing them either.
This channel turned me on to Uniqlo years ago. Funny enough, Sven was wearing one of their pique polo shirts. Anyway, I bought two of their merino long sleeve polo shirts. Good stuff.
I'm a big fan of knit polos! I like mine in linen, lightweight cotton or blends of the two for the summer. I don't really wear them tucked in, though, because I find most of them are cut shorter than pique polos.

I usually wear my polos untucked as well.
Interesting thoughts on a tricky item to get right. The jacket or top to wear over the polo jumper can be difficult to coordinate. My thoughts are the top looks best on occasions when a jacket is not required. Can look ok under a light weight Mac on those spring and autumn days when the temperature is middling.
Knitted, collared pullover shirts have been "a thing" since the late Thirties... I'd venture to say that they're pretty "classic". At least I've worn them for the last 45 years 😁 I'd like to see a few manufacturers make them with a little more pizzazz, though... There used to be more unique choices years ago. I fondly remember a long sleeved black wool one that I had many years ago... I bought it as new/old stock. It was made in the late Forties... The unique parts of it were that it had a convertible collar with long points and it had white picking around the edges of the collar and placket. I miss that particular shirt.
I wore a plain navy knit polo with charcoal grey trousers and black cap oxfords. My GF and her friends loved it, my GF said I looked like James Bond. Highly recommend this combo gents!
I’m wearing a 70s’ Brooks Bros. knit polo right now! Love it.
I have one long-sleeve knitted wool polo. I like it.
Kelsey Grammer was wearing a nice long sleeved knit Polo as his character Frasier in his show of the same name in one episode. I now only wear long sleeved shirts and I really took notice. It looked soft so it was probably Merino wool.
I don't care for piqué fabric so knit polos are the only option for me. However, mine are cotton as I will save the wool for sweaters and more elevated garments. Paul James Knitwear makes some pretty good polos with the waist ribbing in short and long sleeve variety. Highly recommended if you don't have Permanent Style or Smedley money.
I was expecting this video so badly i think not every cloth of piece born after the 60s is always a trend i think some clothing items can be timeless too like demin pants or white minimalist sneakers
I'm all for this in a long-sleeve/sweater format, where it would be a great outlet for some of those fancy new lightweight wools that they like to push nowadays. But I can't imagine wearing a knitted, short-sleeve polo in Austin's heat: I'll stick to my cotton/polys.
With your channel having more and more videos all the time (great thing), I think it’s great to refer to other video’s. Going through 7 years worth of videos can be daunting for a new person. The sportscoat crew neck sweater combination looks good as a casual smart look. I figure subbing out the crew neck for a knitted polo would have the same effect. Experiment gentlemen!
Well, that J Crew Polo at 6:42 is amazing.

I have been wearing knitted polos for years, on and off, and have several in my wardrobe. I don't understand the hate against them but I guess that's why we all have individual tastes!! I like that the texture elevates them a bit. I see what you mean about the striped/blocked ones looking like a bowling shirt but you can find those styles which manage to avoid looking like that, you just have to choose carefully. Also, I would pretty much never tuck one in. Most of them have waistbands FGS! (much like sweaters/jumpers) and the look of them tucked into Gurkha trousers seems jarring to me and a little odd. That's just my opinion though and I do agree that they are timeless, if done well.
Preston is always fun.
I was wearing knitted polos for years.
Is knit polo more breathable than pique polo? Which one is more comfortable in hot summer?
I don't know if it's knit but I am sat here wearing a polo, I got a couple as I wanted to move away from t-shirts.
I don't really like the button up variation. But I'm curious if these should be worn tucked in?
Do you recommend no button, two button or three button? Which number of button is more formal or less formal?
If you've got muscles, polos look amazing.
I just ordered a 50s-style sweater polo, hence it is timeless right
Really enjoyed Nathan’s burgundy polo at 1:00 , what’s the brand?
Any good websites or places to buy some knit polos?
Hahahahaha....Preston + Disco.... Not sure how I feel about that. Conflicted. On the sweater polo front - just wear a knit sweater. no need for polo collars and extra.

I'm not sure if the team covered this in a previous video but does the team have a way to repair moth holes? I have a vintage 1964 brooks brothers 3 piece suit and discovered it has moth holes when I took it out of storage to wear since I lost some weight. It was one of my favorite suits so I really hope it can be saved.
@gentlemansgazette

Moth holes are typically repaired by either patching the hole from the underside with a piece of (matching) cloth, or through invisible mending where the cloth is re-woven using threads taken from an unseen section of the garment. There is a price difference here, and invisible mending can be quite expensive!

Almost all polos are made from knit fabric, but not all polos are technically "knit polos." The difference is in the seam. If the pieces are knit together, then it is a knit polo. If it is cut and sewn, then it is not.
More Merino!
Some look good. Most make you look like an extra on the Sopranos
Gabagool shirts are timeless
technically a sweater and a knit are different things, a pique is a knit

I'm actually into making one by myself. I think due to their simplissity their pretty timeless. Also by choosing differenf patterns like zickzack, left mesh, right mesh (is that how you call it. I'm not a native speaker. I'm calling about those interlocking loops, that make up the fabric.) The oppertunity to decide for other techniques like needlebinding, groocheting... we can give them kinda their own personalities without making it a special piece for a special event. Bonus point they have no motivs. (Yep I'm more into patterns than motivs. But I would use simple patterns.) I'm just applying the rules I learned at art college. But between a flat, a lamp, a shelf... or even cloths I would say you can apply those rules.
I've never worn one. Sounds like the material will matter a lot. I think I'll stay away from it.
I dont understand the point of a shortsleeve polo shirt...that is also a sweater. Like leather shorts.
No thanks. Fit people or models look good in almost anything, only a few polos shown look stylish.
