Pollock: the most fished fish in the world

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

You've probably eaten Pollock, even if you've never heard of it.
It's the fish in Filet-O-Fish, fish sticks, and even crab sticks for sushi. It's also a window into the global supply chain.

They serve this all the time in my college dining hall and I finally looked up the fish out of curiosity of why they serve it almost every day if fish is usually relatively expensive. Got my answer but I figured it was because it is a cheaper fish.

Interesting video, although I wanted to point out that the fish displayed at the beginning of the video is actually a Coalfish/Saithe and not a typical pollock, pollock belong to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollachius_pollachius and coalfish belongs to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollachius_virens - I also believe that the statistics in your video are classing all pollachius in this number, so it is slightly misleading that it is not one species of fish that is most fished, but actually several variants of a family of similar fish

What’s the cost of catching and shipping it to China. Then shipping it back here. Then trucking it to all the distribution centers. Then to your table. You’re telling me that people hear can box up a processed fillet o fish sandwich (poorly) for $10 an hour but they can’t gut a fish for the same money in their own backyard? We’re in bigger trouble than I thought.

'Some UK fish trivia! - Pollock' is not the same fish as the fish known as 'Pollack' in the UK - spelled different, but .. here's the really confusing bit - they are usually spelled the the same anyway and, understandably, assumed to be the same. They are different to eat, for sure. 'Pollock' is Coalfish. 'Pollack' is common around UK coasts , and is relatively poor eating, sadly. The "Pollock" that UK residents get served in a chippy, will almost certainly not have been caught 'off the local pier' and is almost certainly going to be the tastier 'Pollock - aka Coley/Coalfish' . When I fish, I throw Pollack back. I keep the Coalfish. Shame that , as Pollack are much, much more numerous to catch. (If any of that is incorrect, somebody can advise ;) )
