If you're in to answering a question, what polaris quad has double rear shocks? This is supposed to be an 87 model year. But I don't know enough to determine how much of this bike is original.

The over ride button is a throttle/speed limiter in reverse so you don't floor it in reverse & crash. Has nothing to do with 4x4. Push it you can floor it in reverse with it not pushed it will only go 2mph or so.

Wrong the override not overdrive does not make it 2wd or 4wd in reverse it is to cut the rev limiter so you will have more power in reverse you can go wide open in reverse if you need to that's how the override works nothing to do with 4wd or 2wd

So cool to see your post. I picked up a not so clean (basket case) 300 4x4 project from a guy in Missouri. I’m completely going through it & restoring it the best I can within reason. The biggest surprise was finding that the output shaft that drives the sprockets was sheered in half. “How?” you ask… I have no idea. But, I’m gonna get experience pulling the trans, splitting it & rebuilding it. That’s kind of how the whole thing is and I’m probably going to do a video myself on it. I’m going to be into it way more than what it’s worth but, they’re great machines & worth saving i.m.o.

I just bought a 1999 scrambler 400 4x4 from the original owner. Been a garage queen for 20 years and still has original tires! Man I love that 2 stroke!! I’ve refused to buy another Polaris for years because of all the trouble I’ve had with them....but the old 2 strokes are different 👍🏼. I think there best quads were the 2 stroke years! This 99 scrambler is a lot better machine than the brand new 2016 sportsman 570 I had. I bought it thinking maybe they had improved their machines but nope it was constant trouble. I never had trouble with 2 stroke machines back in the 90s. So I wouldn’t trade this 99 scrambler 400 for a brand new one! I only got 1200 bucks in it and for a few hundred in mods it will run with anything that has 4 wheels on it 😎. In stock form it already outruns the 400ex guys by a few quad lengths. A simple pipe is another 10hp which puts them at 48hp. A few more things and it’s a easy 60hp. That’s A LOT of power for the size and weight of a scrambler!

I can’t speak for all Polaris’s but on my two Scrambler 500’s(01,05). If I am in 4x4 and put it in Reverse only the rear wheels receive limited power. When the yellow override button is pressed and held it engages 4x4 and allows full power. My 4x4 switch is the type that slides to the left and has a light that indicates 4x4 is engaged.

Yea I’m sure he’s got 7500 to blow, you see what he’s riding? Seriously, the cheapest bang for your buck is an old Kawasaki prairie 650 or Brute Force 650 or 750. Front diffs don’t like cold weather, but you can lock the front diff with a pull from bars. Lots of vtwin power. However, I’ve been using these a long time, they are the same as Arctic, the front cylinder gets crammed with snow and will inevitably be the cylinder to lose a piston. Grizzly 650 single would be ideal. I had a red and gray 350l. 3 wheel drive at best because of chain front and rear drive, front is where it sucks. Right side chain, right side spin

I used to think Polaris was trash too then I owned an explorer very similar to this one and when I say I beat the hell out of it I mean it. Doesn't matter how cold it is it always starts even tho it's a 2 stroke and instantly hold it at limiter till warm and it's still not blown up
