13:20 Recommendations & Conclusions
Over the last two weeks I’ve systematically tested the heart rate tracking performance of the new Polar Vantage V3, and the results are, well, disappointing to say the least(point). The Polar Vantage V3 is the first Polar watch with the new Generation 4 Optical Heart Rate sensor, so my expectations were high. In this video I’ll share the results of my initial scientific testing, and you can judge for yourself what you think of the results. I tested the Vantage V3 for indoor cycling, outdoor cycling, running and weight lifting for a total of 24 workouts and I’ll share all the results with you.
Hello everyone, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. In this video I will dive straight into the testing, and you can search for the specs on Polar’s website, so let’s get to it! First a disclosure: Polar did send me this watch for testing, but they did not have any influence on this video, and they did not get to see it before release. But I guess that will become clear when you see how the watch performed on me.
So, this doesn’t look too good for the Polar Vantage V3; for all exercises except weight lifting, the older Polar Watches did better than the Vantage V3 with the new sensor. Yes, some of these other watches are also lighter, but I don’t think that’s the issue here. I was even afraid it might have difficulty with my left wrist for some reason, so I also tried wearing the Vantage 3 on the other arm, and this didn’t make a difference. I hope that the new hardware in the V3 will prove to be superior to the old sensor, and that these are all issues that can be solved with updates over time. We have seen this for other brands. Still, the results I got were really surprising to me. I’ll also be testing the sleep stage tracking and GPS tracking of the Vantage V3, and I’ll share those results in my full review. Also, please watch some other reviewers, since these are just the results I got for my particular physiology.

HlR monitoring in watches has made huge improvements in the last two years and I feel testing like you have been a massive contributor to that improvement. These results are astonishingly poor for an upper brand. Hope they can get it fixed.

This channel is an eye opener! Every other metric that these watches/ tracker markets depend on upon accuracy of the sensors! No matter how cheap or expensive if the basics are not done right , I mean what's the point of selling them? Just for profits fooling consumers? Amazfit designs the best watches for budget but their sensors are crap and haven't learned anything over the years. Thankfully the Fitbit charge 6 made some progress recently, I think we owe TQS alot for impartial data based reviews which is the way it should be.

Great review. I have the Polar Vantage 3 since its release date. Also have other watches to compare. I think is good and accurate as Garmin Fenix 7pro and EPIX pro. Yesterday Polar updated the firmware so it would be really nice to have a revision review from your side to check out the results once again.

Fact is Polar have lost their status as the most accurate HRM. By pursuing the wrist based OHR market they have made a bad mistake and simply lost to APPLE. All Polar's apps/functions (sleep monitoring, stress, calories etc) are now based on algorithms that are feed inaccurate HR ! So not trust worthy and as inaccurate as cheaper brands

I wanted to thank you Bob for the reviews, as it helped me buy the watch I use in my workouts. Before I had an Amazfit T-Rex that had a problem with the GPS. As the problem was very serious, I had to buy another watch. It was after seeing the reviews here on your channel that I chose to buy the Huwaei GT-Runner. It was definitely a good choice. Thank you for your help.

@thequantifiedscientist HRM during weightlifting - *Overall* Whoop is the most accurate for determining **strain** because it incorporates accelerometer data and uses Velocity-based training calculations. H10 may record the heart rate well or more accurate but heart rate alone cannot and does not correctly determine strain in weightlifting exercises! only VBT can. it's different for endurance training

Polar would be better off re releasing the V800, I tried Vantage M and Pacer Pro and even Garmin Instinct 2X and I keep going back to the V800 paired with the H10 hr monitor. The V800 still has the most visible screen in any conditions, cool feature like taps and heart touch and the Polar Flow website is still the best for analysing your training sessions. Reviewers obsess over GPS tracking but none seem to test for an accurate and consistent pace speed, which is far more useful.

Hi, Thank you for presenting the data. Hearing your interpretation of the graph shown at 3:40, is it not fair to expect some of a lag? Considering that the H10 measures electrical activity and the optical sensor measures the pulse (cardiac output). Hence, there is likely to be a delay while the blood circulates to compensate for the increased demand, initially adjusting with vasoconstriction and then dilating when the stroke volume adjusts to the demand.

Why do manufacturers continue to bring out watches with terrible fitness tracking, the only reason I can imagine is that most people do not research and just buy watches for looks and brand. I am out of contract with my mobile this black Friday, so I will be going over to apple, I thought about Huawei but it would bug me that all the sleep functionality was pretend Mickey Mouse toy watch standard. Looks like a 15 plus with an SE watch for me.
