@@jodesy1 Ok, *technically* the anime doesn't confirm either way if it's male or female, so making the comment about Togepi only being shown as female in the anime *still* wrong(besides, as far as I can tell only one Togepi that appeared in the anime was ever given a confirmed gender). The closest we get to confirmation, according to Bulbapedia, is in one of the games (Stadium 2) were Misty uses a Togetic, which is male.

But, with most birds of prey, the females are larger stronger and prettier. Take the Peregrine Falcon for example, the females can have an entirely different color on them, blue or blue-gray, on their backs (called a hood and cape marking) Also, Peacocks are only male, Peafowl are only female. Starters have an 7:1 ratio to reduce the chances to make them reproduce at the begin of the game, except if you have a Ditto Same thing with the "rare" Pokémon like Togepi, Eevee, or all the fossil Pokémon

Actually the Gothitelle line makes perfect sense, because gothic lolita fashion was actually created and popularised by a male Visual kei musician, fashion designer and crossdresser Mana-sama. He even has his own lolita brand called Moi-même-Moitié, and wears gothic lolita himself.

I think the people in the common section honestly need to chill. Pokemon have genders because they are living beings, that's kinda it. The only thing that I want is for the gender ratio for starters to be more even.

i think the reason they have those odds is to explain why they are so rare, any species with a 1/7 female ratio would probably die out

The togepi line should be 50/50

The Gothitelle line having a chance of being male isn't all that unreasonable when you know a little more about the Lolita subculture. One of the biggest figures in Lolita is Mana-sama, who's credited with popularising the fashion and owns a very prominent and beloved brand in the Lolita community despite being male. Also, the writer of one of the most loved stories within the Lolita community, Kamikaze Girls, is a man. It's also noteworthy that there's actually a considerable amount of men that take active parts in the Lolita community despite it being a very feminine style. So really it makes sense that there's a 25% chance that the Gothitelle line can be male, at least to those of us in the subculture.

I'm amazed by the comments that there really are people who are so bent out of shape over gender ratios in pokemon lol

Its ok to mess with gender stereotypes and I actually like the way it is for the most part, but it is a little odd to base a pokemon design off of historical things in time that have been only known to be associated with one gender. If you are going to make a pokemon after a well know and old magical creature thats only known to be female and then make its 80% male, why use that design at all? I understand creative freedom but some might find it a little disrespectful to the myths and things used.

@@azuredem Did some counting and about 40 percent of his examples are not factual but opinionated (which is not a small percentage). And even if only 1 of his examples was opinionated its still a valid point to criticize.

The Honedge line caught me off guard too, I recently (in the past 3 days) started playing a game that has 6th gen Pokemon in it (I've never had a 3DS to play actual 6th and 7th gen games) and I got one, and when I seen it was female I was like "Whaaa?" cause I too figured it'd be genderless.

I got a male fennekin... and in Moon I got a female Incineroar...

I once found a female Eevee just to evolve it into sylveon and it took me like 30 min

Also, some of the pokemon names, like Mr Mime aren't as gendered in Japanese. Its name in JP is Barrierd... which is what it sounds like, barrier, referring to its invisible screens it makes. Gender ratios weren't a thing back in gen 1 so I think when gen 2 came around was an unfortunate circumstance. I feel like the localization team might have not gave it that name if gen 1 had gender ratios. But then there are some that are the exact same like Togekiss, which is yeah ig? lol

yeah its feminine, but that doesn't mean guys can't, plus considering its origin and how Kalos is based off France doesn't make it too uncommon

I remember looking through so much fanart of Eevee and it's Eeveelutions and seeing so many Eevee's presented as Female I was genuinely taken aback to learn how rare a Female Eevee actually was. I had always considered the Eevee line to be more feminine overall. You could say Jolteon and Umbreon may look more masculine, but I wouldn't have been surprised if they turned out female either.

+Sham Wow Guy Chalk it up to Gameplay and Story Segregation. The designers don't want you having access to multiple starters or Eevees, and since people are unlikely to trade you their ones they have to discourage early breeding of them. Since they don't want to make them ALL male (since that would make no sense and would also limit them since they wouldn't be able to learn egg moves) they compromise and make males rare. A casual player is therefore unlikely to get a female one. A dedicated player could soft-reset until they get one, but it's really not worth the effort. It's all moot once you get access to Ditto, but by then it's generally the lategame and the advantage you'd get from another starter/Eeveelution is rendered useless by the amount of grinding you'd have to do to get it leveled up. Apologies for the text wall. I just find these kind of design decisions really interesting. :)

David Ward One of my favourite things about Gen 2 is the fact they give you access to Ditto on the same route that the Daycare is on. A few steps on from that route is Goldenrod, where you can get an Eevee. I remember Completing Crystal with a full team of Eeveelutions plus an overleveled Eevee that had been in the daycare for way too long. Fun times!

EonLowyvern Huh. I didn't know that (I'm not a fan of the Johto games I'm afraid0. There are some interesting design choices on the routes where you can catch Ditto though. First, you don't actually have to walk through ANY grass. That's pretty rare for a route. And as a result, casual players could go right through those areas without encountering a single Pokemon. Second is that Ditto has a 5% encounter rate, making it pretty rare to find. And finally, first-time players would have no idea that Ditto was there, since the only trainers that have DIttos are in Kanto (at least for HGSS. I couldn't find data for GSC). So to summarize. Ditto is a Pokemon with a tiny encounter rate, in an area where they don't have to encounter anything, and they wouldn't know it was there. Chances are pretty high that players wouldn't find it on their first playthrough, particularly since the internet was still young at that point. However, it is interesting that they did make it an option for players who knew what they were doing. That suggests to me that it's sort of a 'reward' for beating the game, in that when you replay it you know about things like that to make it more interesting. I'm actually replaying HGSS now (despite my qualms with it) so thanks for telling me about it! That'll make it more interesting :)
