The theory for the mv itself is that it’s Moonbyul who’s trying to get through the day not thinking about her lover because the thoughts are a ‘turn on’ Notice Moonbyul turns off the tv when she sits down and Seori turns it on when she gets up. Seori is being ignored by Byul because at that point she represents the thoughts Byul is trying not to get carried away on until she sees her lover The scene at the bed is the part of the day when Seori is finally there and Moonbyul is there with her If you read the script scene Moonbyul wrote for this part she calls her lover saying she’s been waiting for her all day and then it’s the part where the lover is finally there and she turns and smiled at her

I love Moonbyul for this. So often in media (not just songs) people write off possible lesbian content with "oh they're just friends" or other similarly dismissive statements. She left pretty much nothing up to doubt here lmao. Also Seori is an amazing artist in her own right and like Moonbyul she's really supportive of LGBT. She actually has queer couples featured in 2 of her MVs (Lovers In The Night and Dive)

The best touch I love about this video is how it’s shot for the female gaze. The slow lingering shots and the way she looks at MoonByul with love and want. You can tell she’s in love. It’s very nice touch to sell the romance. Plus the lyrics also point to there being passion not just sex. I think it’s very sultry and artistic but sweet and beautiful at the same time.

By the way, I don't think I saw anyone mentioning this and most people didn't notice when watching/reacting to the MV, but the lyrics of the chorus aren't the same for the last one sung. the first few were sung by Seori, and the lyrics were "from your head to your toes" and "on your lap", where the lyrics of the last chorus (sung by Byul) said "from my head to my toes" and "on my lap". Byul highlighted in one of her radio show episodes that she specifically changed these words in her chorus to make it a dialogue between Seori and herself. 😌

I thought it was cute that you called such an erotic song cute and (naturally) I have a theory. But before that, the ghost thing. I also thought Seori was a ghost at first and then got very confused by the final scene. Fortunately Moonbyul posted the MV story outline, which confirms that your comment at the end is the correct interpretation - Seori isn't physically present until the end but is seen because they think about each other constantly even when they're apart. Imo what makes the MV cute is the retro set, the comfy homey clothing and the mundane activities. Isn't it oh so Leave It to Beaver or Partridge Family or even Norman Rockwell? The point she's trying to make must be that their erotic feelings and relationship are just as normal and wholesome as mom's apple pie or kimchi. Shutdown was already groundbreaking lyrically but, as is often the case with MMM, she took it one step further in the MV and added another layer that expands the meaning of the song. My favorite Moonbyul song is Eclipse but her new single Lunatic is up there. It''s also cute but in a totally different way than Shutdown. 😂 Edit: I forgot to mention something about the lyrics that a moomoo told me. The line about passing a mountain and crossing a bridge is a Korean expression referring to a woman's breasts and genitals. The song is so sexual that Moonbyul was surprised it wasn't age restricted. Moonbyul talked about it on her radio show with Hwasa, who complained that she went through hell over one word in I'm a Light (Bit) while Moonbyul's sexy song sailed right through the censors.

  • @donut4984

You're right in that "passing a mountain" refers to the breasts but crossing the bridge actually means going through the legs to get to "touchdown" 🤭 as the word "dal" in korean can be translated to either bridge or leg

Oh my gosh I laughed so hard finding out I was right! XD It is a really sexy song, but I like your explanation of it a lot! Thinking about sex and talking about the fact that people think about sex as just a normal piece of a relationship and completely healthy is pretty amazing and I'm glad the sensors must have been men who didn't get the blatant references. XDD We got an excellent song out of it!

@@kayepopreactions43 A bit of a gratuitous cheap shot at guys being clueless, not that we don't deserve it but it's more likely to be about other things than sexual innuendos (insert "Don't worry, not offended, laughing too" emoji). If we haven't mentioned it, more than any group that I'm aware of Mamamoo has been openly supportive of the lgbtq+ community for a long time and tho Shutdown is a step beyond anything they've done previously this isn't their first gay rodeo, so to speak. Other examples include the MV for Um Oh Ah Yeah, their 2016 MMA award show performance, the Hip MV, and the MV for Wheein's solo song Goodbye. MMM is often called the gayest group in kpop.

Really love your reactions and your thoughts throughout this videos, you are right about the sexy approach for this songs but i personally feel that moonbyul wants to show the intimacy in a relationship, the longing and wanting was there rather than showing it in mv the songs perfectly conveys that, which for me is really brilliant and i keep loving this song day by day and still talking about it. Moonbyul as an artist and lyricists for me is really a poet in kpop, she's just amazing with words even the way she spoke her words to people is amazing sometimes, (as she also mentioned that she takes inspiration for lyrics by reading poems/poetry) and its my favourite things to pay attention to the lyrics whenever she wrote/composed it. All of her solo's stuff had been a proof of how good Lyricist she is but for instance I recommend you to check out her recent release song 'ddu ddu ddu' and'for me', these songs just lyrically amazing and able to clench my heart and i leave it at that. And if you like those maybe check out 'Absence' too i swear you will not regret it! Thats all i hope you enjoy listening to more of her and mamamoo songs to come.! Ps: and if you are interested more about how lyrically genius poet moonbyul is you should chect out mamamoo immortal songs performances (there are 13 of them) as she wrote all her rap parts by herself. (in the show they were covering old songs which originally don't have rap parts for her so she made them, otherwise she will not have any part at all which is sad i guess) sorry for the long entry i hope you enjoy it. i love moonbyul so much and this made me so proud of her, she's so brave to release a song like this, like sexy lyrics, the "she said" part, and featuring a woman! i always expect gay things from her but this gets the prize lol i'm happy she got praised a lot for this song tho, cause it could've been the other way around and i don't even want to imagine people bashing her for releasing this kind of content;-; thank you for your reaction!! i laughed a lot lol i don't know if you're taking recommendations but Onewe (RBW too) has very good lyrics. when i started listening to kpop i kinda started to lose a little bit of interest in the lyrics because they weren't what i used to like in other non korean music that i listen to, but onewe's lyrics hit different, some of them really are like poems, specially the ones that YongHoon writes (the main vocalist), and they write and compose their own songs! they're also self formed~ if you are interested, their debut song Reminisce About All has very emotional lyrics, as well as A Book in Memory and many others have a wonderful day, and thank you once again for reacting to this song, it's a whole experience lol

"In the architecture of our souls, the universe begins with our eyes closed." - Shutdown reminds me of this lyric from a song by Sleeping at last (Overturn). I felt that Shutdown encapsulate beautifully the beginning of exploration of not just each other, but this new journey in a relationship. It's clearly a sexy song but it's intimate sexy you know? like emotionally heavy intimacy? this isn't physical action, this is making love. There's a sense of reverence to it. i also love how respectful it is to W|W relationship, this mv and song isn't for the male gaze, or the sexual media gaze, it's written from a place of pure respect and love.

A korean friend of mine told me a while back that the actual lyrics have a more sexual meaning in places due to the use of idioms and things like that. for example; according to her, the phrases "passing the mountains" and "crossing a bridge" mean kissing between a womans breasts and between her legs respectively. I love this song though. The lyrics are romantic and sexy yes, but the melody is beautiful and their voices are 🤌🤌 the only version of this song I've ever heard that gave me more life (while also leaving me dead) was the one where Moonbyul and Solar performed it during a Mamamoo+ concert 😍

kudgeon, per usual, has some great insights and gathered great information to share, but i want to add a few things to it (though, like him, i'm an older male so more or less an outsider on this topic) first, those lines about passing the mountains and crossing a bridge are apparently phrases used by lesbians specifically to get past... not just censors, but those strictly against their existence in general (south korea still being a hugely conservative country, though it's slowly been getting better with lgbtq+ and even female empowerment... though at the same time, the ultra-right-wing anti-feminism movement is getting a lot of new young members. latter part is sad but not unexpected) and then another huge thing i'm surprised nobody has brought up yet is part of the lyrics themselves, that 'she said' in english... her entire career moonbyul has purposefully used gender-neutral terms for any lover or love interest she's mentioned in her lyrics (which is a lot) specifically so listeners can paint that person however they like, particularly whatever their preferred gender is (of course, translations tend to make it masculine because that's what they're used to, so the lyrics lose some 'oomph' then). but here, she specifically went with 'she said' and in english so nobody could say 'oh, she meant a boy instead of a girl here' like often happened previously... small thing, but also absolutely huge mamamoo as a whole and as individuals have always been about pushing boundaries, particularly those they feel shouldn't exist, and here byul did a masterful job of exactly that while managing to perfectly toe the line so that things won't come crashing down and brand her as someone those in charge need to shut down for her views. (i mean, a lot of korean men are saying exactly that latter part, but she's still barely within what is considered 'in good taste' by those who control such things)

Thank you! I'm glad you mentioned the part about "She said" being in English specifically for those reasons. People will often try to fit a narrative to what they believe rather than broaden their beliefs based on a narrative and I think that's especially easy when you can blame language barriers and translation error so it really is genius of her to remove that excuse completely. :) Very great stuff!
