There's no need to doubt the meaning of the lyrics. Moonbyul herself said that the kyrics are erotic and will make you question seori and byul's relationship. She said that lol. It really is sapphic ❤️

I don't know of another lesbian kpop song with such erotic lyrics. Another groundbreaker by Moonbyul. Mamamoo has never played it safe or rested on their laurels and continue to experiment musically, speak their minds, and push the k-envelope regarding gender and sexuality. I was confused by Seori's ghost-like presence in the MV until I saw a translation of the script Moonbyul posted on MMM's community tab. Seori is only there in Moonbyul's mind until the last scene. Imo depicting Shutdown via a homey set with the two of them dressed in comfy clothes going about mundane, daily life is Moonbyul's way of saying that the lesbian eroticism expressed in the lyrics is just as normal as hetero desires and erotic feelings or eating cereal for breakfast. We can only hope that people take that message to heart. Seori is a solo artist who debuted in 2020 and as far as I know she writes her own songs so she's more than just a pretty face with a fabulous voice. She has released a handful of MVs that you'll want to check out but I'd recommend Running Through the Night and Dive With You for starters. While I'm recommending songs, my favorite k-lesbian song is I'm Your Girl? by the duo Khan. It's not as radical or explicit as Shutdown but it's a great song that gets better with repeat listens. The lyrics are about love rather than sex and are more ambiguous about who they're directed to but Khan confirmed it's about a lesbian relationship.

please call it wlw song not lesbian. that’s pretty restrictive of women loving women relationship. it could be about a bi girl and a lesbian girl or pansexual girl. so if you don’t know someone’s sexual orientation don’t assume

@@ohibo7676 I've noticed an avoidance of the word lesbian lately and wondered whether someone would object to my use of it. Had to smile at your repeated "girl" - in the old days that word was limited to describing children and adolescents and men would get called out for calling a woman a girl. Anyway, thanks for correcting me. I have no problem with going along with your suggestion but since Shutdown is not about being bi or pansexual but it is about a woman loving a woman I also don't see the problem with describing the song and the relationship depicted as lesbian. I don't see it as making an assumption but perhaps you can answer a couple questions that would clarify it for me since I'm not up to date on current terminology: If one or both of the characters in the MV were to identify as bi or pansexual would they not describe their relationship with each other as lesbian and instead call it w/w? In real life speech does anyone say they're in a w/w relationship rather than a lesbian relationship or is that just a term used online to avoid making assumptions? Thanks!

@@kudgeond755 i know that the song isn’t about being bi or pan but nothing is confirmed and i think using a broader term is a better choice bc i believe it would make more people feel validated, at least, i think i would feel. lesbian is a term used for a person who doesn’t identify as male that is attracted to other people who don’t identify as a males. u said it yourself, it’s about a woman loving a woman so wouldn’t wlw be a better description of this video? i have seen some people use the expression woman loving woman in real life but i’ve never found myself in a conversation where i would be able to use that term, so i don’t really know how to answer your question. maybe two girls in a relationship would describe it as a lesbian relationship, but some others maybe don’t like the term and prefer wlw. also english isn’t my first language so i didn’t know using “girl” to refer to them was a wrong or offensive word, i just figured that since they are young adults that would kind of work but apparently it doesn’t so i’m sorry. btw im a girl myself so what does that sentence about men using that word have to do with my comment? i also didn’t know about this avoidance of the word lesbian, could you please explain why that’s a thing recently?

@@ohibo7676 I mentioned my old memory of being told not to call women "girls" only because I found it amusing to be corrected about the word lesbian while you referred to women as girls several times. Back in the 70's it was thought that calling grown women "girls" was belittling them. These days I don't think women are offended by being referred to as girls (as long as no offence is intended) any more than men are by being called boys but there might be some hard core language police out there who would disagree. All I can say about the avoidance of the word lesbian is that I've noticed a preference for "sapphic" these days when lesbian would commonly be used in the past. Maybe because I lived in San Francisco for a long time and had a variety of friends there who proudly called themselves lesbians, including one who referred to herself as a transsexual lesbian, so I'm not used to it as a term someone might not like or want to avoid in preference to something as generic as w/w. Personally I don't buy the argument that using w/w would make more people feel validated by Shutdown (art transcends gender and sexuality or what is male me doing here, after all?) or that it's important to make a distinction between w/w and lesbian but as i said I have no problem with using the term w/w if that's what you prefer so that's what I'll do, just like when I stopped calling women girls back in the 70's. :)

@@kudgeond755 i talked about my experience, since this is about a couple of women being in love, i felt like i was getting represented as well but seeing people only refer to this as a song about two lesbian women kind of confused me, since there’s a more generic term that includes more people and it felt like assuming. of course art trascends gender, race and more but since this is about a community that for years hasn’t been represented of course it will ‘hit’ me a lot as part of that community. a lot of different minorities are getting representation in the media these years so i don’t see the problem in mentioning that this song could also include or refer to people that identity as bisexual and not only lesbian. i too have friends that are proud to be lesbians like i am proud of being bi. i dont understand the ‘i dont buy thing’ tho. i don’t think that the wlw term is in anyway offensive so…

Moonbyul knew what she was doing when she wrote this song! When I first watched the video I was like “okay this is so cute,” then I saw comments on twitter from moos and looked up the lyrics. Definitely took me by surprise, but no one does it like her though! To everyone’s surprise it actually garnered a lot of positivity from knetizens. Also Moonbyul herself even said that the lyrics were a spicy 👀 I have missed your reactions and I totally understand the school schedule. You do you. We’ll be waiting ❤️👏🏽

thanks for reacting, Moonbyul is talented not only as an artist, she is talented inviting 2 artists who suits the most to her songs, creating a unbelievable chemistry. Her album is going to release on 19th, all the songs are related and has a story line, she even wrote the script of the story. PS. there is a concept i believe after watching her teaser, "Love shapes in different shapes and form. So believe me this is normal. Please believe me I am not mad I'm just fine. Trust me. I have no problem, it's just the new normal."

@@Burned_To_Ash maybe i’m wrong but i’ve never seen them talk neither their gender identity nor sexual orientation so, since they use she/her and never said that they are anything but cis women i think of them as women. i made that comment because it’s clearly about two women in love, but they can be other things other than lesbian right? so why would you get offended? wlw relationship would be a broader way of defining the relationship portrayed in the song. as a bisexual women this song really comforts me and it may seem dumb but people not acknowledging us does effect me.

omg YAY THANKS FOR SEEING MY COMMENT. I just knew you'd enjoy it hahaha (as a fellow gay 😂). Just fyi, Moonbyul straight up confirmed it's an erotic song, so yes, it's everything you're thinking. ;) And Korean fans also let us know that there were additional innuendos--"Passing that mountain, and crossing a bridge" allude to the chest and legs (mountain and bridge, respectively) so uhhh... 👀 100% this song is talking about adult activities, but I also just love how poetic and sensual it is rather that vulgar. "Melt me in your short breaths" is just SUCH A SEXY LINE. And the "um, ah" moan after "tonight"... 🥵 I seriously can't get over these lyrics. Also that subtle exchange; it was Seori saying "on your lap until the morning," and it ended with Moonbyul saying "on my lap until the morning." This is actually just a pre-release, and Moonbyul's full album is dropping on 1/19. Wheein has a new album dropping on 1/16 too! You don't have to react to these, but I just thought I'd let you know. :) I'm glad to see that you're well, and I hope school is going okay! Totally understand that it can get busy. Thanks for reacting! EDIT: Oh also! As someone else mentioned Seori is a solo artist, and she actually often features same sex couples in her MVs! Explains why she was 100% down to do this hahaha.
