I had a similar encounter at Stanborough Lakes in Welwyn Gdn City. A group of foreigners netting across the river Lee. They were using an old net curtain & sea landing net, - pulling out and keeping all the chub over about a pound - upto 5 or 6 lb. They had a few bags. Over 70 fish. I pulled them about it - but got the old "we no speaky english" treatment. There were 4 of them. They didn't appear to be worried about me & the dog. Close by is the Police Call Centre. I called them up & asked them to send officers - & explained that theft was taking place. It took an hour and a half for 2 coppers to turn up. During that time the foreigners that had be raping the river & our country of its natural resources had walked past me with 4 bulging bags. The coppers weren't interested & told me to call the environment agency, & soon left. I called the environment agency - but no-one answered my call. Message to Johnny foreigner: IF YOUR GOING TO COME TO MY COUNTRY - FOLLOW ITS RULES. YOUVE RAPED YOUR HOMELAND. DONT RAPE MINE !. IF YOU CANT ABIDE BY THE RULES - THEN F#(K OFF BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM. STOP THEIVING MY COUNTRYS NATURAL RESOURCES. PARASITES !.

Stanborough lakes. I grew up fishing there as I used to live in wheathampstead. Shame about these cnuts removing fish for the pot. I imagine it's going to get a lot worse because we are allowing illegal migrants to flood our country daily and they don't give one hoot about our laws. The only time I ever saw anyone poaching, ironically was also in Welwyn garden city and it was at Howell Hyde when it used to be a day ticket. Some guy turned up with sea fishing gear and one of those ledgers with the spikes sticking out of it. We wondered what he was doing and I guess someone called the baliff because a few guys came down and told him to f-off, luckily before he caught anything. He looked Romanian and did the usual "can't speak English" defence.

Small world. Stanborough lakes is my local and I fished the river all last year and saw some shady stuff, luckily the bailiff was there to shout at them. There was a group of maybe 6-7, crate of Stella, 4ft pink spinning rods, casting into snags and fishing floats miles over depth, everything was a death trap for fish. Wish they'd fu*k off.

It's been a few years since me and a mate had an East European come along the canal at Brownhills to show us his catch. He had about 10 or 12 bream, 2 - 4lb each, in a keepnet that was all of four feet long. He said he was taking them away but we told him he couldn't take them and that his net was illegal. We mentioned the police and persuaded him to return the fish and leave. Couldn't do anything else. Bad news? We only caught three between us.

@OlgasBritishFells I've no doubt there are, however, there's also a hell of a lot that don't. Ask the thousands of child victims of the grooming gangs that were up and down the country. If you cannot guarantee the safety of the natives, you shouldn't be importing potentially dangerous people into the country, no matter how small the risk. Your experience is anecdotal. A few "good eggs" isn't a reason to run the risk for others. Not to mention the strain that our services and housing are already under. Paying their way or not, the waiting lists aren't getting shorter. The native population should be the priority.

The baliff is elderly and too afraid to confront them. This has been happening for decades, once on the stretch at Mitton between the Hodder and Calder, the lambs started making a noise i had never heard before, and stopped leaping one after another from the meadow to the river bank, way back then we could never envisage the carnage we see now, but a van full of thieves came and took a lamb, this was a precursor to the present, where arriving in the promised land gives them the right to decimate fish stocks , whilst we pay through the nose for a none existent governing body who couldn't tell piss from custard,

Should be a jail offence, uk coarse fishing is getting ruined by foreigners who know full well what they are doing. "No carp in there now, foreigners have taken them".. "oh you wont get a barbel in there foreigners have had em"... "hardly any zander left now, all been eaten by foreigners"... how many times do we have to hear this? I pay for a rod license and a wandering permit, and private memberships...for what?? Nobody does anything

Same the world over mate. Here in Australia we have the same problem with certain types of people setting night lines and using illegal nets. And of course if you say something you get the old no speak English BS. So these days I just take photos and video then call fisheries. They're pretty hot on that sort of stuff here. We have size and bag limits here which these people totally ignore too.

I'm a carp Angler and if I'd of seen them I'd of filled them both in. Fair play for approaching them, bad enough the Eastern Europeans fishing for spawning carp let alone foul hooking barbel. Where's the water bailiffs when you need them? Oww I forgot they only come out on Easter weekends ready to pounce on people fishing illegally without a licence.
