Instead these tutorials will focus on the 737NG as an aircraft and the particularities of how to operate it.

Absolute love your detailed tutorials. PDMG's 737 is truly a nice addon, and without these video's I'd still be flying it VFR by hand ✈😅

Looking forward to adding the 737 in A Pilots Life. Still building up funds to get the license. So flying the a320 a lot right now. Just completed my 28th flight today. Another 25 or so and I should have enough to buy the 737 family and pickup some flights. Great add on software though.

Great job you’re doing. 👍 For me, in reality, in the case of an engine failure in a twin, I would not choose an airport significantly further away because ‘my company has facilities available to do the maintenance’. If a nearer airport is likely to have equivalent facilities to fix it, then I would have landed there. If my decision resulted in tea and biscuits meeting with the Chief Pilot ( without tea or biscuits🥴) then so be it. I’m long since retired, and sometimes behave very very recklessly in MSFS! 🤣

Of course it's depending on the failure, but if you simply had an engine flameout and the restart didn't work, why would you not fly to a better location for the company? The plane flies fine on a single engine, so why not go where it's best? Of course I'm talking about airports within a reasonable distance, not like the Smartwings incident where they flew all the way from Samos to Prague on a single engine.

Well, your thinking may now be aligned with most modern chief pilots, but I suspect that the thinking has changed over the years. You may have had a ‘simple’ flame out, (if such a thing is possible 🤔), but the fact is you are now reliant upon the remaining engine, the reason why is irrelevant imo. Which is then safer? Landing at an (suitable) airport 120 miles away or one 320 miles away when single engine? The chance of a second failure may be small, but look at how they tried to blame Scully for landing on the Hudson instead of trying for an airport - what would happen to you if the other engine failed at 200 miles? I wouldn’t put my licence ( or my passengers) at risk simply to save the company a few quid. To me it’s about safety, and I’d bet the prosecuting lawyers would suddenly agree. It’s a small risk, I agree, but the risk/reward is not worth it imo. Though extremely rare, multiple engine failures can occur. I’d take the day an engine failed in a jet with an airport nearby as good news, and land there without tempting fate any further. If you’re flying ETOPS different law applies and you may have no choice, the same as when an engine fails and the nearest airport is 390 miles away. The chances are that you’d be fine flying further, but that pesky Murphy’s always around, looking to cause problems! Ymmv. I wrote a book called ‘Choices’, they’re interesting. 😊

Very interesting video! Thanks for sharing the information. I have a question for a particular case, lets say you have a medical emergency requiring a diversion, but it would result in an overweight landing, would one land overweight, or hold to burn off fuel? Is this company specific, or up to the captain to choose?

  • @A330Driver

You'd land overweight, if you need to divert because of a passengers illness, then it's usually time critical. In that case I don't care about the plane and the inspection needed afterwards. Usually nothing will happen anyway.

Hi Immanuel, great video as always. Yesterday I had a near disaster with a flight diversion. I flew a route from Sydney to Auckland in the BBJ1. I should have checked the weather more closely as when I arrived in Auckland there was a 50kt crosswind and practically zero visibility! I decided to divert whilst at 1500ft on approach, so climbed out and tried to set my alternate which was Christchurch. I had the reserve fuel on board as per sim-brief, but when I entered the new destination the FMC told me “insufficient fuel”. I selected Wellington as a closer alternative and got the same message. I knew this was false and proceeded there and landed with plenty remaining. The FMC kept telling me my eta was an hour later than when I would actually get there and predicted zero fuel. Any ideas what I did wrong? The route worked no problem and I landed safely. Interestingly I couldn’t get rid of Auckland as the first waypoint, but the active waypoint was Wellington.

Also if you are that low when you select the new destination, does the FMC compute a suggested cruise altitude to the alternate? I ended up guessing and using fl200 which worked ok, but knowing how to do this properly would be of interest.

  • @A330Driver

Hi, make sure you program a proper route into the FMC before checking the fuel status. Also make sure you climb to the optimum altitude for the diversion from your flight plan. Go too high or too low and fuel burn will probably be quite a bit more. Also be sure to adjust the reserve fuel on the PERF INIT page since otherwise the FMC will still issue the message based on the FIN RES+ALTN fuel that you've entered from your flight plan.

@@A330Driver Hi Emmanuel! how do you calculate an optimum cruise level if you divert to another airport that is not included into the OFP? Also, how do you make the reserve fuel adjustment acording to the airport that you are going to divert?
