Plup may legitimately be the best Melee player in the world

From Canada, to the UK, to practically everywhere in between, the Summer of Smash had delivered on a myriad of rip-roaring events from all over the world. Thankfully, no arms were broken in this year's iteration, but Riptide 2023 still brought to the table a wide array of stalwart North American talent like lloD, KoDoRiN, Aklo, aMSa and moky. It also boasted the inclusion of some of Melee’s most elusive marquee names in Wizzrobe and Plup. And with Zain opting to drop from the event, the time has finally come for a player other than Zain, Cody Schwab, Jmook or Leffen to take to the throne in 2023. I’m turndownforwalt, and here are the top five performances from Riptide 2023 in this week's JV5.

Ghatzu is legendary. Spark used to kick everyone’s butt at the local, and he’s so cool that he’d tell us exactly why we were losing, but the local smashers hated him for it 😂
I love the kingdom hearts sound effects for the transitions,,, that series is very closely connected to smash since sakurai worked very closesly with the team behind it
Ben beating zuppy 3-1 is such a sad loss against axe 😔 4:45 😂

Legend say Axe was so clean, he shocked the official tourney bracket display, by taking it to FoD into a different set.

When he is tapped in, plup can compete and win against anyone. Leffen has that same ability; just depends when they are hot. Zain is the current number 1 because he consistently plays at or near the top level

The editing was a bit confusing at times. Around 5:25 you first talk about a Sheik, then about a run ending, but while showing a Peach losing against a Sheik. Idk most of the names yet so I couldn't quite follow there. Otherwise great video! Subscribed :)
my favorite tournaments are ones where Plup and Wizzrobe look a level above the competition and have a great grands set.

I've been saying this all year. Plup is top five but he's probably top three ahead of Jmook and Leffen. If he attended more, he'd be having a better year than Zain did last year on consistency. Guy's so underrated

Both Leffen and Jmook have won events that were a lot more stacked than the two Plup has won. I would argue Plup is above Amsa right now, though. But low attendance is kind of iffy imo.

I wonder what it would take for plup to be recognized as the best sheik of all time, he can't be far behind m2k at this point and you could comfortably argue for him to be #1 oat rn

I have long been of the opinion that Plup has a good chance to beat literally anyone when he brings his A-game. I wish we saw it more often.

Hey Walt at 1:08 you put up a Justus tweet he posted about a Charity Tournament I ran for my Friend who Overdoses on Fentanyl and used it as an example of Justus's charity work. Justus does do alot of good charirty work but he didnt even attend the event the tweet is referring too and as someone who put alot of work into it right after my friend died Im a little upset that Justus is getting the credit for hosting my charity event.

So sad Wizzy did not win. I like Plup, but i would love to see him fighting the tip top of the Melee Elite. ´cause atm he just roasted wizzy 4 times in a row, and neither his win at Riptide nor CEO feel impressive considering in 2023 he only defeated aMSa and Hbox in the top 10 (+wizzy who is a sleepy giant, we all know that). Even the Falcon savior has beaten half of the top 10 with only 2 tournaments…

I like Plup but settle down
Plup is very good, and definitely underrated by the 2023 summer rankings (on purpose--they penalize low attendance). But #1 in the world? Based on this tournament? Nah. Guess who wasn't in attendance this tournament? #1 on the summer rankings (Zain). #2 on the summer rankings (Cody). #3 on the summer rankings (Jmook). #4 on the summer rankings (Leffen). #6 on the summer rankings (Mango). #8 on the summer rankings (Hungrybox). None of them were in attendance. Of the players in attendance, the one who probably could have beaten Plup (other than Wizzrobe) was Moky. (Moky 3-0'd Plup at Genesis). But Moky and Plup did not meet in the bracket this time. Plup IS good for sure, but I don't think this tournament is a sign of him being #1.
