Plumbing a Fish Room

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video I talk about the plumbing setup I am creating for my fish room filtration system. This plumbing will connect 20 aquariums to one central sump which will filter my entire fish room.
Having the aquarium drain lines set up this way allows me to isolate any aquarium without disrupting the rest of the system. This in turn will allow me to use any aquarium as quarantine tanks, isolating sick fish or isolating fish that require different water parameters from the rest of my fish stock.
This is the third video in my fish room vlog, be sure to watch my previous videos to see how the journey has progressed over the last few months.

    Flexible Tubing instead of hard plumbing might be much easier.

    It would be easier yes. But with the amount of tanks I have and the flow rate from the return pumps, you need larger diameter plumbing to handle the amount of water draining back to the sump so the tanks don't start overflowing.

    Great looking set up and similar to what I am building. What is the flow rate of your pump?

    Cheers mate, I use 2 pumps, both can push 10,000L/h however I only need to run them at about 40%. 1 pump powers the top row of tanks. The other pump powers the middle and bottom row of tanks. Hope that helps you and good luck with your build.

    @@JasonsCichlids any problem with the water not flowing back to your sump fast enough

    No problem with that. It flows fine and thankfully has a lot of wiggle room for more/less flow.

    I like your work, what size of bulk heads do you use and pipes?

  • @JasonsCichlids

    @JasonsCichlids

    3 жыл бұрын

    Cheers for that. The bulk head size I used are 38mm. They connect to 33.4mm (OD outside diameter) drain lines (these are the vertical pipes). All these vertical drain lines on each level connect to a common horizontal drain line that runs to the sump. That long horizontal drain line is 60.2mm (OD). Hope that helps.

    Jason's Cichlids Thank you. I have a couple more questions. Did you end up having any leaks? If you would have had some show up how would you have fixed it without taking the PVC apart? Silicon around the connection? How do you handle water changes? I’m setting up my fish room and like you trying to measure twice, cut once and make sure I’m fully prepared. I like your setup better than others I’ve seen.

    Yeah leaks are pretty much inevitable with so many joins. For leaks I suggest using a product like PC Marine Epoxy Putty (Google that) as I don't think silicon will adhere to PVC. Water changes are simple, just cut the flow to the tanks you want to drain, if I don't have much time I just drain water from 1 or 2 aquariums. Close off the return lines to those tanks, drain and refill. Open those return valves back up and all the water in all the aquariums in the system will dilute. Cheers mate, glad you like it!

    Did you say the sump is the bottom corner tank? How did you get the other tanks on the bottom to drain into it?

  • @JasonsCichlids

    @JasonsCichlids

    It took a bit of thought but those two 4 foot tanks sit 20cm higher than the sump. Unlike the two higher rows of aquariums which drain into the sump by going over the top of the sump. The two 4 footers drain into a shared bulkhead at the back of the sump. And that bulkhead sits 30cm lower than the tops of those two 4 footers. They are the only tanks that drain into the bulkhead at the back of the sump. Hope that makes sense mate.

    Hi, mate. Have you had any problem without a small air intake for the overflows? Awesome looking setup btw

  • @JasonsCichlids

    Hey there, no I don't. The actual drain lines that run down to the common horizonal drain line manifold aren't actually airtight. They kinda just sit inside the horizontal drain line and the water drains to the sump. So I guess that helps

    @@JasonsCichlids nice. Thanks for that. I've just built a similar rack with 4 tsnks and used your plumbing as inspiration! Unfortunately the stand builder provided me a poor frame and its bowing in the middle so I'm unable to get started yet.
