Hi all, after months of procrastinating and a lot of you guys asking I have finally set up an Instagram page! You can find it here: instagram.com/jasonscichlids
This is the best video I have ever seen. You covered all my questions and then you add a very powerful advice on spread of virus between aquariums. Thank you again

Thanks for that, gad you enjoyed the video and found it useful!
Well explained and demonstrated, it’s appreciated as a sump system connected to and filtering all these tanks, can be daunting. 👍
Thanks for this video mate! As always very thorough and informative. 👍👍👍

This is one of the best vids out there. Really good explanation and easy to understand. Great fishroom too! (little jealous here 😉) I don't get why you only have +-800 sups because you earn way more then that! Thanks for you're time and afford! Greets from the Netherlands!

I made this video based on your suggestion! So I am glad you found it helpful mate. Thanks for the kind words too mate, much appreciated. Greetings from Sydney!
That’s a nice system, in my fishroom I use hang on the back filters on them, of course I at the moment have only 6 aquariums Set up. More tanks are coming🙂 top notch and very detailed video my friend well done!.

Thanks mate, was a lot of work to set up! Yeah maybe set something up with a sump once you get more tanks. Although it is easier to do with a new set up so you can drill the tanks, etc. But thanks again mate!
Nice upload, Jason! 👍

I'm sold, running a sump system on 20 tanks seams like the logical way to go. I would loose my enthusiasm for the hobby very fast if I had to change water in 20 tanks every week too. I would have never thought of setting up the internals of the sump the way you did, "it's genius"😲. As I mentioned in other comments I just restored a 150gal, but I went "very large" canister filter this time. Mainly because I can remove the filter from under the tank for maintenance and make less mess in my dinning room. I can "watch" somebody cleaning sump sponges and make a mess of myself, plus everything around me. I finally subscribed on Instagram (not a fan of Facebook or associated products) and sent you photos of my system with tedious and redundant comments on Instagram messenger.

Glad you like the sump design Tommy. Kind of like you said, I personally get lazy when it comes to water changes. I know that if I had to change water from each tank individually that I wouldn't do it for long, then the fish would suffer. Cheers for following me on Instagram. I haven't been on there in a while but will post some new stuff soon.
Thanks for the tips ❤👍👍👍👍

Glad you like it Craig. Nice and simple with sponge filters mate and a lot cheaper to set up that's for sure! With my sort of set up you definitely need ball values on the return lines so you can quarantine new fish. Or if you wanted to run different water parameters on a certain tank to the rest of the system. Just lower the water level below the bulk head and you're set. Cheers mate

Hi! Loved this video, I’m building my first sump so this was very timely. What hydroponic beads do you use? I wasn’t sure what would be fish safe.

Thanks mate, glad you found the video helpful! If you search for "Whites stone fired clay pebbles" you will see the product I used. Part of the bag is green with an orange label. Just ensure the product you buy specifically states that it is suitable for use for Aquaponics. If it only states it is for Hydroponics I would give it a miss.
Do you have a video that show the return plumbing?
Can you please do a video on the plumbing of this system ? Overflows and inlets of the tanks . Thank you .

Thanks for the suggestion Zivan, I will look at doing a very detailed series of videos on it. For the time being, please see my Plumbing playlist that I done when I was building the fish room. They aren't amazing videos, but hopefully they give you some insight into what's involved. kzread.info/head/PLTPNViTff4qhRD4afr0AfzkGXzeTMYZNT
Hi Jason - really useful content. How many litres of aquarium water does your sump filter and how many litres is your sump. Im trying to understand ratios as I’ve read 20% but for a big system (like yours) the sump didn’t look that proportion?
@JasonsCichlids
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris, cheers for that mate. I honestly didn't take the ratio into account. But with some quick calculations I did, the tanks hold around 2,500 litres. While the sump, at its current water depth holds about 500 litres. Which just happens to be 20% the water volume. But I don't think you should get too caught up in the ratio as much. The amount of surface area in your biological filter media is more important. I used 4 litres of Seachem Matrix in the second chamber (said to have a total surface area of around 700m2). Those 4 litres of Seachem Matrix only filled up that second chamber about 1 inch deep. So I filled the remaining 2 foot deep chamber with lavarock, Matrix is just too expensive to fill that chamber right up with it alone! Adding the Pothos plant also helps a little with nutrient export, but most of all, regular water changes are the most important thing to keep up. Hope that helps mate.
Awesome video! Answered so many questions I had! But I am still unclear how the water is taken up from each tank. Is it like an overflow built into each tank? Hope I am making sense.
@JasonsCichlids
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad you found it helpful! So each tank is drilled in the back and have bulkheads attached. So as the tanks fill up with water from the return pumps that sit in the sump, water spills over the bulkheads and back to the sump. I'll make a video about all that soon.

@@JasonsCichlids ahhh that makes sense! Will be watching for video! Thanks so much!
I want to start a balloon mollie and guppy breeding system. I am planning and constructing two separate systems and using one for medicated water for quarantine and the other for the fish that are out of quarantine.
Just wondering how did you make your sump not to overflow during power interruption? Do you have video how did you make it along with your tanks? Thanks

What is the lowest parts of your Biofilter chamber? it looks like sand to me. also the bead stuff you have in the top layer. what brand did you end up using? trying to build a sump with your design here.
@JasonsCichlids
4 ай бұрын
That was a layer of Seachem Matrix. I initially intended to fill that whole chamber up with the stuff but it is just far too expensive. It was sitting on a bed of filter floss to prevent it from falling through the egg crate.

@@JasonsCichlids Thank you so Much! Helps me a lot knowing what is holding your bio rocks from the bottom.
How are you getting to return pumps to return to so many tanks , you show the overflow very well , but can you show how the return works please.

So will you run a UV light eventually in order to prevent diseases?
@JasonsCichlids

Hi Nate, yes I will eventually run one. Got a bit more research to do before I pull the trigger on that though.
Can u please do a video on how to do the plumbing from and into the tank thank you 😀
@JasonsCichlids
2 жыл бұрын
Great idea. I will certainly make a video on that topic for you in the coming weeks. Cheers for the suggestion mate!
How do you ensure the return to the tanks doesnt favor one tank or the other?
@JasonsCichlids
2 жыл бұрын
As long as the flow is less than the bulkhead can handle, the tanks will reach an equilibrium. I explain this in detail next weeks video
Can you do a water change from the sump? Take/add new water from that instead of one of the tanks.
@JasonsCichlids
4 ай бұрын
I could but because I don't have it drilled for a drain it would be tedious. If I did I could fill up the aquariums and just let the water overflow out the drain in the sump. However, I don't really like this method as you do lose some new water as well.
Also I have neolamprologus multifasciatus is there any other shellies I can put in with them or should I leave it as species only
@JasonsCichlids
3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't put them with other shellies. Best to keep one species of shell dweller per tank. You can have other types of cichlids with shellies in the one tank though, like Cyprichromis, Julidochromis, etc.

Interesting I use a woollen filter sock filled with filter floss and wash it every few days and I stuffed moss into my second chamber also I run a chiller into the sump to save money on air con ,otherwise it’s similar
@JasonsCichlids
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, I actually forgot about filter socks. I think I might try them actually because it will mean the sponges would stay cleaner for longer and not block up as frequently. Thanks for the suggestion! Oh you run a chiller do you? I used to have one on my old reef aquarium.
@OrcHead

@@JasonsCichlids Yeah filter sock woolen is good and I just throw it in the washing machine for a 30 min cycle (No soap) 1 or twice a week.You might want to test if a water chiller is cheaper power with your setup could save you some nice $$

@@JasonsCichlids I think if you get a decent filter sock you wont have stack so many sponges,I'd replace some of them with some bags of filter floss and you can toss them in the washing machine as well :)

Couldn’t you use just clean tap if you add a water conditioner to clean your sponges maybe after you do a few in the aquarium water to make them extra clean?
@JasonsCichlids
3 жыл бұрын
Yes you could use that. If you're quick enough you can simply use tap water alone to clean the sponges without getting much beneficial bacteria die off
@kasperkjrsgaard1447

Here in Denmark the tapwater is totally clorine free, so obviously i just clean the sponges and additional filtermaterial in temperated tap water. It makes it a lot more easy.
Do you think this is feasible scaled down to smaller tanks :D

@@ArtyMars I think stuff like this will help your bank tbh. It'll save you money on multiple heaters, filters, more frequent water changes, water spillage during changes, stressing fish etc. Bulkheads and pvc are cheap. Have some fun, build something
what type of plant is that
@JasonsCichlids
3 жыл бұрын
The plant is Pothos also known as Devil's Ivy. Just be careful with it if you have a cat or dog as the plant is said to be harmful if they ingest it.
I kinda need to see the plumbing.
You kept speaking of loosing your A/C and needing heaters working. This makes no since. I assume you mean if your temperature gets low and you can not run heat in the room and the water gets colder. Then you would be dependent on your aquarium heaters.
@JasonsCichlids
4 ай бұрын
If the air conditioner dies, I have the heaters as redundancy to keep the tanks warm while I repair/replace the air con.
The water in the second chamber supposed to be lower too.. Think the media in the second chamber is also choking up.

@edwin_cho

Ya, can put alot but not too tight that water can't flow.. the water lever is suppose to be on the fourth baffle till it flow over to second compartment.
@JasonsCichlids
4 ай бұрын
Yes correct, it was meant to be lower in the second chamber. I found the pothos plant caused this and have since removed it. It took a full day to clean that second chamber out (which restarted a cycle). All the plant matter choked up the lava rock. Without it the water flows freely through the media.
Get some some filter socks or auto filter roll. Would be much easier

Couldn't you just use tap water that has been treated with Tank Start Dechlorinator?
@JasonsCichlids
2 жыл бұрын
I think that could be a waste of dechlorinator. If you're quick enough, I don't think there would be much die off in the filter sponge just using tap water
I do so wish people would properly say aquaria rather than aquariums. Aquaria is such an elegant word. Aquariums is for tongue swallowers.
