Plotting a better life in Ugandan slums
Ғылым және технология
This film explores how Uganda’s National Slum Dwellers Federation (NSDF) is working with local NGO ACTogether to mobilise slum communities in Kampala. It focuses on the informal settlement of Kibuye, one of Kampala’s 63 slums, capturing everyday life and documenting how technology is helping the community participate in decisions that affect their quality of life.
Historically, the Kampala Capital City Authority has had little information about the make-up of the city’s slums - and what it did have was outdated. ACTogether and the NSDF have engaged the residents of the slums, helping them to map their own neighbourhoods, and detailing both the demographics and the locations of physical structures such as toilets.
ACTogether set up forums in which residents and other stakeholders, including city authority officials, use the knowledge gained from mapping to discuss issues affecting the community, empowering residents to start taking control of life within the slums.
ACTogether is also keen to increase the involvement of academics in the slums’ future planning. It
initiated the “Urban Studio” project a partnership with Makerere University in which students spent time interacting with residents and learning first-hand about life in the slums - something that was missing from their academic courses.

If only the government moved these innocent people to a activated neighborhood for better life..they need to do that first? Then rebuild the slum for another new neighborhood for all ugandan people? ? But having the wrong leader has a government this problem will never change....

Infrastructure is needed to build infrastructure. In order to sustain the construction of houses and new neighborhoods at a speed higher than the number of new people being born or arriving in these cities, an infrastructure that was previously solid is needed. You need a strong contracting sector and a large working population. If not, the state is limited to supporting only one project at a time, hopefully maybe two. The most realistic solution is to implant infrastructure on the informal constructions. It is to bring formality to these areas. Yes, moving some people to make room for the construction of a more bearable infrastructure. For example ... As they are doing there, mapping the area is the first step. Then it is to determine the quality of the soil. Then, the government, using the same community citizens as labor force and thus giving them a source of income even higher than their jobs at the time. Tear down selected houses where new streets must be built, and underneath, such as sewers and drinking water pipes. Then electricity. That is the main trio of problems that an area can maintain, so immersed in precariousness, if you arrange mobility (streets and public transport); water and electricity, then you can create better economic plans to make the area grow and develop better quality homes. But I faithfully believe what the video says. The community must be involved, in the decision of, which families will be taken out of the slum to tear down their houses (Decide who will receive a social home from the state. Knowing that not all will be able to) and be the workforce in the following "formalization projects " of the community.
You are doing a very good job
Wonderful!
Always for you 🙏🏻

Where are you?
If the rich African people could donate some of their wealth to rebuild the slum areas, provide decent housing, clean water, latrines, electricity, proper roads and paths, so much suffering could be avoided. No human being should live as they do. Western, rich countries are reluctant to provide aid because rich Africans take it and it usually doesn't reach the poor. Corruption must end if change is to happen.

How?
The government should consider low cost building like condominium societies for these locals to do away with slums. Condominiums would use less space for construction for many people and yet they would stay in a better environment.

All people in slums need to be moved out of the city into planned neighborhoods - and slum areas re-planned to be part of the city. You cannot manage the slums (putting drainage etc.) it is just a problem that needs to be gotten rid of

I wish we had some smart city planners, the only way to clean this is by building projects then move these people to the projects then clear these houses, so simple 🤷🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️ that’s why other countries are doing and the people like it since no one lose nothing and they find all the services where they move it like clean water and a safer place.
Life is beautiful but really short. Don't waste your time. Live your life purposefully. Prepare for the day of the reckoning/judgement.

An idiot spotted.
Governments like these take from the poor to give to the rich. Look at Rwanda. In true Rwandan style, Kagame had the slums bulldozed sending people scrambling for somewhere to live. People with small children, handicapped people, old people...all were sent out into the streets. Why? Because there was a Commonwealth meeting in Kigali and Kagame didn't want them seeing the terrible poverty in those slums. What happened to those homeless people? They were arrested for being vagrants. And we all know what happens in Rwandan jails? Murder! The West would be better prepared to help these poor countries but the corruption from on high stops prevents this.

This is world wide, and GREED is the reason. Give the people $2K per month retro from Jan. 2020! Teach them to work online from home, so they can earn an income. Decent people want to work, and not have everything going up, when we have nothing.
First of all you need to elect a government who adresses the needs of the people not only their own needs, than you must invest in the lives of the people and infrastructure outside the cities and take away the reasons for them to come to the city in the first place. If you not follow that path you end up in a devils circle, in wich you can only manage the slums and will need to improve them, time and time again, wich than only attract more people to them. That will only be a very temporary solution, with the end effect of making the problem bigger and bigger to a point were even managing them, becomes impossible. Its nobel from NGO's to try to tackle the problem and noble from universities to lay a hand on, but it is a problem wich can, at the end of the day, only be solved by a government
Gosh its filthy
