Here is a helful copypasta that I found in youtube comments (spoilers free) So in order to avoid any confusion regarding the time travel mechanics, I will break down what type of Time travel we're dealing with here. AOT operates by a particular type of time travel where it's almost impossible to change the past even if you somehow go back in time. And any change that you tried to cause was always meant to happen in the overall timeline. Here time is a fixed circle, not a stream. We may see Eren meddle in the past but that was always meant to happen. The Attack Titan's ability is to receive the memories of its future inheritors. This was hinted when Kruger mentioned Mikasa and Armin towards the end of S3. Keep in mind, they can only view these memories but can't interact with them. So how was Eren able to meddle in the past? Well, he had 3 perfect conditions: 1. He had the ability of the Attack Titan 2. The ability of the Founding Titan 3. He was also in contact with someone with royal blood AKA Zeke. After Zeke tapped Eren's head, they were able to view Grisha's past memories with Eren using the power of the coordinate. They were freely able to view the past as if it were through a one way mirror. Now if Eren had any other Titan other than the Attack Titan, he would only be able to look. But since Attack Titan can see forward in time, Grisha can use this to see Eren's recollection of the same event that he's currently experiencing in real time. So this mean that whenever Grisha can see or hear Eren, he's actually recieving a brief future memory from Eren's POV where he can see out of his eyes and hear his words. That means he is seeing himself from a 3rd perspective. Then if he responds, his response is simply part of the memory that Eren/Zeke are viewing, allowing for a two way communication through time. Also Note that everytime, Grisha sees Zeke, Eren is always standing behind his dad. So whenever Grisha sees Zeke, it is actually due to the memories from Eren's POV Another thing to add: Eren did NOT see everything in the future. Eren only saw CRUCIAL moments in the future, for example, he saw Pieck pointing a gun at him when he kissed Historia's hand 4 years ago, this is why he was so calm when she threatened to shoot him, because Eren KNEW she wouldn't shoot him. However, Eren DIDN'T know that Porco was going to try to eat him just a couple of minutes later. Even Eren doesn't know EVERYTHING that will happen. its actually the truth though, the person who was actually being brainwashed was eren himself. Eren didnt know any of this was gonna go down until ending of season 3 where he sees the vision of what happens here after kissing Historias hand. Thats why at the ending of season 3, hes so lost and broken and asks himself and his future self "will we really be free". His Future self setup the events so that (S1-S3)Eren could be hailed as the savior in paradis, but in the end he was lied to, as he sees he was the true villain this whole time.

So when ever grisha tried to see Erens memories, Eren would only show him what he wanted him to see. WHICH MEANS, that Eren manipulated his dad to only show himself (Eren) what he wanted himself to see. Until Eren was able to unluck them all when he kissed Historia's hand. So basicly Eren didnt only manipulate his dad, he also manipulated his younger self. Im a manga reader. Even for me it was a mindfuck, had to watch a video about it to understand it. Edit: Btw every titan holder can see its previous users memories. BUT! only the attack titan can see its future holders memories.

@@niqow8920 How do you explain that Grisha is able to make eye contact with Zeke and hug him? This is not something the attack titan can do but something the Founding titan is able to do. Sort of like time travel BUT not exactly since Eren and Zeke didn’t go into the actual past but went there using the memories. But the part where Grisha hug zeke is the weirdest part because the Attack Titan cannot do this at all.

This episode is proff that Eren controled Isayama to write attack on titan.

this is one of those moments that, in the manga, I understood everything that it was trying to tell me but I didn't fully feel the emotion that I should have gotten (mainly the fear from Grisha). this episode in the anime has absolutely changed that. I really felt those feelings in this episode and I definitely think the music somewhat helps with that. even though I know what happens from this point on (not gonna spoil anything), this episode made me scared of Eren. some of the lines in this episode really make Eren sound terrifying and I honestly love it

06:43 In the first episode of the anime adaptation, Grisha's face wasn't shown when he talked to Eren about the key. In the first chapter of the manga, Grisha's looking at an odd direction. In other word, yes this is indicating that Grisha was talking to the future Eren all this time.

That's why Kruger told the Grisha to protect Armin and Mikasa as Eren was already manipulating the previous Attack Titan wielders to make everything go his way.

(SPOILER FREE!) Fun fact: Grisha didn't see old Zeke and Eren through his perspective, instead he saw it all through Eren's perspective since Eren sent his memories back in time to Grisha via the Attack Titan. Notice how whenever Grisha sees Zeke, Zeke is within Eren's sight, so he saw it all in 3rd person view basically which means when he stared in Eren's eyes he actually saw himself. Must've trippy af for Grisha

At the beginning, I think Eren was being sarcastic when he told Zeke he was no longer brainwashed with a deadpan expression and no emotion in his voice, like he was really saying "this is completely pointless, nothing you show me is going to change my mind" also I had to laugh at "So Eren helped him in that moment", because it didn't look like Grisha felt very 'helped' lol

Eren pretty much told us what he is going to do, in the episode he says "before someone can take my freedom, I will take theirs" 0__0

@@dlg-flash7337 Pretty much any time he does "see" Zeke it's due to seeing him from Eren's POV so to Grisha he's seeing everything in a third person view so when Grisha hugs Zeke he's hugging the air but from Eren's POV he's hugging Zeke.

Eren is the ultimate attack Titan and he's the one who influenced all the past attack titan holders to fight for freedom and king's self righteousness. And attack titan never bowed to anyone that how funny Mikasa, Armin and the rest were accusing Eren of being controlled 😂😂 but Eren is the one controlling others. It's the reason the shows actual name is "Shingeki no kyojin" that is the attack titan.

I will take their freedom before they take mine, that's the ultimate boss line,

6:45 they didnt add it in the first episode of the anime but in the manga, we see that grisha actually looking somewhere away while holding the key. But only now we see that he was actually looking at eren. About how, attack titan can get glimpses of memories from its future inheritors which in this case is eren. When he looks towards eren he doesnt actually see eren standing in front of him, he sees himself from erens point of view because eren watching this is now a memory of eren and grisha sees that memory. Basically when grisha sees himself he looks and tries to understand what is going on, just like when he woke up and saw zeke for the first time. He then looks around again to comprehend the situation, that is he dreaming or is he seeing a memory of future. Notice that whenever grisha sees zeke and talks to him, eren is right behind grisha and sees zeke clearly also giving grisha a good view. Because grisha is seeing the memories of the present eren in the past. If eren were to stay beside zeke all the time and didnt put zeke in his POV grisha would never be able to see zeke and talk to him. And about hugging, these are just memories so even though thougths can be shared thanks to the attack titans ability physical touch should not be possible except if its eren touching grisha because he sees erens memories so he would feel his touch if he were to see the memory of that moment which happened in the episode already(when eren tells him to avenge others, he touches his shoulder.) So i think grisha hugging zeke is something isayama did to make it feel more dramatic(i dont know if that is the word im looking for) or maybe i missed something and there is actually an explanation of how he hugs zeke. PS. These are just what i understood of the entire time travel thing in the episode, i may have missed something or said something not correct. Feel free to correct me please.

seeing the future its just saying that he can saw future attack titan shifter memories. but this can be blocked if the future used doesn´t want them to see them. He can also can interact with this memories in influencing the user with previous shifters, because they are all connected to paths, a realm where time its just another coordinate from the world.

Time loop, best way to pretty much describe it. The only thing I wish was different in anime is them showing Grisha's whole body and him looking away in episode one, so it would correlate better in this episode. In the manga you actually see grisha, even tho its not drawn yet, looking at something else (future eren).

I feel like people tend to overexplain the whole future memories thing so here’s my short and quick synopsis: The Attack Titan can’t just willy nilly see all of what the future holds. The way it works is that future inheritors are able to send their memories to the past inheritors. So Eren can pick and choose which memories he sends and when Grisha will get them. As others have explained, Grisha doesn’t actually see future Eren and Zeke in these memories from the past. What he’s seeing is the memories of present Eren witnessing Grisha’s past. It’s like he was seeing the POV of Eren witnessing these memories, all while the events were happening in real time for Grisha. Eren chose to send these specific memories back and put his whole plan in motion. Also, just as an extra thinking point: It would be reasonable to think that Eren does know how the future will pan out. All he would have to do is send specific memories back to Grisha, and then he would eventually inherit those memories himself since he is already able to tap into Grisha’s memories. I think all of this happened when Eren kissed Historia’s hand in season 3. I think at that point he tapped into Grisha’s memories, which contained the memories of what happens in the future (sent by future Eren)

Since Eren is looking at Grisha's memories, Grisha gets Erens memories of going through Grisha's memories. There was no Time Travel, Grisha knew Eren and Zeke were there because he has Erens memories of being there. Pretty much allowing them to interact. That's why Grisha sees Zeke only when Zeke is in Eren's line-of-sight. When he Kissed Historia's hand, he got all of Grisha's memories so then saw his future self in Grisha's memories. That's why he has not been shocked by these memories or his ability to speak with his father, as he had seen them before. He totally changed after that moment with Historia and knows what he will one day do. That's why he is so depressed at the ocean afterward (still season 3). Genius.

Remember in season 3 when eren kissed historia's hand at the award ceremony and a little shock happened and Eren looked shocked and disturbed? And how different he has acted since then? This episode shows parts of it too, the hamd grab, the kiss, and the shocked face. Eren only saw these future memories when he kissed her hand. Sure he had seen future memories before, but they were vague. Touching someone with royal eldian blood triggered a clearer look, and touching a titan with royal blood while also possessing the coordinate allowed him to have far more control and clarity in what he was seeing and what future/past memories other attack titans in those memories could see

the past is set. it cant be changed, so no matter what happened when Grisha met the founder, he was going to do it, its just that the way it was actually done was Grisha saw Eren's memory in present day (i.e. this episode) saying the things he said - basically Grisha is seeing the future in this episode, but Eren is only showing him what he needs to get what EREN wants to occur - Grisha isnt able to see all of Eren's memories (because the titan holder decides what to reveal - ultimate freedom to decide their own fate) - all the memories are Eren's, so only when Eren looks at Zeke does Grisha see Zeke. I believe those few cases were to convince Zeke that he holds no power, a bit of the "see, i told you this was pointless...I even tried conceding before we got to this point so you wouldnt have to find this truth out."

He saw everything he so depressed and disgusted what he saw in the future cause he saw himself destroy the world. Future has been decided.

There’s a point in the series when Eren unlocked the Attack Titan’s true power and it’s hinted at in this episode. Eren wasn’t born like this, but this specific moment changed him and we already saw it.

In 2:35 he was just being sarcastic bout zeke that's what happen in the book.

1) Eren and Zeke view Grisha's past memories via paths 2) Eren talked Grisha into doing it. 3) Because of that, that future instance (memory) was sent back to Grisha 4) Grisha saw that future memory (of Eren seeing Grisha's past memories via paths) and it synchronized with the reality he was in. 5) Grisha was influenced to snatch the Founder, and kill the Reiss family. The Attack Titan's ability is to not see Future Memories, but to send Future Memories back to its past inheritors. This is why Grisha asked Eren "why won't you show me everything?!" 6) Grisha was able to see Zeke because Eren had brought Zeke along with him and also sent that future memory back. And when Grisha started remorsing and begged Zeke to stop Eren, Eren wanted no one to stop his plans and cut Zeke off from his memories.
