The overall theme of the song is our mistaken views of ourselves as being individual and isolated from the rest and how we actually are a tiny part of something greater. It speaks of clinging to life and not accepting death, cause we see death as an ending, not as another step of existence. When we die, our matter is decomposed and is transfered to things like worms that feed on us, to the atmosphere in the form of gas, and to the ground and plants that feed on him. We are always moving through the cicle of existence, there is no stillness, only movement and transformation. And as an example, these are the opening lines: "Life is a waterfall We're one in the river And one again after the fall"

I think the Aerials they're talking about are satellites. We use them to view to get information on the start, and we also use them to get watch other countries. We're so invested in watching others or for something else and we don't see how we're fucking up our country. And it's not just the US, but other countries do this too. We're worried about things that are far from us, and we don't look close enough to what's in our own backyard.

Many years back I was listening to the radio when Aerials by System of a Down started playing. These guys are social advocates and play really hard rock. I was blown away by the lyrics, please read them and enjoy the song. Life is a waterfall Were one in the river And one again after the fall Swimming through the void We hear the word We lose ourselves But we find it all.... Cause we are the ones that want to play Always want to go But you never want to stay And we are the ones that want to choose Always want to play But you never want to lose Aerials, in the sky When you lose small mind You free your life Life is a waterfall We drink from the river Then we turn around and put up our walls Swimming through the void We hear the word We lose ourselves But we find it all... Cause we are the ones that want to play Always want to go But you never want to stay And we are the ones that want to choose Always want to play But you never want to lose Aerials, in the sky When you lose small mind You free your life Aerials, so up high When you free your eyes eternal prize Aerials, in the sky When you lose small mind You free your life Aerials, so up high When you free your eyes eternal prize I did some research and Serg said he wrote it following his reading of Zen Mind - Beginners Mind. This is what the song actually means. Nirvana, the Waterfall, Shunryu Suzuki, Roshi “Our life and death are the same thing. When we realize this fact, we have no fear of death anymore, nor actual difficulty in life.” I went to Yosemite National Park, and I saw some huge waterfalls. The highest one there is one thousand three hundred forty feet high, and from it the water comes down like a curtain thrown from the top of the mountain. It does not seem to come down swiftly, as you might expect; it seems to come down very slowly because of the distance. And the water does not come down as one stream, but is separated into many tiny streams. From a distance it looks like a curtain. And I thought it must be a very difficult experience for each drop of water to come down from the top of such a high mountain. It takes time you know, a long time, for the water finally to reach the bottom of the waterfall. And it seems to me that our human life may be like this. We have many difficult experiences in our life. But at the same time, I thought, the water was not originally separated, but was one whole river. Only when it is separated does it have some difficulty in falling. It is as if the water does not have any feeling when it is one whole river. Only when separated in many drops can it begin to have or to express some feeling. When we see one whole river we do not feel the living activity of the water, but when we scoop a part of the water into a dipper, we experience some feeling of the water, and we also feel the value of the person who uses the water. Feeling ourselves and the water in this way, we cannot use it in just a material way. It is a living thing. Before we were born we had no feeling; we were one with the universe. This is sometimes called “mind-only,” or “essence of mind,” or “big mind.” After we are separated by birth from this oneness, as the water falling from the waterfall is separated by the wind and rocks, and then we have feeling. You have difficulty because you have feeling. You attach to the feeling you have without knowing just how this kind of feeling is created. When you do not realize that you are one with the river, or one with the universe, you have fear. Whether it is separated into drops or not, water is only water. Our life and death are the same thing. When we realize this fact we have no fear of death anymore, and we have no actual difficulty in our life. When the water returns to its original oneness with the river, it no longer has any individual feeling to it; it resumes its own nature, and finds perfect composure. How very glad the water must be to come back to the original river! If this is water it must come back to the original river! If this is so, what feeling will we have when we die? I think we are like the water in the dipper. We will have composure then, perfect composure. It may be too perfect for us, just now, because we are so much attached to our own feeling, to our own individual existence. For us, just now, we have some fear of death, but after we resume our true original nature, there is Nirvana. That is why we say, “To attain Nirvana is to pass away.” “To pass away” is not a very adequate expression. Perhaps “to pass on,” or “to go on,” or “to join” would be better. Will you try to find some better expression for death? When you find it, you will have quite a new interpretation of your life. It will be like my experience when I say the water in the big waterfall. Imagine! It was one thousand three hundred forty feet high! We say, “Everything comes to emptiness.” One whole river or one whole mind is emptiness. When we reach this understanding we find the true meaning of our life. When we reach this understanding we can see the beauty of human life. Before we realize this fact, everything that we see is just delusion. Sometimes we overestimated the beauty; sometimes we underestimate or ignore the beauty because our small mind is not in accord with reality. To talk about it this way is quite easy, but to have the actual feeling is not so easy. But by your practice of meditation you can cultivate this feeling. When you can sit with your whole body and mind, and with the oneness of your mind and body under the control of the universal mind, you can easily attain this kind of right understanding. Your everyday life will be renewed without being attached to an old erroneous interpretation of life. When you realize this fact, you will discover how meaningless your old interpretation was, and how much useless effort you had been making. You will find the true meaning of life, and even though you have difficulty falling upright from the top of the waterfall to the bottom of the mountain, you will enjoy your life.

When I listed to music as a teen I rarely understood the words. And when I did, I didn't spend anytime trying to understand them. On a conscious level it was because I'm lazy. Subconsciously it was the fact that I disagree philosophically with most musicians and didn't want the tension, again because I'm lazy (see first reason). I definitely never grasped what he was saying here. Honestly, I'm not entirely sure I get it now. By "one" does he mean just not divided by trivial cultural and political issues, or does he mean physically "one" like in the sense of being energy or something?

From a metal head Jedi to some padawans….. feel the music. Don’t worry about lyrics or videos, until listen number 20ish. This is the definition of a “paradox”, metal lyrics you can’t understand, what they are saying, but they are saying A LOT. While what I’ll politely call “other” music, you can understand what they’re saying …… but they ARE NOT SAYING ANYTHING!!!! Hence the term “pop” music. It comes, and then it goes. The first line of this song says it all. “Life is a waterfall: we’re one in the river, and we’re one again after the fall.” Which I take to imply that our consciousness as individuals is only during our short ‘life’ (the waterfall), so when we ‘lose small mind’ (our individual perspective: our individual thoughts, fears, worries, problems, etc… ) if we can let go of that and see we are all destined to be one with all humanity, all life, all the earth…. That’s out ‘eternal prize’. Selfishness is against the will of existence.!this song is very Zen.

What you have to remember is that sometimes the record company hires a director to do the video for a song and the director might (or might not) get the bands opinion on what the video should be like and the director might not know the deep meaning of a song and they have you chasing your tail trying to figure out what the video means and also what the lyrics mean. Dee Snider of Twisted Sister once went and testified in front of a Congressional Committee over lyrics in songs. They made up a list of the "Filthy Fifteen" songs and one of his songs was on it. They said his song was about sado masachism and he politely informed them that he wrote the song about his guitar players throat surgery. There is a video here on YT of it. Point is, sometimes you can chase the meaning of lyrics or video and forget to listen to the music.

Answering the question of when to listen to soad. There is no specific reason to do so. If I am in a bad mood, they cheer me up, if want to get more hyped, they deliver. If I lay in bed and need some good night music, they get me there as well as when I wake up in the morning and need to get awake properly. But not only soad. I can do this with all metal bands I listen to. I even stop listening to some bands, if I can not fall asleep to them. But that really takes something, since I can use slaughter to prevail or strapping young lad and similar music to fall asleep.
