3:12 He sacrificed... THE ROOOOOK
7:05 Nelson: The Bishop move to e8 after this is a blunder, but you neglected to mention that the bishop on h5 is trapped - it's not protected, no piece can get to protect it, and it can't move to g6, f7, g4, or f3 either. Bxe2 might be the best move for it.
This is a great idea for a series I think! I love the comeback wins, it shows perseverance pays off. Good job in the game btw - also great that we get to figure out what you played. Helps me learn
"Nobody ever won a game of chess by resigning." -- Savielly Tartakower
Rxh7 wasn't a blunder, it was the origin of the Nelson Gambit. Taking it with queen would have been the Botez gambit.
That's why people that don't resign to me win much more often against me... I always blunder, especially when time is low
Dont give up is kind of life advice tho 😂
I try not to resign because at my level, even up against two or more queens it may end in a stalemate. Plus once I had three pawns and my opponent had two queens and some other pieces and I promoted to a back rank mate because he wasn’t paying attention.

Beautiful game! Your opponent probably thought he had won and that's why he started making mistakes.

Just now, I played a 5 minute game, and it was literally +7 for my opponent, but then I made a rook sacrifice that was brilliant, and I suddenly just won all of his pieces! (Rapid: 1800, blitz: 1500)
Thank you. I was playing against a friend and was really down on form. In the third game, I offered to resign (again), but he told me to stick with it. I did, and I won.
5:40... Finally... i actually predicted your move
I never resign my games, well unless I literally see a mate in 2 or i have to go afk(or away from board rather). I am at crap elo, so people hang stalemates sometimes when in time trouble. Or even hang random mate in 2's.
Cool game. Reminds me of the one that sent you on tilt in a way. I wondered if this player was thinking to himself "Why doesn't this guy resign?" Congrats on the win.
New Challenge: beating Nelson, only premoving
looks like you CAN stop an avalanche with a horse
Nelson, if you need some challenges for upcoming videos, you can try this ones. First-Side Chess Rules: Any piece of the queenside can only stay and play the rest of the game in the queenside. Same goes for the kingside pieces. If you want a harder variant, you can divide the board even smaller and only 1/4th of the board can stay on the 1/4th side. Even harder can be 1/8th. Second- Paralysed Chess The board is divided into 2 sides. You have to move those pieces from the first side and then the next turn is the second side. Say your queen is in danger on the first side but now your turn is on the second side. So you cannot move your queen to safety but only when its the first side’s turn you can only move your queen. Harder variants can be dividing the board into 4 sides as (a,b is first, c,d is second and so on) Even harder is 8 sides. If you dont have a move when you are on a side then you immediately lose. Third- Forced Chess Every of your next move has to be premoved. You cannot change your desired next move after you premove it. Fourth: Parasite Chess Easy- King Medium- Queen Hard- Rook Super hard- Knight Insane- Bishop Impossible- Pawn After you chose your difficulty, everytime that piece moves in the game, one of your piece that you chose will stay as an enemy queen for the next 5 moves. Say you chose “medium”, and the queen moves on your opponent’s turn then you can chose which of your pieces can stay as a queen for the next 5 moves. After 5 moves that piece can become the piece of yours it used to be again. If you chose “medium” and a parasite queen moves then that doesnt mean you have to make another queen. Only if the original queen moves.
Instructive game - thanks! May I point out that if black blocks with the rook, rather than taking it, you can play Q to C8 leading yet another forced checkmate.
Fork...that was nice! That said, if you're down a queen (or more) with no prospects for survival, you can absolutely quit. But down a rook in the late opening or early middle game...sure...use that as an opportunity to work on building your resiliency bona fides. That is one of six core competencies everyone must have under their chess belt. And the only practical way to work on improving resiliency is when things go sideways in live play. Mentally acknowledge this as something you're 100% prepared to do in advance of any game. Then get your grind on.
if you blunder in an endgame you might as well resign lmao
Nesi sacrificed THHE ROOOK. ..
i lost a queen and all, but he forgot my rook ready for a mate

Bro, the fact that i resigned and just after that, this showed up 😅😅
Chess really does mirror real-life warfare. A single blunder can completely ruin all your progress and it is not over until it's over.
Interesting how the winning move for black was not to capture the bishop with either piece. They just had to sidestep to Kb8 and would have stayed winning.
9:41 I called this ChokeMate!
Nice, I don’t wanna resign now!
Never give up. Never surrender!
it is possible to win in time even if you down a lot of materials. In reality, some players choose passive moves even down a lot of materials when the opponent has time trouble. I always wish I have 20 seconds more in my games since more than 40% of my games end in a +55 eval bar but lose in time.
I once was completely losing on a game. My opponent had checkmate in 10 moves... then they blundered checkmate in 2 moves. For comparison, I only had my Rook, King (obviously) and 2 pawns. They had 2 Rooks & 4 pawns (one of which was a passed pawn & was 2 squares away from promoting) &, obviously, a King.
What a relatable chess video! I've done something similar with the Fried Liver where I got so obsessive trying to make it work that I trapped my own queen on H4 and lost it. I got really lucky and won the game with a pawn conversion. We each had only one pawn left and I beat him by one square. It was an exciting game, but I didn't feel like I earned - got lucky.
When you realize you blundered, just think you invented a new gambit.

For 8:44 I chose to queen sac cuz then nc7 is mate
4:30 at this point there was a mate in 2 (correct me if I'm wrong) Bishop for F6 and after that the only two moves only moves that prevent queen for D7 checkmate are: queen to C7 or D8; bishop to E6. That would be difficult to see, if you don't see it you'll focus on capturing the bishop with the pawn or moving away the rook that's threatened by the bishop

Hey Nelson, thanks for your very helpful videos. I just started playing a few months ago and I’m stuck at 650. What’s the difference between higher rated players like a 1500 vs 2500? Both understand basic fundamentals and have played a bunch of games for an extended period of time. How is the 2500 winning more than the 1500? Do they just know more sneaky tricks? Is that the gist of it since both are proficient in the basics of chess. Just trying to wrap my head around it.
@Crustee0

From what i understand, its less of "tricks" and simply better fundamentals. They are better at opening most of the time, and with experience their endgame calculation improves too. You see magnus winning in endgame and even if you dont understand what his moves intentions are, you can see most of the time he somehow wiggle into a win. That is no trick, its simply calculation and experience

Mate in 1
Imagine if you played against magnus carlsen and won him
Last week of the week before, I challenged the Malala bot. In the opening, I was in a bad position since I never really pay effort to study any opening theory, so after the opening phase I was in a very bad position (the Stockfish analysis after the game said that I was down 5 - 6 points), where the only lucky thing is that I have a passed pawn at the 7th rank, blocked by opponent's king. Then I noticed that my only rook and one of my bishops were both protecting my passed pawn, so I decided perhaps I can use the rook to do something. After my rook move, Malala bot moved her rook without any reason and offers my rook a free pawn. In my next move, I'm not sure why, but I suddenly paid much more attention to analyzing the board than any other moves I had played and successfully found that checking with my rook will force the king away. The king could only go to the side of my pawn, because the 8th rank is controlled by my rook and my pawn was protected by my bishop. Malala bot made another mistake to try to attack my rook, but I promoted the pawn to a queen which is 2 squares away from my rook, and they were protecting each other. The king was forced to move down. But then I missed a mate in 1 by checking with a bishop and allowed Malala bot to block with her bishop. Luckily, it still a mate in 1 and this time I caught it and won the game.
Looks like you managed to disorganise all of his pieces. This shall now be know as the Benoni-Dutch-Nelson gambit.
