This guy is at my locals. He’s really good, plays the latest tournament net deck, talks maximum shit the whole time, then after our tourney he goes to the next card shop for their locals. Our Yugioh guy at the shop is nice to him because he buys a case every time. I had never played him before but could always hear him peacocking across the room every weekend. Finally on Saturday we got matched up. After I lost to his danger tears we started flipping through each others trade binders and he’s like “give me your Magnamhuts (I had a play set), you don’t need them you’re literal trash at this game, it’s better off with me.” I got annoyed and said I’d trade him one for each of his ghost rare DMG because f* you. Then he told other people he’d give them cash if they traded me and got my magnamhuts so I just stopped trading altogether that day. Really harshed my mellow.

I'm really sorry to hear that. It isn't right at all. It's one thing to rip on each other every once in a while while playing a game and having fun with it, but to go below the belt like that and just be absolutely disrespectful is absolutely wrong. And it makes me sad for the entirety of the yugioh community. I've been playing this game for 20 years And slowly I've been seeing more and more of this disrespect and ridiculousness. Yeah back in ridiculousness. I miss when we all used to have fun. I miss when we could still be competitive and still be respectful towards one another and still have fun at the same time period we need to start bringing that back. Because the last thing we need is to see the game we loveGo extinct because more and more people leave the game and don't want to play it anymore. Goes without saying, I didn't win a single game and I also didn't go back. Now I'm getting a buddy into YuGiOh, I don't play my strongest decks against him - I don't even play rouge decks against him. I just slap some beat stick monsters in, some MST, soul taker for removal, generic traps... That way he can still win and if he loses he knows he would've won if he drew a certain card. In the early episodes of Yugioh, Kaiba even gives Joey advice, even if given in majorly passive aggressive tones. Agreed. People equate performance with social status, which has a lot of negative side effects. I see it a lot in not just yugioh but in all areas of life. Especially in sports - if someone is really skilled, people will let them get away with anything such as being horribly rude and immature and they are never confronted and forced to learn respect b/c everyone worships them. The saddest side-effect is that everyone else denigrates themself because they feel they aren't as skilled and are therefore less worthy or less good. In some ways, I think competition can be inherently toxic because of that... what if we emphasized fun instead of winning, how would sports look then?

"What if we emphasized fun instead of winning?" We'd all be playing against the computers, winning every single game and having 'fun'. Competition IS fun. Trash-talking, winning, losing, it's why people play games in the first place. The only time it isn't fun is when people aren't allowed to play at all, or aren't ever able to win. It's why I hate the "Why can't we have just have fun," phrase because it's meaningless because no one really believes that, they just don't know how to articulate the real reasons they aren't enjoying themselves.

I wasn’t able to afford the best cards, and my deck varied from week to week with what I thought would be most fun. Of course I wanted to win, but it was never a main priority for me. But I was often made to feel like that if I didn’t play the absolute best strategy that it was kind of a joke. At that very same store though I met really great people, who I still see playing today, who were very encouraging. So it’s not just like the entire store felt that way. Now that I’m busy getting my masters and teaching all day, I have less time to play so I haven’t really found a new locals to call home but still collect. Although the few stores I’ve been in, because I don’t get a chance to go to tournaments They host, I often felt like my opinion or presence there to simply look through and purchase singles or boxes wasn’t always welcome. Honestly? MTG in a nutshell from my experience. After Alara and Zen block, I took a break for a year when I was moving and changing jobs, then I came back to my hometown's card shop/social circle and all the super competitive guys were like "wow you wasted all that time going to grad school/working and now you're too far behind to catch up to us" and refused to acknowledge me in social events because I took a break from the game. They're now all 40 and live with their parents (unemployed or work at Burger King) and go to Friday Night Magic every week still.

So I was hired at a comic book shop because I knew how to play Yu-Gi-Oh and my husband and I were active in the Yu-Gi-Oh community at the time. We only had two players who had a strongly toxic attitude out of a group of 10 regular players, but everyone managed to have fun regardless. After working there the first year, I found that the more I had to cater to the whims of these two players, the less of the group showed up to play. They weren't unreasonable requests, it was just more tournament play, hosting more regular official events and stuff like that. It was just having to deal with their attitudes when they won (they were sore winners who would constantly say things like "Yeah well, I would have won quicker if so and so didn't play whatever and ruined my blank combo!" and so on). Everyone was fine doing tournaments, but when they were so frequent and with only official events going on, it was getting harder to afford the entry fees since most of the fun was gone. Not to say casual play died, it was more like the herd just moved on. After a while they stopped showing up for events and they found another shop to play at - which is fine. It's good to support other comic/game shops in general, but they were having the same problems we were. No one could get an active group going in the area because of the two people who carried on in their ways by kept trying to normalize this behavior in Yu-Gi-Oh. I mean, it's possible to drop the attitude and just play the game - but you really can't force anyone to. On the flip slid, you also can't force anyone to play with you either....soooo

i was really lucky as a newbie, one day got the sudden urge to want play a card game and just buy a charmer structure then go to my locals. Nicest people i've ever met, they help me build the deck, let me borrow their staple until i buy it myself! a really good first experience that make me loved the game, first impression is really matter after all.

As someone who has been with the Manga since its inception, I have always HATED that the community goes towards the idea of "EVERYONE NEEDS TO USE THE BEST DECK EVER TO COMPETE!" While simultaneously saying "You dont need the best deck in the world to do anything bro. You just need to spend 150 bucks on this deck that will be obselete in two weeks bro. Trust me bro, it works!" I dont care about being the absolute best player. I want to have fun building random decks and playing them. Thats why I got into the game. The new players have ruined it by making a meta and playing it off like there is no meta.

I'm casual af but I love the game so so so much and that matters way more than any accolade to me. Tonight there were some big headed guys and I kept being reminded of the sentiments you stated here. This was what I was most worried about as a returning player going to my first ever locals. The shop I go to is owned by someone I went to college with and I knew he was a great guy, but I was still worried about things like this, or judgment for not knowing the newer nuance of the game. Thankfully I both went with friends which made it more relaxing for me, and everyone there was beyond welcoming and fun to be around! Some of the regulars also helped teach my friend who was totally new to the game some rules and combos he wasn’t even aware of! It’s definitely helped solidify my love for this game both casually, and more competitively too!

I was thinking about this today! I play magic though, but trust me what you said is true for any card game with a competitive scene. I played moderately competitively. A few tournaments here, and there. I went through the whole cycle, and now I'm getting back into TCGs after a little hiatus. I'm finding a enjoy building/playing a deck that is good and fun, but not tier 0. I'm just sticking with my play group this time. Someone asked about tournaments firing around while we were playing, and I had to tell them I don't play tournaments anymore. The stress is too much for me. lol

I am someone who follows the competitive trends but have settled into being a more casual player. I use to go to locals and would play Dark Magician or Raidraptors fun strategies like that and would constantly hear “why don’t you build something meta”y answer would always be i don’t want to. I’ve only built 2 meta decks in my life Qlis when they were at full power and Adamancipator when they were at full power then the banlist cripples those decks and all of a sudden the investment is in the trash so I have a hard time dedicating the money to the game where a card is at the mercy of the banlist at any given time. I also realized that Yugioh was always about playing with friends for me and as my friend group has gotten older (we’re old now all in our early 30’s😂) some of them have moved away from the game and while my passion for it is still there my drive to put the money in isn’t. I have 2 close friends who still play and I usually only get 2 hours a week to get some games in and I’ve become content with that.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I DON"T PLAY AT THE GOD DAMN STORE ANYMORE!!! My problem is that half of them look down on me and my play style and how i build decks, in isolation of what is happening online. This makes the appeal of playing in person completely worthless, as i have no friends to go with. They are all competitive like 10 guys and 1 lady and i am LITERALLY the only casual player there. I LOVE a challenge because that's how i like to play games and that's how i learn games by playing them and not looking up guides or net decking but there's nothing wrong with that either. Like Tryharding/Winning does not equal universal fun.

Just adding my perspective to this one. I for one love the divide between the "constant toppers" and the "Plebs" for lack of a better term. I always measure my games off how well I do against them. Did I break their dragon link board? Did I out their mine. I might be in the minority here but with these wins, I have been able to learn what they personally have over me and I think that it's helped me become a more self-reflective player with almost a talent in creating openings for my wins. Also I might be a masochist, you know that you are a threat when multiples of the constant toppers see that you want to improve and they personally help you to do so.

Hard to even get other people to be into it since the ego is strong of so many and it not always welcoming.

However when a mine player told me to quit the game because I don’t play floodgates and I’ll never win hurt. It actually made me look into other shops. Now this week I found a closer shop that isn’t an ots but weekly tournaments and people there aren’t toxic pos. It sucks for the shop too because I was actually a big spender at the shop. I’m new to the game and buying all the staples/boxes/accessories needed caught the owner’s attention. Yeah it sucks to lose a shop to toxic people but now I have a new much more fun shop.

When I play online and it's another Swordsoul, Floo or other deck that's trying real hard I'm not a fan. It's one thing to rip on each other every once in a while and just have fun with it as long as you don't go below the belt, but to Be absolutely toxic and disrespectful disrespectful to make someone feel less of a human being over a card game Is just absolutely disgusting andisgusting and should not be tolerated. So they usually give bulk, (cuz they do play competitive) from their packs (cuz they buy and open entire booster boxes) to younger players (like me) who can't buy so much product they have boxes and boxes of commons. Also, if they can find something they need in my trade binder, they'll trade for it.

While I do think it can be viewed that way I never thought of it that way. Even when they're making fun of it, you can tell they love the game. And they make videos like this, that encourages people to be more welcoming to new, players, and for new players to get better. I don't really know what I'm talking about, I don't even play the game, I just like hearing people talk about it, so my opinion doesn't mean anything. I just wanted to say I enjoy the videos. I'm lucky enough to have a really good locals scene. The super competitive players who generally win the events always try to help the people who are less competitive either learn new combos for the decks they play, or point out mistakes that were made so that next time you face them, you will have a better idea on what to do. The people who are more casual have a great time on the lower tier tables. Honestly, I would put myself in the worst person bracket purely because I play floowandereeze. It is a deck that I know is annoying to play against, but it is relatively cheap for a meta viable deck minus the staples, and is really easy to learn. When I'm not playing in a paid entry duel I will always play one of my other decks, being charmers, fortune ladies, crystal beasts or numerons.

Competitive players are fine, so long as they aren't demeaning. They can give advice and insist on the usage of some cards, but understand that casual players may not want to invest in those more potent cards, due to either flavor (they want to play pure) or cost. Casual players are alright so long as they can accept that losing is to be expected in games. I play this game casually with pure Plunder Patroll, F.A., and Machina. Might build a GOAT format deck to play with a friend.

There will always be something called meta in anything with competition, maybe you want to say you want a more diverse meta? or you dont like the way the meta is going? but there would always be something stronger than other decks, and believe me I also wish I could play way less popular archetypes but the only solution I found is playing with friends or other like minded people that wanna try "weaker" stuff so we both have fun with unusual cards.

The problem is the meta decks is just too narrow of a field especially lately. I mean its been sprite and tearlament recently almost no variety. Yeah a few different engines mixed in but its just.....to narrow. Honestly you need to find a group that plays "non meta decks" that's when I have thr most fun

You’re not the only one who wants that. I really wish Konami would officially allow Heart of the Underdog tournaments already.

My old group I'd play locals with had a ranking system within the group, essentially it was just that, merits are what granted you a higher ranking. We had like 10-12 of us at one point and I was ranked in the middle, despite only playing Fluffals for several years. It was hard to determine where I ranked truly because I technically nerfed myself by only playing one deck but sometimes in casual matches they'd offer me one of their decks as a loaner and I'd do really well despite not knowing full combos or the deck lists. "If Cole were to sit down and just build a pure meta deck with all the staples, I think he'd probably top any of us here," is what one of them stated in the group chat. The reason why I didn't was because I couldn't afford to at that time. Our ranking system was just for fun so we can make good tournament brackets and it was always fluctuating, nobody bragged about getting 1st because there was always a new person there every other locals. Also card collection, deck building and experience played a factor in those rankings. Me being as casual of a player as I was, I wasn't always there to play so that was another reason why I was hard to rank.

7:59 I do that inside my head. It's only because I make a mistake and I have play each turn like it's my last one. I'm on a self redemption arc from the last Konami tournament I lost from years ago. I only have myself to blame.

I played Yugioh in its infancy and got back into it when XYZs were fairly new. When I got back into it I was very casual, I was that stereotypical old school player that didnt adapt to new cards but played with what I had and enjoyed the game win or lose. Part of the reason I dropped Yugioh entirely was cause I'd take breaks as a casual player and everytime I got back in there'd be a new card type and it was just a bit annoying, most of it was due to the local store, there was only the one and the yugioh regulars had a hierarchy and only tended to pay any attention to me when it came to actually dueling in a tournament, any other instance I wasnt worth their time.
