The PlayStation Portal has been a VERY controversial device, but I couldn't help myself but to have an absolute blast with it. I got to spend a couple weeks with this thing and honestly, it allowed me to get more playtime in my PlayStation 5 games than I'd been able to for months. But it does have way too many limitations and some really bizarre physical issues. Here's to hoping there's a PlayStation Portal 2! This is my PlayStation Portal Review from a Steam Deck user.

The portal runs on a snapdragon chip that has bluetooth on it, it's disabled in software unfortunately. it also runs on a super locked down version of android, once modders crack it open and unlock it's functionality etc for example running moonlight, you'd be able to stream your steam library (or any registered exe) to the portal. right now it's just not worth it in my eyes but it does have a market and it does seem promising

There's been multiple new videos recently within the last few days that have shown people using the loophole which is buying a transmitter and plugging it up to to the 3.5 jack but they've noticed latency issues.. I could be completely wrong but I'm assuming since this is a remote play device And you're already dealing with latency issues because it's not 100% real time they decided not to go with Bluetooth.. multiple videos show a average latency of 83 milliseconds with the best setup which is still faster than the Xbox game pass when you stream on cloud.. The PS5 didn't come with a main web browser and is hidden because of the PS3 being jailbroken and people pirating games same thing with the PS4 and now the portal doesn't have a web browser at all and it doesn't have a hard drive or any SD card slot which is going to make it much harder to jailbreak That's why people are having issues jailbreaking the PS5. The PSP was one of the most jailbroken devices at Sony made..

From a person who's been remote playing for almost 2 years I can tell you that even using my phone that's a Note 20 ultra when playing first person shooter games you can hear the audio lag at times from the testing people have done with the new pulse explorers in the link technology to the PlayStation portal it looks like it removes that damn near completely..

Agree with all the points you brought up Adam! I love the concept of the Portal for sitting down on the couch and playing some games or what have you. But the price is my biggest grievance with it. At $200 USD, that's a LOT. It's the same price as a Switch Lite for crying out loud, a fully dedicated handheld. If you're gonna charge that much, it should be the undisputed, no-compromises experience for PS5 remote play experience (ie: give me an OLED or high-refreshrate display). If we see these on the clearance racks in a year or two for 100 bones, then maybe I'll give it a shot.

The issue you had with the portal while your missus was downloading an update is likely because of qos prioritisation, in other words, your router/switch either doesn't support, or isn't fast enough for, prioritising real-time streaming. Even though WiFi and wired do seem to be substantially different, they still have to be processed by the same network hardware for packet switching and routing and if the device is bogged down by a high bandwidth download (like it is with steam) you'll have issues with real-time streaming. As for the device, it's such a missed opportunity, and is far too expensive imo, if it was say $149 it'd be closer to being reasonable, but it's the ideal device for me, as our lass wants to use the switch on the TV, but I also want to use the PS5 and this would allow us to both play games comfortably while being sat next to each other on the settee.

4:47 Does remote play work differently on the PS5? When I remote play on my PS4 I can use any controller than connects to my phone (it says in the video 3rd party controllers don’t work with remote play). I’ve used controllers by Steelseries, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. Pretty much any controller that my phone can conn3ct to works when I remote play with my PS4.

All of the missing features you mentioned and a bit more polish would have made this worth $200, even for a Steam Deck owner like me. The near-seamless connectivity would make the Portal my go-to remote play option if it came with those features or had a lower price point ($120 would have been my absolute max). Perhaps I could even stomach the bad erognomics. But man, did Sony miss the mark. And the shenanigans of not adding Bluetooth to force people to buy PS branded headphones is just plain silly.

8:46 This has bugged me for like every portable device I've tried and/or seen ever; that handling "a screen-with-a-controller device" normally would angle the screen mostly near-facing the ceiling. Interesting how this gets noticed now with the Portal and not with similar -screen-controller- handheld devices like the Steam Deck, and I thank you very much for tackling that here! The slant of the DualSense down to conform to one's palm seem to indeed contributes to that angle since, yeah, it's basically a split, slightly-downsized DualSense with a screen attached to it `lol`. It definitely was the wrong choice aligning the screen to the face of the controller; They could've slanted the screen downward, angled towards the player, or whichever solves that angle. _Edit:_ Also that cracking sound, *ohmygahd* xD

looks like a decent accesory to get second hand and/or discounted a couple of years down the line if the need presents itself, but i agree 100% with you no way i'd pay $200 when it doesn't even allow for PS Now, Digital PS1, PS2, PSP & PSVita games to be played natively, SONY missed the mark with this.

I did really *want* to like the Portal but I was a bit disappointed. It feels like it was so close to being an amazing part of the Sony product line, but falls short in many ways. A lot of people are talking about potential modding in the future, but I've always been hesitant to take that approach since Sony is so good with security and they protect their stuff well, and you shouldn't buy something for what it could do, but what it can do now. Overall a frustrating miss on Sony's part but maybe with time it could get better? Great video though! 😊

Great review, I picked one up so i can play my ps5 without the need to sit at a desk by myself and instead watch tv or spend time with my wife. I do understand the pricing complaints but I also think in a world where people willingly and happily spend 200 dollars on "pro controllers" spending the same amount for a controller, with a screen that allows you to play from anywhere isn't entirely unreasonable. I do agree with alot of your criticisms of the device though.

@@EposVox I completely understand, I just think pricing is a hard topic to handle in reviews both positively and negatively because everyone values different things differently. Some people see it worth it to spend the money on an OLED tv and others only see worth to buy a cheap tv. It can just become sticky.

I don't see this as a handheld if ur limited to always having to be connected to a PlayStation 5 console. Why would u even want to bother using this on cell phone connection outside of the home? You'd get way better experience playing on other devices not relying on a PS5 to be on or the obvious the internet.
