The PS portal was designed for gamers who fall under these categories: Who travel alot and can use a travel hotspot to connect. Who share a TV and cant access their PS5 at any time. who want to continue those games that have over 100 hours like Final Fantasy, Diablo Horizon Feels like it was made for adults who started the PS journey since PS1 was first released

As someone who still owns a working Vita and am actually looking forward to the next Portal restock, I agree that the Vita was wayyy ahead of its time. It’s a shame Sony really shot themselves in the foot with all those anti-consumer choices, which it doesn’t really look like they learned much from when you look at the Portal. Still interesting to see where this tech goes in the next few years.

Your spot on, with the Portal is for those who tick the boxes. I've been remote playing on a Samsung Tablet S7+ for a few years but have to prop the tablet up to use it. The Portal is by far the most convenient way to remote play for me. I've never played so much in my life lol. Whenever I can't get on the big screen I just chill with the family and use the Portal. My lunch breaks at work I hotspot and use Portal. Currently playing my backlog games I want to Platinum like Days Gone and next Crysis 3. The LCD screen is actually really nice but I obviously notice a BIG difference going back to my OLED TV. I have two WiFi boosters around my house so always have an excellent internet connection and have upto 1GB internet speeds. I found that disabling HDCP on the PS5 in the HDMI settings eliminated all lag, but today there's a Portal update which I think may have fixed the lag/stutters. I like that the PS5 is acting as a server for the Portal with your full game library, with full duel sense features and we don't have to buy standalone games for it but disappointed we can't install any games and play natively. I would of paid a bit more for internal storage to do this. For those with unlimited access to your game setup, I wouldn't recommend buying a Portal. Overall I enjoy my Portal, but for what it is it's expensive, hopefully they'll unlock Cloud gaming on it and eventually the price will drop.

Oh the Portal is a great device by the way I'm loving so far. The screen is bright and colorful, the controls feel better than my Edge. I wish the device came with USB-C 3.1 I'd have the option of using my AR glasses. In my opinion that's the only setup for remote play that could top the Portal because with all other setups you're sacrificing something when not using the Portal. 😊 It's either battery life, all in one convenience, screen quality, ergonomic comfortability, or uninterrupted game play. The Portal is the best option for PS5 remote play hands down. 🙂

The input latency is really bad. DF found that it was an additional 80ms on top of system latency. You can even see it here in this video. 11:42 when the screen goes black. There are 3 frames difference, and in a 30fps video, that is ~90ms difference. Moonlight on the other hand, at 60fps (same as ps portal) is under 50ms. Really too bad that Sony isn't using bespoke software or a direct link to the ps5 - not to mention all the other artificial limitations Sony has implemented.

I bet that all people would love to play the Portal away from home so unfortunately from my experience this device gets the job pretty well at home with the same router both PS5 and the Portal connected with it but when I go outside trying hotspot with my phone 5G up to 500 Mbps it’s useless, I must spend more money for a travel router to barely keep it running smoothly.

It was basically made for Playstation diehards who love to have/collect Playstation stuff because it's been sold out since release so even with all these mixed comments it's still hard to get it like the ps5 once was. New tech will always be a winner in this age of tech. Crapy or not, it seems like ALL tech has a place in someone's collection. We've all seen hundreds of gaming stuff come and go and in the end pretty much everyone after something is gone says "I should've got one just because now they don't make it anymore or I shouldn't have sold mine" and that alone I believe nowadays makes everything game tech desirable weather it's good or bad. Then there's the other half who most definitely find a good use for it. I don't watch reviews for opinions on products I watch reviews to see all the features & to see it in use. It's easier to let someone else figure it all out 1st so when I buy it I already know how to use it like a pro! 😁

for only $200 you ain't getting an oled screen. they probably didn't add one to keep price lower n see how sales would do. then a pro model with oled screen will come out since sales were really good. probably be $100 more for oled screen.

Sent mine back; it's garbage. 100% relies on wifi, so if you were hoping to take it on the go, good luck at getting a good connection on public wifi. You can't log in to the guest network without using your phone, which kind of defeats the purpose, and the lag is notable in a lot of fast-paced games. My S22+ does remote play much better; I just need to get a backbone or something similar.

Just bought Pulse Explore - they are only good (crisp sound) for gaming (music is bad) and not as comfortable as my Sony LinkBuds So actually disappointed with them.

Take the PS5 dual sense controller on a Steam Deck and you got the perfect hand-held device. However, comparing Steam Deck to Playstation Portal is not fair because they're not the same device. PS Portal is exclusively for streaming games.

In this post-Steam Deck world, _no one_ wants another locked down closed garden handheld, which you can't easily run emulators, etc, on. Which is exactly what another handheld from Sony would be, and anyone who says they want one, hasn't put much thought into it... The future of handheld gaming is in handheld PC's: they give the customer full control of what they paid for, allowing them to run whatever software they want, with no "hacking" or soft-modding required. Sony is unlike Nintendo: they don't excel in making kid-friendly handheld games, like Pokémon and Animal Crossing. So when compared to the Switch, their handheld would look like the _market loser_ , just as the PSP and Vita were viewed as. Sony excels in AAA games, but all of those PlayStation exclusives are now (eventually) coming to PC, so there's less need for a dedicated Sony handheld for that. For those who dislike PC gaming, Steam OS bridges the gap between a user friendly OS designed for console and PC gaming. It's not 100% perfect, but thanks to Valve's regular updates, it is always getting better. Just my opinion, of course. Sorry for the long post.

I think Sony realizes the current handheld market is tough to crack. This piece of HW they put out required almost no R&D and investment. It's a relatively cheap thing they can sell and make a profit on. Developing an entire new console, and supporting it is a huge investment and the market is quite crowded as you pointed out. I wouldn't hold my breath on a portable Sony console.

Wow, you gave this a good review. I was thinking about getting it but now, eh not so much. I like having physical media only if they would create a way to up load it to digital like they do with movies to own since I'm already purchasing it. Also not being able to use it to look up other apps is also a miss for me since Nintendo switch does let you.

I have seen a lot of reviews of the Portal and all seem to be missing the actual point of this great machine…What if you have limited space and no monitor/tv because your a student or living still at home with parents ???? Surely this then comes into why the Vita was so great….not everyone is a pro gamer and the vast majority of people put up with latency and resolution problems just to enjoy an hour or two of relaxing games at the end of a crap day…..Well done Sony

The comprises will always be there.. games develop faster then the hardware for handhelds. Nintendo realized that 2, 3, decades ago.. handhelds can't runn bigg aaa games without comprises. You make a handheld and then you develop games based on the hardware.. not the other way around. People keep saying it's not true.. but the reason Nintendo is actually flourishing with that same idea more then 30 years later should say enough. Where there better graphics possible in the 90s sure.. but with bigg comprises. Same goes for the 2000s and the same thing is going on now.. the device that understands its limitations and focuses on what they can do survives.. look at the steam deck and again Nintendo.. don't get me wrong! I love the rog ally! But if you look at it objective.. the deck and Nintendo actually do things way better.. that comprise between quality and trying to be the most powerful will still be there in the future. And looking back 30 years.. you know which side will win that war! The ones that know their limitations over the one who wants to be the most powerful.

If the Portal was out before the Steamdeck I wouldn't own one because remote play was my reason for getting the device. I ask that you guys please stop adding to the confusion by dancing around the simple fact it's a controller. To compare anything on portable consoles other than the screen and the portable console's controllers is very misleading. Great vid though don't get me wrong, excellent job. Help end the nonsense and make it understood that the Portal is no different than the Edge, they are controllers set up with different features. 😊 Like the Escalade pick up truck and the Escalade Extended Cab... Very different in configuration but both are Escalades. 😊 🖖 Have a good one.
