Playstation 3D Display: Better in 2019 than 2011

Ғылым және технология

This thing has really changed how I look at gaming now. I want to play everything with it, and I nearly can!

I really like this, but even mine is starting to fail. I can't believe that during the whole time I was filming I didn't record it happening but mine is exhibiting the random black screen issue. I don't know for sure that it is related to the EEPROM that prevents it from turning on, but I suspect so.
More info on the problem and repairing it can be found here if you want to learn more:

I will be repairing mine so that will be coming up here some time.

I owned one and they were notorious for having high failure rates, which is why they never took off. Mine was no exception, it got returned almost immediately due to constant input failure with regular 2D games. My friend gave me his defective one as well, which I still own and sometimes works, but usually doesn't. The things were just cheaply made and just burned out. And yes, the first thing I said when I bought it was, it was a nice mirror from Sony.

I played Uncharted 3 entirely on 3D when it came out. It was one of the greatest gaming experiences I've ever had. It's just unbelievable the way people ignored and even got angry at this attempt on 3D gaming. We should have had more of these. PS: Enslaved was also great!

People got angry because they're fucking sheep, all the articles would do backhanded compliments towards 3D via passive aggressive quotes like: "While you need to don those dorky glasses, the effect is rather interesting". Obviously people would internalize that and not even enjoy the experience because they became too self conscious, then they'd pile on those myths over "headaches", "cash grab", "gimmick"... the narrative was stacked against 3D... in English speaking countries mind you. Since these talking points didn't translate from English to other languages, everywhere else that didn't speak English, they loved 3D and adopted it immediately. But since America sets the trend, Japanese and Korean manufacturers stopped supporting 3D because 'Murica.

Lmao, this used to be my daily driver for over a year when i switched to PC EDIT: Just got done watching the video, and i 100% agree with what you said, but i think it made a fairly decent PC monitor. If you could look past the ghosting and sharpness. I remember i had long broken my 3D glasses way before PC gaming was a shine in my Eye. Before i was going to replace the monitor for a shiny new true 144hz display i decided to order some new 3d glasses for the TV. After a bit of finicking around with Nvidia drivers and settings, i was able to get it working. And the 3D effect it produced was amazing. I played on a 1070ti so it was hauling really well and never any dips in frames. I tried many demos and such, but the only game i ever got to work natively was Overwatch, to my surprise. It was just a game that was compatible with the 3D vision/drivers of nvidia, i found it on a list somewhere. So i tried it, and it was incredible. Reminded me of playing Tron legacy but smooth af and the depth was great. Nostalgia aside, this monitor had many shortcomings, but it did what it set out to do well.

I've owned one for a couple years and use it as my main PS4 display as well as a secondary PC display. To be honest, I haven't noticed any issues with ghosting/motion/smooth scrolling on it, the colors are probably the best out of any screen I've used (and while my own have always been modest, I've used some quality panels) and it's just such a good size for a screen that's meant to be sitting fairly close to you rather than mounted on a wall a few meters away. I don't even own the glasses as mine came with just the panel haphazardly strapped between two pieces of styrofoam, but I've been low key looking for a second one of these and I'll definitely grab one if I see a complete set. I've also seen sets of three of these mounted vertically side by side to create a larger display, though the side bars on them are a little wide for that solution in my personal opinion.

(I ask because I have monitor and glasses put aside) and mainly game on my 65" LG TV in 4K. The LG is also 3D, but playing on it was kinda horrible. Too much ghosting, and had to sit so far away, it negated the point of a large screen. Maybe when VR headsets get better resolution, I'll snag one.

The best 3D display these days is a modern VR headset. The Oculus Quest, Rift S and Valve Index all comfortably render 720p-ish virtual displays without the drawbacks to brightness, pixel response and refresh rate and are still actively supported hardware.

  • @AndyAndyAndy11111

As an Index owner I'd say you still don't really get 720p quality. The only HMD that I know of that approaches that level of virtual resolution is the HP Reverb. There's some other drawbacks like godrays and comfort too. For as comfortable as I find my Index it still obviously gonna weigh more and be less comfortable than a pair of glasses. On the positive side it doesn't have the drawbacks you mentioned plus the 3D effect will always be perfect and you don't need to find a sweet spot like you would with glasses.

TV and monitor companies have nothing to do with VR and are not focusing on that. It's simply hard to sell something that requires you to wear glasses to use (such as this video demos) or something where you have to watch from dead center (3DS method). Plus at that time there was some major 3D movie fatigue, every other movie was coming out in 3D. Movies made the tech feel gimmicky which is a shame because I think it shines best in games.

Warning, wall of text incoming because I have to thank you: 7:50 Thank you for going over this 1 very detail, because I have looked EVERYWHERE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO ALLEVIATE THIS. It is the ONLY complaint I have with this monitor. The last thing I had was an oldschool television by Curtis Mathes. You know, big equipment covered by a large frame and that glorious SD screen that was bright, but anything you watched on it was very vibrant and did NOT have this very issue I have with the Sony display. I don't know how the older TVs used to work, but when I asked my cousin about this little thing here, he explained to me that this has to do with the PANEL. He asked whether it was a TN panel or IPS panel display. Obviously if I know anything about that, then the monitor is most definitely not an IPS class monitor and definitely not OLED, because from what I understand and have noticed, is that this little annoyance does not happen on those displays. Mostly. However, he did end up getting an IPS monitor from ViewSonic around the time I asked him about this. Mother of Croatia did I really see what not having this issue was like. Same amazing colors, better viewing angles, but most importantly, it DID NOT have this strange motion blur effect when he played games. Now I have played games that make this almost not apparent at all, BattleField Bad Company 2 is the first to come to mind and I once watched my sister play Fortnite on it. As you've probably noticed, when the images on the screen are still, the picture quality stands up very well to other monitors and Televisions, I've compared it to those of the family. But ONLY when any information on the screen is in motion will that blur effect happen and I always have to 'get into it' when I'm gaming or watching a movie in order for me to not notice it as much. So yeah. Even to this day, the picture quality of this Display still holds up. It's beautiful, I will always feel this way. The problem is this little annoyance. If the display did not have this issue, I would recommend it to anyone. Like you, I would not recommend this to people who rely on their PCs for everything, especially gaming, unless PC gaming is able to lessen the blow due to better frame rates and visual quality, although I wouldn't know. I still don't have a gaming RIG. I would also not recommend it to anyone who is used to OLED televisions. You'll love the picture quality but then start noticing that something is 'off' when you watch stuff on it. And anyway, it's more for gaming as was the intention. You're supposed to sit very close to it. I think that's the last of my gripes, in which case, thank you again. KZread got it right for once and recommended me a video that ACTUALLY interests me. This is my first time to your channel and I appreciate what you've done here. I'll pay my dues by subscribing, hitting that like button and clicking the notification bell. If you end up finding a way to workaround this issue, I'd really like hearing about it.

Very interesting! I absolutely love 3D (and VR - like you, I don't see them as competitors) and I've been very sad to see its decline in recent years. I'll continue using my current 3D TV to watch 3D movies until the tech breaks, then I guess it's off to eBay or something because I don't see why I'd ever want to see a movie in 2D if it's available in 3D. To me, it's just such a leap forward, SO much more immersive. I've been looking for a decent 3D-capable computer monitor. Too bad this doesn't seem to be it either. I don't want to get something with 3D-vision; 1) because proprietary and, as shown here, it's sensitive to Nvidia losing interest, 2) because I just don't like shutter glasses in general. I've never tried a pair that worked well for me. Polarized glasses work a lot better for me, better sense of continuity in the image. And also cheaper and easier to replace, of course.
