I'm so sorry, it's really not good for my channel. You can check the views on this video yourself. It's doing very badly already. A guitar video will reach about 1000 views in 24 to 28 hours. You can check back tomorrow and see how this video did. Projections look bad :(

I love your videos. They are very helpful as I am learning on my own and I find shoulder rest quite uncomfortable and some times even painful. I do understand the viewer count matters on KZread. Please do some violin videos when you can would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Please, keep making the violin technique videos. They are so very helpful, especially for those few of us beginners who don't want to use shoulder rests or things like that. You have things that you can teach the world. Things that it can be hard for me as a totally blind person to get good descriptions of. Do not underestimate the value of what you have to offer. For me it is absolutely priceless.

Thank you for your comment Sabrina. Unfortunately I have decided to not make any more violin videos. It's very hard to get subscribers as it is and the moment I make even one violin video my KZread stats completely collapse. It's very depressing and it makes me want to stop with KZread. To avoid that feeling I am exclusively a guitar channel for now.

Thanks for intonation tips. I omitted a critical step recently in my zeal to get started: tune up first and if you’ve recently changed strings, check your tuning often, maybe every ten minutes.

I have been playing the violin for a decade or so and still (despite a degree in music - classical guitar) have great difficulty with vibrato on the violin. Having achieved a high standard on classical guitar which has helped me with violin learning very much I foolishly thought that it would help with violin vibrato. I have been watching videos on YT on vibrato and will watch yours. I really enjoyed your video. Now, on to your vibrato video and more practicing it. Ahhh.

Thank you so much for this video and for leaving the others up. I'm just beginning at age 58 because i was given a cheap discarded one. My left shoulder is my bad shoulder and i have a long neck, so i think i need an alternate way to play. I also have relatively short fingers, but, oddly, i caught my thumb going up farther than it "should", and, when i tried to correct it, well, it was frustrating. Anyway, thanks bunches from an old lady here in the middle of the United States.

I appreciate your videos as a beginner to the violin. I threw away the shoulder rest after about the third time trying to use. Then I stumbled across your video on the russian bow hold (which I've switched to) and it's made my playing so much less stressful. Thank you, and I second the comment that I'd love to see more violin videos

Yes! I had horrible back and neck problems when I started playing with a shoulder rest but removing it solved all of those issues. I also like, as a guitarist first and foremost, being in contact with the instrument and really feel it.

This was all great, and timely for me, as I have just resumed trying to play violin after putting it away when I was 18. Now facing some issues (broken collarbone healed with a bump, and the need to find my intonation again -- muscle-memory). You sound great on the classical stuff too! 23:56 Svengali look :)

I've only just found your videos today and they have been very helpful. Could you please tell me what chinrest you use as my violin has a side mounted chinrest and the attaching screws dig into my collarbone so I need to look at a middle chinrest. Thank you for these violin videos and I'm glad you are leaving them up. Maybe you could have two KZread channels 🤷🏼‍♀️

On downshifting - I never had any issues. I simply took the time to find a high chin-rest that fully fills the gap between my collar-bone and jaw. I can rest my jaw on the chin-rest very lightly without having to tilt my head to an unnatural angle. The chin-rest has a slight lip, so the fiddle is held firmly in place. Then I can shift up and down easily keeping my thumb in the natural position with no danger of displacing the fiddle.

Thank you very much for this video. It cleared many of my doubts. I still have few questions on using the russian bow hold. Can you please make a video on how to do spiccato, colle and sautille strokes with russian bow hold. Since russian bow hold relies on forearm motion, I am not sure how to do colle, spiccato and sautille bowing which are mainly taught as being relied on wrist motions.

To protect my collar bone, I'll usually wear a thin t-shirt. Also, I've stuck a small rectangle of thick felt to cover the chin-rest clamp. I stuck it on with white Blu-Tack - obviously I asked my luthier first and he said it would be fine. It's stayed in place for years.

Thanks for this content Christiaan. Questions: Do or did you ever find the feeling of the violin slipping off your collar bone & needing to "grip" it w/ your chin more? Do you get neck pain? Do you ever find that your russian bow hold doesn't allow for enough wrist flexibility? Do you find that playing fast is more difficult because your wrist is less flexible so you're using your arm more than your wrist? I only ask this because I'm working daily on increasing my speed & some violin youtubers are very critical of that bow hold, no shoulder rest, etc. which is how I play as well.

Just thought of something, got up to play and check. Do you look at where you're bowing on your strings more or at your left fingers "fretting"? (I also strum guitar so I'm used to watching my fret fingers.) I've learned enough on the violin, for simple very basic tunes, where the notes are by touch and accidentally found that if i look where I'm bowing more than at my fingers, i get a much better sound. If you don't have time to answer now, maybe you can in another video, or maybe others here will answer. Thanks ahead of time. (Of course, occasionally, i get maybe two good notes in a row and i close my eyes...sorry, it's taken 50 years to get a violin!) 😀

After tossing my shoulder rest I cheated by making a sling that keeps the violin from sliding away when I downshift. While practicing scales and shifting, I thought maybe I could go without the sling if I raised the neck before and unweighted the neck during a downshift. But if the sling works, why fix it?

in the old times people didnt have shoulder rests and they still played great violin.Unfortunately today every school teaches violin with shoulder rest.Your style is not unorthodox its just not in fashion.
