Playing Unrated Genius in Madrid Park During Candidates

Ойындар

On the evening of July 1, Hikaru passed through El Retiro Park in Madrid and played some chess. We have video (and some commentary!) courtesy of Hikaru's Second, Kris Littlejohn. More to come...

i got a question about this position termometer ... isnt it that that it shows a position strength from a perspective of one player only? i mean if player could make move that increases its termometer score it lies as to strength of position (as if you may make a move in that position than increases it then it lies) .. so not to lie this termomenter should show a position score that cannot be improved .. but if so isnt if from one player point ov wiev only? (im a bit lost in my logic at this moment)

@@johnstone5766 The thermometer is called the evaluation bar, and it works by a computer calculating X (usually 20 or 30) moves into the future, based on how the board is currently. As such, it doesn't represent how good one player is, it represents the advantage one player has, assuming both players play perfectly. The bar is negative if black is winning, and positive if white has an advantage. For example, let's say it's early in the game, and the bar is at +0.8. White is in the lead here, as white usually is by being able to go first, and that evaluation means the absolute best move by white will maintain that 0.8 advantage. If white makes the perfect move, it's now black's turn and will still show +0.8. Any move that black makes will, at best, keep it at +0.8 as the computer has already calculated all of these responses. If white makes a huge mistake, and gives away a bishop for free, that gauge will go from +0.8 to like -3 as the computer realizes black can just take the bishop and gain a huge tactical advantage.

@@MrMarcec85 One more example of an unjust world that is so often, as the saying goes, "sad but true." Chess has historically been a pay to play a game, and while it's true that the internet has made it more accessible for people to learn and play, that has regrettably had no real effect on the excessive costs involved surrounding the ordeal of live tournament chess. Without money, one simply can't compete equally. It's a shame that talent is so evenly distributed when wealth is anything but. You make a great point, as much as I wish you were wrong (as I'm sure that you do, yourself). Cheers.

To be fair, Hikaru was just playing casually, not really forcing anything. He was also well ahead on the clock. I mean, these days he is beating 2400s sacrificing the queen for a bishop so if he was really forcing there's no way somebody in a park would keep up. This is not to take anything from the guy, he played really well for the majority of the match. I think I would blunder from the emotions alone, playing Hikaru on the board.

@@alex86firelol this guy had a better move accuracy than hikaru. He might only be 2200 but he played a 93% accuracy here according to stockfish eval, whilst hikaru played 91% accuracy. The game finished in a drawn position. If not for time flagging, say if this was a +3 like most online chess, there’s a good chance the kid at the very least gets a draw. For the record stockfish 16 eval says that if he plays as accurate as he has been, he should actually win this game. You can say hikaru wasn’t taking it serious, but 91% accuracy is pretty serious lol. He just faced a worthy adversary here

It was winning for black but even if it was a draw with perfect play, unless you are a super gm you cannot hang out with them in an endgame. They have an incredibly vast amount of knowledge there from books, and long grueling studies. They make no mistakes. The guy, while a good 2200, would be simply outclassed. That is why the worst thing to do against a super gm is liquidate the position to an endgame.
