Rio is the definitive live version of YYZ. On this tour, they slowed it down a little bit, to make a more full, rougher sound. Not that it's bad, but the people who made the request were right...Rio!

I used to know every Rush song (including almost every solo) note for note. La Villa Strangiato might be a little harder to play if one doesn't struggle with odd time, but it was always my favorite of the two. Although I've forgotten how to play perhaps half of those songs now, YYZ and La Villa Strangiato are the easiest for me to remember because back then you had to figure everything out just by ear, and it took me a while to figure those two out.

The reason everyone requests the version in Rio is because Rush had never toured South America in like 30 years. They didn’t even know they were popular down there. The band was surprised when everyone knew every lyric to every song in English, but when they did YYZ, the crowd actually sings the melody along throughout the entire song. You just hear over 60,000 pumped up people in a soccer arena singing along with the guitar. It’s really amazing to hear a crowd that pumped. Anyway, that’s why the version of YYZ in Rio is so legendary.

@@Randsurfer Everyone has their opinion. Yours is certainly in the minority but I understand what you are saying. The tempo here seems too off from the original to my ears and I find just about every mix after Rio to be too heavy and compressed. To me, this mix sounds heavily produced vs Rio. Something even Rush fought with over the years trying to reproduce the true live sound. But again, we all have opinions. I think my point is this though...to the reactors...especially if they are having people pay for reactions....watch the version the person requested. To me, if someone said you should try this specific lager beer but the person tries an IPA...its is still beer but.....

  • @Randsurfer

From a Gary to Geddy your one of the most talented musician of all time! No one touches your talent on bass, keyboards, and singing! You are the definition of Unique and RUSH is not RUSH without your playing and vocals! To quote the movie: I LOVE YOU MAN! Alex and Neil as well!! This is my essay to people who may not know RUSH or who Neil was professionally and his contributions to the art of drumming and lyrical writing! Enjoy! RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary

To be clear, YYZ are the call letters for the Toronto airport, which is where the band originated. Additionally, the beginning beat of the song is in the rhythm and tempo of morse code for the letters YYZ. This band was so talented, driven, willing to take risks, confident and courageous, light-hearted and humorous, and perfectionists at their craft and dedication to their fans. I still mourn the loss of the GOAT, Neil Peart, who was as voracious a book reader as he was a dedicated and relentless student of drumming in any and all genres of music. I wish they were all still together and making music, but also appreciative for the music and shows forever imprinted into my memories.

Piling on. Rio was about the crowd. This has clearer sound because the crowd isn't nearly overwhelming the song by singing the music. As others have stated, a jam session is improvised. This is almost note for note the studio version. It's just an instrumental. The Allman Brothers, The Grateful Dead, Phish, Snarky Puppy, those are bands who all actually jam. Try "Lingus" by Snarky Puppy for an incredible instrumental with improvised solos. The We Like It Here version. This is both live and the actual studio recording. This includes a truly legendary synth solo by Corey Henry.

If you want to hear the lyrics to YYZ you have to watch it live in Rio. Its the only recording ofbit that I know of with the lyrics. :D This song really puts Geddy on show. Its a bass heavy song. They wrote it for bass and Alex came in later and added guitar to it to complement the bass. So in the mix the bass is pulled forward so you really hear it. And Geddy plays the bass like a guitar. Its not a bass the way he plays. He gets so many nites out ofbit so fast and creates so much sound its incredible. Dynamics the whole works. Watching his amd Alex's fingers when theyre just playing and rela,ed and having fun is mind blowing. They make it look so easy. Not even breaking a sweat.

What you may not pick up on because of camera angles is that Geddy has feet pedals under the Key board that he can use as a bass while playing the key board. The pedals can also play some of synthesizer (key board) when he's fingering the bass on a more intricate bass line. Some songs you will see him doing both while signing. One of the many reasons that they don't should like just a three piece band live.

Their music is so intricate that it doesn't really allow for improvisation but I'd really love to see them just jam without any plan to see what happens. A fun reaction! YYZ is a top notch instrumental with a catchy groove. Geddy Lee’s bass lines are always unique and made to fit while adding color. Another bass player who plays like a soloist is Billy Sheehan. He is like the Eddie Van Halen of bass players. You should react to him in Mr. big’s song “Addicted to that Rush”, live in Tokyo (1991).

YYZ is the airport to my hometown of Toronto, Canada the Morse Code at the start of the song is the sound you hear if tune the YYZ VOR/DME on your aircraft radio. Here is what it looks like Morse ID: -.-- -.-- --.. Frequency: 112.15. this whole song is in Morse Code. If you ever get the chance to hear the VOR you will hear where they got the song from. I know from flying as a private pilot in and around Toronto I have tuned this frequency many times.

In the states it is called YYZ and all other English countries call it YYZed due to the fact that Z is pronounced "Zee" in the US and "Zed" everywere else.

YYZ is basically 3 solos intertwined. These are 3 virtuosos in the same band. No lyrics but plenty of music. I've been a fan of these guys since hearing 2112 in the 70s. It was really sad losing Neil. I get choked up whenever I hear The Garden. The crowd in Rio was really intense.

For more gifted bassists, also check out John Entwistle (The Who) and James Jamerson. Geddy cited Jamerson specifically as one of his influences.
