Great video, covers most of the tips I would share to a newbie as well, and then some. Only one aspect missing that I can think of; gigbag/case recommendations. Of course, one size does not fit all, so there is something to be said about how tight the fit should be, what to consider about carrying options, whether to go gigbag or softcase or hardcase,.. etc.

Thanks for this information! I just joined an 80s band, bought a Fantom 07 but need an 88 weighted piano keyboard and knowing that the ModX can synch with the drummer is what I need for the arpeggios to synchronize with instead of having to hit the tap tempo button from time to time

Great video Scott! My Ultimate Apex 48 only lasted 6 gigs before the center leg fell out. I did not notice it until our next rehearsal and could not find it. Thought it would be a quick fix that would fall under a 1 year warranty or at least could buy a leg as a spare part. Nope - no spare parts and would have to pay to ship back for a warranty evaluation. If they determine it’s not warranted, you have to pay $25/hr plus the part costs. Not happy and will not by Ultimate products again. These are not cheap stands and Ultimate should stand behind their products!

Interesting, I have heard the opposite from people, that they have had them for years and have been indestructible! I see that you can buy parts on the Ultimate site...but not legs. I wonder why?

Pretty sad to hear that. They are heavy too. I bought a Stay Music stand last year. It resembles an Apex, but is all aluminum. I know some of the Apex stands have plastic parts of them. My stand is very light for light weight keyboards, but they sell similar stands for heavier keyboards. Check them out. I have two 2 tier Ultimate Support stands that were given to me. Very bulky, heavy and I'm not too impressed with them, but for free I make use of them. Before the Stay Music stands, I like "Invisible" stands. I have two of them also. Sadly have been off the market for years.

Wow! Great insight on the mic to drummer….never heard of that. Just switched to a Modx +.. Mainstage is to glitchy and it makes me nervous as hell, I’ve been stuck with no sounds, or stems coming out of computer during live performances… luckily I had a Yamaha P225 we switched to internal sounds just to get through the gig…Only switched years ago because Motif is sooo heavy, glad they made the Modx+ perfect for gigging musicians…..u have some awesome keyboards btw….

Nice demonstration of the drum syncing using the A/D feature of the Montage/MODX. I knew about that feature, but with this video I learned that the Montage/MODX midi clock (synced to the drum) can sync with other synths! Nice!

I've played "exclusively" live in rock bands since the 80s. I specialize in covers/tribute bands of 80s/70s rock music typically who produced melodic rock in an AOR format with a prog rock touch to it. Bands like Styx, Genesis, Foreigner, Kansas, Boston, Yes, Journey, etc. This year I'm doing a Cars tribute band, and also playing modern music in a wedding band (I haven't played much modern music in decades). Having owned, transported and spent a lot of money on keyboards over the years, my current typical live rig is by far the easiest to transport, the most versatile, and the most cost effective. I've never had a road crew and venue sizes have ranged from very tiny to stadiums & theaters. My Yamaha MODX6 is by far the most valuable keyboard in my collection despite not being nearly as expensive as some I bought. Playing the music I do requires using a lot of "famous sounds", and no single "light weight" keyboard is easier to obtain already made famous 80s/70s sounds from 3rd party sound collections than the MODX. File compatibility covers the sounds of the entire MOTIF series which have been and still are hugely popular with touring bands since 2001. Plus the Montage sounds are compatible and the DX-7 and other 1980s FM synths that dominated that era. The other part of my live gigging setup is a light weight 61 key MIDI controller with aftertouch, 9 sliders which can also be used as organ drawbars, and many knobs. My choice is the M-Audio Axiom 61. There are other similar ones on the market too. Aftertouch is not greatly missed from the Montage, Kronos or Fantom, but on older synths it was often well utilized in sound collections. As a laptop full of VST software synths is also part of my setup, aftertouch is greatly used occasionally with software modeled instruments of older synths that well utilized aftertouch. Need greater piano range? MIDI the same piano sound to two 61 key MIDI keyboards. Now you can cover the full 88 keys, though without weighted keys. Sure it's more limiting than a proper keyboard for piano, but it does work pretty well for some music, is a lot easier to carry and fits a lot easier on stage and in your small vehicle. Need aftertouch for your Montage/MOTIF or DX sounds? Do the same as needed. The laptop full of VST software replicas covers my favorite analog synth such as the OB-X, Prophet 5, Mini Moog, ARP Pro Soloist/2600, and many others. Using organ modeling software, I have great organ sounds with real-time drawbar control using the 9 sliders. My old Korg M1's I loved stay home as Korg's own VST does a great job replacing that at gigs. They also offer as a VST the Tritron Extreme and most of their classics. They offer some of the engines of the Kronos/Nautilus as VST's, and Korg offers their 3 very latest keyboards (the WaveState/OpSix/ModWave as VST's. Some Kronos sounds are provided in the WaveState. And I don't need the current Roland Fantom, Jupiter-X or System 8 keyboards either, because Roland basically offers them as VST's even compatible with those sounds, plus many more classic Roland synths some of which those 3 popular current keyboards can't cover like D-50 sounds, Jupiter 4, and others. I use a Mellotron VST and all kinds of classic instruments and current instruments. For stands, a year ago I order a Stay Music "Slim" 2 tier stand from Brazil I had shipped to the USA. I discovered it on KZread. It's only for light weight keyboards 22 lbs or less per tier. This stand sets up in 30 seconds, I can pick it up with my pinky, and it's the most compact 2 tier stand in my car on the market too. I use a light weight X stand for my laptop, but also have a laptop tray that goes on a mic stand if I prefer to use that. This setup is incredible really. I used to use up to 4 keyboards live, but with more creative use of splits and the MODX ability to advance patches with a pedal on the beat with seamless switching, I can generally get away with just these two for most gigs depends on the material. The MODX6 weighs under 15 lbs and goes in a back pack, freeing my hands to carry other gear. The Axiom 61 weighs 12 lbs. The MODX is the most powerful light weight keyboard on the market if you make use of multi-sampled instruments. The Fantom 0 is also light and powerful, but lacking in multi-samples if you make good use of them. There is no light weight Kronos, but my rig can cover some of the sounds plus I have a full sound collection of Kronos patches in Kontakt format on my laptop of the factory sounds, though you can't edit them like on the original. Just the raw samples, but still could be useful in reproducing some Kronos sounds. The whole setup is also compact on stage & in your vehicle. No roadies needed, yet very powerful and even.....affordable.

I agree about the MODX, it is super lightweight and powerful. That stand from Brazil looks great - but again, only for lightweight synths. One of the issues I didn't mention in the video is that I have had issues with laptop reliability - I've NEVER had a hardware synth crash, but I sure have had a laptop running a soft synth take a nap before.

@@ScottsSynthStuff Yes, the stand is limited to light weight keyboards. The manufacturer put up a KZread video titled "QUICK ASSEMBLY - STAY Keyboard Stand - Slim Model" demoing carrying the stand, unzipping it's carry bag and two keyboards setup in 46 seconds. Sold me, and I ordered one. The stand works great and looks nice, similar to the Apex stand. It's about $200 shipped to the USA. Besides the weight limited, as expected, if you do a lot of piano hammering, it could wobble a bit. I don't do a lot of that so not a problem for me, but I might in a couple songs a night. I'm willing to deal with it for the convenience. I own 4 two tier stands anyway, and leave some at my different bands. The Slim stand goes to gigs and unused otherwise. It is true a laptop could crash, and it does happen. The main thing is to have a backup plan expecting it could happen. At smaller gigs and even practice, I bring a netbook with me that can run older versions of the most important soft synths I run. I also have a backup hard drive that I can change as fast as a inserting a disc and rebooting in 1.5 mins. Still a lot faster than the Kronos or Nautilus boot. As for hardware synths crashing, with modern computer based synths such as the Kronos/Nautilus, Montage/MODX and Fantom/Fantom 0, it does happen occasionally. I've seen it happen on the Kronos myself a couple times and I hear about it fairly often. My MODX crashed twice in the 4+ years I've had it. The first time was at home. Crashed on the title screen just like the Kronos sometimes do. I rebooted twice, still crashed. Unplugged everything from it, and rebooted with just the AC adapter and it came back up fine. At a gig over 2 years ago, when I came back for our 3rd set it was crashed on the title screen. Fortunately, shutting it down and rebooting as the MODX/Montage take about 15 seconds, it came back up. It has not crashed since. Laptops crashing is somewhat predictable. I've been using soft synths since 1985 (on the Amiga computer, the first computers that ran MIDI soft synths), and loved the concept back then, and it's better than ever. I saw the light back in 1985 of what was possible, but very few people did. The concept of using a computer to replace hardware synths which is far cheaper, and far less to transport to gigs was very appealing. What is possible now exceeds even my dreams back then. I was even emulating brand name & model synths back in the 80s such as the Ensoniq Mirage sample and saw what was possible. I could load Mirage disks right on my Amiga's disk drive, which seemed amazing. Now I've replaced most of my classic hardware synths with VST's, and didn't need to buy a bunch of other newer ones. As for the crashing, it mostly occurs when changing sound files. This is generally done before starting a song, so it rarely crashes during playing a song, though could happen. But no more likely than a guitar string breaking, interrupting the song and the guitarist switching to an inferior guitar to get through the rest of the song and maybe set after a problem. In my bands, over the years the problems have been more likely from other instruments like amps failing or a problem with a cable to the mics or something rather than my laptop crashing. Also part of my backup plan is the MODX. It's powerful enough to get me through almost any song. It's just that, I'm very picky with my sounds and like to closely mimic the famous keyboard sounds used on the original songs. No current hardware keyboard comes nearly as close to being able to achieve the wide variety of classic keyboard sounds as what a laptop can do or VST's. That's why you have a wide variety of keyboards. Sure the MODX could play the songs, just not as well. And why would I use say a Kronos, Fantom or MODX when I need an OB-X, Prophet 5 or Mini Moog sound? For some of those sounds, sure it can mimic them. But it's much easier to make or find the proper sounds in VST's which model the original instruments. It's also a lot easier to transport gear back and fourth to band practices too. I try to have every song setup so I could play them on the MODX6 in case the laptop crashed. I also use the MODX sounds in addition to the laptop sounds. I have a pedal dedicated to changing patches and this makes it a lot more possible to make one small keyboard do the work of what used to take several keyboards as switching sounds on the beat was too difficult in the past. I do have some extra work in learning how I'd play songs this way vs my regular setup. Also, could be awkward since I just play this way normally, and I also practice playing the songs this way just in case. Setup at band practice with stands, wires and a MIDI controller left and one pedal at practice takes 5 mins to setup my MODX and laptop. By the way, about my light weight and tiny MODX6 strategy. Today's another example of where if you want a larger keyboard with 88 piano hammer action keys, you can often buy a used one dirt cheap and leave that at home or the studio. I saw an Alesis near me today with 88 hammer action keys for just 50 bucks! Internal sounds are said to not be working. A heck of a lot cheaper than a Montage 8! I could also leave one at home and one at practice if I wanted. I'm surprised more people aren't doing that kind of thing. I have a Kuzweil PC2 with 88 hammer action keys if I need a Montage 8 at home. Got it for free, $5000 originally. Sorry for the novel. I get carry away. LOL.

I'll second the endorsement of the MODX as light and powerful. I used mine for an 80s tribute recently and needed nothing else. The piano and organ were merely adequate, but the synthesizers, both analog and digital, were the stars and they really shined.

@@darrylday30 Have you checked out the Montage version of Organimation? While it's not equal to a dedicated Hammond synth or Hammond VST, it's still pretty good and far better than Hammond sounds on most romplers. And probably pretty close in quality to the Hammond of the Kronos/Nautilus or Fantom which although they have dedicated engines, are not as good as Hammond clones. Organimation offers the ability to adjust overdrive needed for rock bands, and real-time drawbars using the Super Knob in a unique way. It is a collection of patches that cover a number of very good Hammond sounds. The sky is not the limit however if you need a particular Hammond setting that doesn't happen to included, but it covers a lot. I mostly use Hammond VST's as I love the combination of my MODX & VST's.

Last band I saw was The Smile, instead of a multi synth stand they had each band member playing synths . So Johnny greenwood had a couple , a prophet and I couldn’t see the other . Thome York had a few in his area then the drummer had a complex modular . They have this kid playing with them on tour he opens for them with a sequenced solo act where he sequences his tracks then accompanies with a tenor saxophone. It was good but a bit abstract. I’m sure the people on drugs loved it…. Then he did some synth duty and chimed in with his sax a lot during the smiles show, got the impression he had worked his way up . Good kid .

A really great and useful video - thanks Scott. I've been thinking about buying a Fantom 06 to replace my Nord Stage 2 when playing live, mainly because it's slightly smaller and a lot lighter - the fact that you can also use it to power a second USB keyboard is a real bonus! I was going to point out that the outputs are balanced on the Fantom 0 (although not XLR) but someone else beat me to it! Loving your videos so far, keep up the good work and good luck on your forthcoming tour!

I think I must have been thinking of the MODX/Montage (unbalanced vs balanced). I know the Fantom is balanced, and thought "oh the Fantom-0 isn't"....but when I watched it after the video went live, I heard myself say they were unbalanced and realized "oh no, that's wrong!" :) Oh well. Too late now.

Hi Scott! Once again I have to send you a thank you !! This time for the music equipment insurance tip.... I had been worried for awhile about insuring my gear just under homeowners, and it was so easy to apply and get coverage (I already had my equipment inventory in an excel sheet so it was painless to fill out their form). I am now covered (at least for all the big ticket items.....) Now that I have a policy I am going to go more granular and include my software, accessories.... The peace of mind knowing I have the major stuff covered is wonderful!!! Thank you again!!!!

Thank you for the informative video and that tempo sync feature on the Montage is the bomb. I’ve been using two Standtastic stands since 1987, one for gigs and one for home. Best keyboard stands ever IMHO. If you’re an Apple Macbook user, Mainstage is a game changer and I’ll never gig without it controlling my rig. I built a pedal board that holds three sustain pedals and two volume pedals out of 3/4” plywood with heavy duty rubber feet and it fits perfectly in my Prophet 08 Thon case ( no longer gig with the P08). I’m running a Radial Key Largo for three synths and it has integrated USB audio and a MOTU MIDI patch bay. My keys are ASM Hyrdasynth Deluxe, Korg Kronos 2 61 key and a Sequential Prophet 6. Lots of plugins on the Macbook Pro like Omnisphere, Native Instruments and Arturia collections.

A lot of useful hints. Thanks. I turned to full VST setup years ago and I am proud of that. One MacBookPro, GigPerformer and your software collection will sing. I think hammond and rhodes simulations are today incredibly good, no workstation can reach that level.

The best tip for me was using a MIDI keyboard to access a different sound out of the workstation (a bit obvious in hindsight, but I hadn't thought of it, so there it is). But now I'm hot for a MODX, to get that synchro feature :)

Really interesting that the Montage and MODX can do that. Are there any other smaller beat detection devices that could generate a MIDI clock if you don't have that board?

Thanks Scott for describing the stage setup. I'd like to share that I do something similar with 2 keyboards. Lower level is a MODX-7. Upper level is a Wavestate. I used to just use an Arturia Keylab 49 at the upper level, because the MODX can also power a controller keyboard and pass midi through USB. Now I have the Wavestate setup with global midi channel 12. The MODX transmits program changes from any of the upper 8 parts (9-16) even though the MODX keyboard can't play those sounds, so I consistently send program changes from the MODX to the Wavestate on Ch 12. 1 patch per song obviously and making heavy use of the set lists on the MODX. Even better, is that I can get any of the 8 keyboard accessible parts on the MODX to play any of the 4 channels of the wavestate, so I can double up sounds if needed (rare with the MODX). But I can also do the reverse and have the Wavestate play whatever is on Ch 12 on the MODX as kind of a 5th layer. Just a little bit of programming but a lot of flexibility. Works for me 🙂

That's a great idea, and the Wavestate is a supremely flexible synth to do that with. You could even just use the joystick on the Wavestate to quickly move between different sounds in a song. I actually considered doing this as well...except the Wavestate is the one synth I own that locks up (crashes) more than any other. Fantom, I think I've locked it up once or twice, MODX and Montage have NEVER locked up, I've locked up the GAIA once or twice. But the Wavestate has crashed and/or locked up more times than I can count. I just wouldn't trust it in a live environment.

@@ScottsSynthStuff Wow - sorry to hear that your Wavestate locks up. Mine has never crashed, and it's switched on most of the time. BTW, I also found that with the MODX configured to use 5 pin midi cables both in and out to the Wavestate, I can still use the Keylab 49 into the "USB to Device" port on the MODX and it works to play any channel I set the Keylab to. I didn't expect that function to be available on the MODX when configured for 5 pin din cables.

I played live last Saturday with my Montage 6 🤩 I will apply some of the ideas on next gigs, thanks!!! BTW I use a K&M Spider Pro, which is really sturdy

Those K&M's are solid, even for a heavy board like the Montage.

I play live like this: One Yamaha cheap piano 3 sounds , sometimes adding strings to the pianos.

I want a Goldwing synth next year with flying capability.

I am using recently only column stands because they are not that massive, less space is needed ( in comparison to A stands) and they look good . Maybe they are not as sturdy but ...they are not flimsy as well.

It's got a lot of work to do. It has to listen to the beat, calculate the timing, average it over a few beats to make sure it's stable, then ramp the adjustment up or down, all without getting ahead or behind the beat.

@@ScottsSynthStuff For sure. The problem may be with the fantom. Mine struggles sometimes when overloaded with cc messages, same with my integra. That sync issue wouldn’t be great live. Really enjoy your videos. Thank you.

Great video. It's really strange the manufacturers don't put universal power supplies in all synths. I've checked my montage and sure enough it is only rated for Europe. It does use a switching power supply internally as well and I can't think of any excuse not to support anything from 100 to 240V. Not that it matters for me anyway :D

It used to be you could easily change the voltage of a synth by re-soldering a wire on the transformer in its internal power supply. Not anymore.

Honestly I have no idea! I picked it up at the local office store during the pandemic. It has no brand on it, but it is so comfortable that I actually bought two, one for my home office as well (where I work).

@@ScottsSynthStuff Thanks for getting back to me. Ya know, one of my favorite keyboard stands was INVISIBLE back in the 80's. It allowed the keyboards to have a low profile. Much like when Fender made the flat top Rhodes so you'd be able to put your Mini Moog on top, and you didn't see the stand. I hate stands so much these days that i'm getting the Viscount Compact. The top's flat and I'll be putting my Korg Pa5X right up there.

I have an Adam Hall SKS 22 column stand with cable routers, whose pair of supporting struts actually FOLD, you don't have to stow them away. Just bought and MODX+7 (for "Real Estate"). I'm going to use it with my faithfull cakewalk/Roland A800Pro that sports aftertouch, and can send any Midi/sysex message form any of its control. Its NINE sliders will be put to good use to manage element levels of the Yamaha Tonewheel organ "all NINE drawbars" performance. BTW I will need DI boxes, but you don't ! The fantom-0 as TRS outs, ie balanced, unlike MODX(+)

You're right - as I watched this video back I heard myself say that the Fantom-0 was unbalanced, but that's completely wrong - the Fantom-0 has balanced outs. That said, a DI box can solve a lot of noise problems, especially from ground loops that you may not have any other control over on stage.

*I* even got tired of watching it. But I noticed in the KZread analytics, that as soon as that longer intro ran, I consistently lost around 20% of viewers. People HATE intros, and the fickle KZread audience bails almost immediately. I was going to skip the intro completely, but then decided on this quick and dirty one. I just played an arp on the Hydrasynth and threw it on the logo zoom. I thought, "I'll redo the sound later"....but I haven't yet. :)

Although it's been a long time since I played a gig, I enjoyed this review. I am curious though why some synths feel the need to have lighted keys flashing in a sequence like the Roland System 8 and the Hydrasynth. Interesting but can also be a little distracting.

It's when it's in "sleep mode" and it's just for fun, I think to make it stand out in the store maybe? I've never come across one where you couldn't turn that off if you wanted.

Go into the part edit page for the part containing the arpeggio, click on the element Common Edit tab, then the Arpeggio Tab, and the General page, make sure Arpeggio Hold is enabled.

I looked it up, and you're 100% correct. Not only that....the replacement stand that Sweetwater sent me was ALSO a return, as it was already assembled when I got it. I have contacted them about this.

Wow I have been researching about the Fantom Os for some time and it's only now that I came to know that you could have a MIDI keyboard connected and let it be controlled by the Fantom O Edit: I'm kind of a noob so I'd like to know- Do you think if I get an Arturia Keylab MK2, it could do the same thing as your Novation? It should work exactly the same way. I don't know if the sliders on the Keylab can be mapped to individual CC's, but assuming they can, then I think you should be able to map them to the sliders on the Fantom to control the drawbars on the tonewheel organ.

How do you compare Montage and Fantom 06 in terms of controlling a DAW/VST? is there any funtion that one of the keyboard can do and not the other? I am consedering replacing my Korg PA4x to have better midi control and have knobs instead of faders to control VST filters... Thanks.

4:33 I have some sequences but they are not that long and I simply hold the key down and trigger the key again later on another bar at the beginning of the beat. I can't imagine a super long sequence but I guess there are some. 23:07 it looks like Ultimate Support stand has gotten shabby . Mine is really good and sturdy. I have an old one and its got a flat top. It looks like you have a bolt on top?!?! I put another synth rack module on top and fasten it to the top keyboard with earth magnets. It doesn't move. Then I have 2 keyboards driving the top synth for a total of 4 sounds at once with 2 hands. But I mainly do it just to have multiple sounds that are unique to each synth.

does the modx6 have the possibily to route click on a different output like phone output? So that i can route click to drummer and sequences in the main output

No, for that kind of capability you have to move up to the Montage. That said, you could have a laptop connected to the MODX, and route audio from the MODX over several tracks via USB into the laptop. If you then had multiple audio outputs on the laptop (like an outboard audio interface), you could do it that way.

Sorry if the question is too silly, but how you determine how high you need your lower keyboard while playing standing? I always try to get the same angle as when I´m sitting, but don´t know if that´s correct.

Not a silly question at all! I don't know if there is a correct answer - for me it's trial and error. I try something, if it turns out to be awkward, or makes me sore, then I move it, until I've got it right - then I mark the position so I don't forget!

is it good to use a DJ mixer for synths :)?

It's not going to be ideal, but it also depends on the application. Performing live, along with the DJ perhaps? You're probably ok. Using it at home to record? You're probably not going to get the most wonderful sound. Most DJ mixers are also not going to be able to handle balanced audio.

Hey Scott, ever considerd a novation SL mk 3 as controller? It's a 8 parts controller with arp and sequencer per cannel. You will deffenatly heard about it. Just being curious on how it could end up in your setup with the montage or modx. super video. Cheers from Belgium. Keep up the good work! 😊

@@MuLtI1970_MIDI_channel I did, but I wanted something a bit smaller, and those only come in 49 key. I also don't have need of sequencers or arpeggiators in what I'll be playing live - it's all playing by hand. Also, for the Montage and MODX, the sequencer built into it is far more capable and complex than on a controller.

@@Tirisfaldnb A lot of electronic musicians use (high end) DJ mixers for their live sets. It will work very well in your case (1xElektron & 3xOther synths). Also nowadays many DJ do have balance or even xlr inputs, contrary to what @Scott said in the comment above.

I use a midi controller with MOXF in a live setup. It's not nearly that easy to setup as with that Roland.
