PLAYGROUND- making-of

Thank you so much for all your kind messages!
Here is a making of Playground, I tried showing the different steps of each shot and how some ideas designs changed from the first rough to the final shot. All the animation/ animatic was made on tvpaint, backgrounds on photoshop and post-production on After effects/ Premiere. Music and sound design was made by the fantastic Jérémy Ben Ammar more of his stuff here: linktr.ee/jeremybenammar
Some info on the project Playground is a concept trailer for a feature film that doestnt exist yet. I'm a franco-portuguese artist living in Paris and I did this short in my freetime during 6 months, outside of my work in the animation industry (animation, layout, storyboard, concept art). Because of the visibility this short had, I had the enormous luck of being contacted by some people that can make this into a real thing .
I am now working on writing and developing the story, characters and universe. I am still in the beggining of development so I don't have dates yet but I will let you know as soon as possible. As for funding I'm talking with streamers and studios seeing what's the best way to make this project happen. It would be cool also to make a horror game in this universe but maybe later...
Subscribe or follow me on instagram for more news about the project! I will let you know about the next steps ! Thank you again all for the all the kind messages, I try to read them all!

This is genuinely some Renaissance-level content. It is just impossible to believe all of that was animated by just 1 person, and even 6 months looks too little for this animation. It's surely a ton of work but damn it will be so sad if it gets canceled, yet I believe that it will come out and it will turn out epic Unbelievable

You don't understand how much I've been longing for this specific type of horror. The type of horror that created a small part of my childhood and a big part of my teenhood. It's just how you blend the different moods together that just really makes this sooooo intriguing. Like the fear, with some joy, with the horror, the cuteness, but especially this odd feeling of it being really liminal. It also reminds me of just growing up in general, like a concept. Like this is a phase everyone goes through in the process of childhood. I honestly love it

123 Soleil actually is the french name for the game red light, green light. So I am guessing the shiny head represents the sun (or the redlight) when you dont move, and the not lit side of its face represents 123 (or greenlight, when you can move). I am guessing the monster punishes children who get caught moving and explodes their heads.

Easily one of the most stunning upcoming projects in years. This is going to be remembed for a long, long time as a seminal example of childhood horror--not going the cheap and easy route of yet ANOTHER five nights at freddies clone or "dora the explorer except its evil", but instead actively choosing to take into consideration how we feel about experiences we had growing up and relating them to horror--the panic of getting stuck in the rope mazes, a roller-coaster going too fast, the way indoor pools for swimming lessons always felt a little slimy on the floor, ceramic dolls and puppets lookin menacing for some reason... Genuine genius. I cannot wait to see what you do next with Playground!

I am so happy for you and I am so inspired by this film. When I read the description I got so exited to see you got contacted by someone that can make this a reality. I can wait to see the final product because it’s going to be an even bigger master piece. Thank you, and a game on this would be insane, my school mates and I have a dream of making an indie game company and if we ever succeed at that it would be interesting working on the game. Of course maybe I am dreaming to much regardless of who makes the game it’s going to be so good. I support you all the way on anything you wanna do. Have a good day!

Words cannot describe the beauty, the grotesque, and the odd familiarity as it pictures a twisted playground. The monsters has such fluidity and they just make you uncomfortable but you just keep watching as each of them are so creative. My favorites were the spider creature and the mask beast (I don’t know the official names). I liked the creativity of the spider creature where it would send out little minions to catch it’s prey and would linger around the little bar area as if it is a spider web and the mask beast thing would turn it’s own head and turn victim head’s to confetti! That is horrifying as one look from that thing just makes you dead. No blood, no nothing just dies. I hope this idea goes far. Truly it has huge amounts of love in it.

Okay as someone who rarely comments I have to say you did a OUTSTANDING JOB!. I mean where do I even begin, the background, the character designs, the sound production etc. Everything in this one video has the potential to be a genuinely well rounded and incredibly freighting series. The childhood esthetic combined with the uncomfortable and grotesque designs of the insects and otherworldly monsters adds a layer of familiarity and anxiety that I haven't seen in most horror media tbh. The story even has a lot of potential and possiblity to be desired and could even explore a lot of heavy themes through patience and nuance. As someone who hasn't drawn in almost two years due to personal problems I have to say you made me want to start doing something I'm passionate about again because your efforts and talents to make such a genuinely outstanding idea has made me and many other people happy to see and appreciate. I'm very excited to see what you'll do in the future or even what you'll do right now but, I hope you can take time and build the world but by bit to make a fully fledged idea into a phenomenal piece of work or even a mini series could work!. Anyway I hope you have a good day or night 10/10 Gold Star ✨ ⭐✨

Making a cartoon or movie, short, trailer, concept etc. Having it "blow up" on KZread and then getting reached out to mak it a reality?! THAT'S what KZread as a platform should be about. Making animators dreams become a reality. So glad that something is in the works now because this trailer is incredible and you deserve it. But sadly many animators don't have such luck thanks too what the algorithm pushes. But seeing this, helluva boss, Murder Drones, Monkey Wrench, and a few others getting some footing to produce more (more then others) I am hoping its a continual shift in KZread to bring artists back to the forefront! Also seeing the concepts for some of these is so amazing! Whats better then a final product? Seeing the process that lead to said final product!! Love seeing the face designs for that rotating light face creature whatever its named!

Man. I don’t think I’ve seen a project before where the first draft ideas are _of equal quality_ as the final stuff. That’s a feat and a _half_ you’ve pulled off, right there.

This is SO cool. I love this grotesque style of horror where instead of just using shock elements you've actually designed some really, REALLY creepy and unsettling monsters. I can't wait to see where this project goes!

More people need to appreciate animation, the work your doing + the result; like you couldn’t do this with live action and have it still be as awesome. I’m so excited to see where this goes, even if it has a half assed story as long as I get to see some nightmare fuel stuff.

PLEASE, animation is so hard to tell horror with sometimes since it’s so hard to capture fear, but this is un ironically some of the best and most unsettling designs I’ve seen. Some bugs have faces to intimidate predators, so this one has eyes on its back, it’s so disturbing and incredible, and I can relate to the guy in the pool hard. A24 picked up hazbin from KZread, picked up back rooms from KZread, this is like a cross between them and I would give half of my organs to see this in beautiful action

the monster designs intrigue me cause you can tell which used to be human like someone before the kids shown in the scenes but what disturbs me a little about the ones that looked more human they look like adults so this gets me interested about this and its lore about the monsters and i love how some monster designs are designed around some real world stuff

this is so cool and interesting! and i love how simple the story boards were and then BOOM! sudden perfection, i love how complicated but memorable the designs are, and yet the designs that are simple are still cute and fit into the world perfectly! i love it whenever i see "child things turned horror" done properly. and when i look at this i can feel it actively changing my brain chemistry! I cant imagine how long it all took, and it feels almost refreshing to see this fluent animation, and I can hardly imagine how long this took. I also love how its not just "mascot gone scary", this is just so nice! and I know other people aren't huge fans of the trope but I most definitely am, I'm so excited to see more! I literally can't praise it enough!!

When the creature's head spins round, it's that extra bit of motion where it goes just a fraction of a centimeter too far before rolling moving back a tiny bit the other way back to center. It adds so much weight to the movement vs if it just stopped in the final position.

Words cannot describe how overjoyed i am to see the behind-the-scenes of this! The rough animation looks so cool and I LOOOVE seeing your rough storyboard sketches and ideas; it's a great reminder to keep my own thumbnails loose and not get lost in unneeded details--i LOOOOVE the Playground world and creatures; the trailer is mind-blowingly good and the world is so haunting. i LOVE it! and I can't ever get tired of listening to this perfect music!
