People covering this song struggle with those consecutive kicks so they use floor toms. When I tried covering this song it was difficult but I could make it... Now I can do it with my single chain pedal and also my DynaSync... It was a learning experience because I tried so hard....but in the end, it doesn't even matter.

I would say that the thing is... Rob doesnt play the bass drum that way, at least live. If you hear it during live shows, he will play it by doing two strokes only. Not in that repetitive way like this video is showing. And he also plays the snare by doing some ghost notes with his left hand and the right hand is for hihat and accents on the snare Its up to the drummer anyways 🤷♂

Honestly, Rob Bourden is incredibly underrated and super talented. I've seen a lot of Linkin Park live performances, and I don't think I've ever really seen him falter. Dude is a damn machines. And the way he took the midi drum tracks that Mike gave him and translated them to a real drum kit is amazing.

What a cool idea you've got here. Thanks for sharing. This shows new drummers the simple fact that yes, YOU CAN PLAY DRUMS, and it does not have to be exact. I'm 50 now. At 9 years old, it was a record player, headphones, and much frustration. We couldn't afford lessons, so I joined a band at 12 and learned in a band setting. I wish I had this back then.
What a classic song and a timeless sound from Linkin Park. Legends.
I bought an Alesis Surge Mesh SE kit a few months ago with a Simmons DA50B 50watt drum amp/speaker and these 5 steppers are fun to watch. Been years since I played to where I knew what I was doing, so getting back into it again.
Playing that groove with single pedal is definetly way more fun that playing it with a double pedal 🔥
I was looking to buy an Electronic kit so I can play at home more, but having played only on acoustic kits for 16 years got me really hesitant. Hearing this kit might've finally pushed me over the edge.
Fantastic! I love these "5 levels" videos! Seeing this makes me think even *I* could start playing drums again! :) Thanks for posting!

If you used to enjoy it and you miss it, by all means start playing again! Like he mentioned, e-kits have gotten relatively cheap and are much quieter than the real thing, so it's be less annoying to anyone else around if you're using headphones.

I’m between the 3/4. I’ve only been playing drums for almost 10 months. I play on an electric drum set. Thanks! Always love these types of videos 👍🏻
I know acoustic drums have some advantages over electric. But the electric drums are so good these days, and can get multiple sounds, like guitar plugins, you can play different and loud sounds but other people barely hear them in other rooms. You can play them all night long without bothering anyone.

Rob actually plays only 1 and 1a (and the 3+) on the bass drum when playing this live - i.e., no 5 in a row, not even a double (at least during the verse). Both the recording and during the live performance Rob plays most of the e's and a's as snare ghost notes (I have the drums-only stem from the album recording uploaded on my channel if you are curious). I am not entirely certain, but I believe Rob does not even play the 5 consecutive notes on the album recording either - it's likely a sample added on top of the actual drum recording (LP is known for doing a lot of drum sampling on top of the recording, and Rob is known to not use a double-pedal).

Pretty cool how you showed 5 different levels to play on a single song.
Alright time to binge watch another series! Seriously this is great. I barely have any independence at all and I can play level 1. Also, this e-kit sounds really good. They've come a long way since my dad played in a church worship band on one. It sounds way more like real drums
I was thinking exactly about it today morning doing my workouts listening this song :) Great, thanks for sharing
Love this! Hoping to hit level 3.
I thought I was a level 5 I have been playing for about 45 . But I got to tell you this one got me. The five bass drum beat. Not 12345 but 1234 all the rest and then you at the 5 with the first four. Mind blowing.
Thanks for sharing all of the methods to play this song.
I heard an isolated drum track from this song recently that kind of blew my mind. There's actually quite a few ghost notes in there on the snare that I had never noticed in almost 25 years of loving this album.
Thank you Brandon!
Great vid thanks. Always found him a strange drummer. Cliche but underated and def played the part really well. As did all members of the band.
One of my favorite instruments is the percussion, which is how I learned, "I'm your puppet." I could mimic, maybe, your footwork with the cow bell...😂😂😂 I like watching your instruction, great job.

Strange, I never thought of this as a complex song. I am now corrected. Good stuff!
Those successive kick drums in the verses of In The End are actually not played that way by Rob Bourdon. Mike Shinoda edited them in during the mixing/mastering process. Rob’s final drum take without those kicks added in can be heard on the unmastered final version here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eaqttbyYgbmsnpM.html
Also playing on an e kit . Great to see it here❤
yeah that kick pattern is challenging, nice man!!

I think anything would be fine for something like this. This might be something tricky for someone at a particular level, but it's not really tricky in the grand scheme of things. You could do this with a lower-quality pedal and well-practiced technique :)

I put my trust, in you. Pushing (ed) as far I could go For all this, there's only one thing you should know is that I'll rock this song on a drum one day.
Nice electronic set. I have a set and world like to upgrade some day.
The level four though is actually played at 2 strokes in the beginning. listen carefully during Live Aid 2005, Rock Am Ring 2001 and other performances. you can hear Rob playing that part differently than the recording itself.
Bring Rob Bourdon to make some good videos with the man. He is an inspiration for many drummers.
than you so much ❤
I use two hats (one closed, one open for the barks) and a double pedal for consistency.
Thank you for this interesting video and you work in general! 😄 I was a bit surprise on this one, I always thought the Charleston was accentuated on off-beats (on the & of 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &, I don't know how you say in english) in the original song. Is it only me ?
I have a question. How do I set up my pedal the best for fast paced kicks? Should I set it very loose or should I set rather strict?

Personally I like it as tight as it will go because the beater returns more quickly, but I think it comes down to preference at the end of the day. Experiment with the different tensions and find what fits

I set mine about 70-90% tight and have it a little angled to my left. That way my foot is sticking crooked to the right so I can bend it to the left and move it a little right for every hit. And I have my seat about as high as it’ll go.
I would love to see you guys do a video breaking down how and why Rob Bourdon is a genius on the drums. And to get him on the channel itself, doing a playthrough of Linkin Park songs, a first time listen to a song, and attempt to play it in his own way. 11/10 video
I'll try today
Somehow level 4 is for me more difficult than level 5. When I was learning 4/4 oscinatos on kick drum I was practicing 4 16th note kick already many times. That pattern is not that difficult but it requires a bit endurance. But level 4 is getting me around the independence issue and odd time zones. Still not too difficult but I need to practice that.
Rob Bourdon should join this channel.
Level 4 for me. I'm not smooth enough on the bass drum to make more than 2 consecutive hits. Also, e-drum represent with EFNOTE 7.
👍👍👍
I have never played drums in my entire life but I am dead sure you still have 2 more levels to go
That's a very cool drumset, can anyone tell me what model is he using?
Wish I had the space for a kit like that. Maybe the next place me and the other half moves too...
Man, i wish KZread was as it is now when I was "in a band", and learning the drums. It was from 2005- early 2009. And i haven't had a drum set in over 10 years now, but back in those days, while KZread existed, it wasn't anywhere near what it is now. I would have been a much better drummer if I had Drumeo back then. Instead, everything I did was self taught. And i did so much wrong, including how I held my sticks 😂😂.. My son (12, about to be 13) is having the experience i wish i would've had growing up. He plays percussion in Band in school. So he's been taught how to do things correctly, so one day when/if he decides he wants to play the drums, he won't be starting from scratch.
That's tuff
Can we use a double pedal on this specific kit?
Rob bourdon is so underrated
Learning this again with the double pedal was a cheat code.
What about a Deftones song? Around The Fur would be a nice one.
Slide 👌👏!!! 👋
👍👍
But Rob only played the level 5 in studio, he played level 4 instead on live performances, maybe because LP usually played this in the middle or near the end of the set. Still a great drummer tho, really tight but still groovy, love his beats on tracks like Little Things Give You Away, Final Masquerade, and Iridescent (that little ostinato tho, I haven't seen anyone covered it and played like Rob).
Just curious would it have been easier to do 5 base kicks on the double base? Genuinely enough curious. Don’t do a lot of double base because I don’t have a double pedal…… sorry if the question seems stupid. I’m still stuck between level 2 and 3 overall…..

It's quite easy to play it this way, but you can't play closed and open hihat in one go like in original (only all closed or all open)
EXCELLENT SERIES! check out the Mandala V3 drum pads designed by Synesthesia and Danny Carey. Level 1 shud be called Rockband or wankstar lol
Please make a video about Bill bruford!!!! Please!!!
I play an electric set I built myself through different components and use a ddti trigger interface and a computer with cakewalk and I went to the converted brass practice cymbals, they feel great playing - I also use a full size bass and pedal, my goal is to be able to switch to an acoustic kit and it feel pretty close to the same - my hardest and most aggravating thing playing drums is mastering the bass pedal - I am going to see if drumeo has a video on that. Some people say tighten the springs up for quicker response some say loosen, and if I have it right I double tap when I don’t want to and if it’s loose it just feels like I’m stepping on wet concrete
do "Break" by Three Days Grace!
Where can I download music from?
But that's the thing, rob doesn't play those 5 kicks everytime(it's like every other)still a cool groove and one of my favorite songs to jam on drums(the lock in is incredible 😎👌)i'm level 5 and i play it on my roland v drums(wish i could play my acoustic kit but where i live now i can't cuz of the noise, the rebiunds are so much better)still i love that i can still play drums almost everyday.
You guys should do a genius episode of Rob bourdon
This kinda emulates the programmed drums, which is cool, but Rob's actual drum part is very different, less bass drum and quite a lot of ghost notes on the snare
