Found you through your interview with Allyson Lyne in her "Rock Your Strings" three-day workshop. I enjoyed your spot a LOT. I grew up singing three-part harmony with my dad and my older sister. I usually got to be the third voice, because I could hear it. I have always thought in chords, even before I knew what to call them. My background is vocal/choral music. But when I turned 65, I picked up the violin for the first time and decided to teach myself through internet resources, partly because my voice is failing me. One reason I loved your interview: I have never heard a teacher express my own philosophy about music so clearly. I have heard too much advice to NOT experiment with my violin, because I could "pick up habits that are hard to correct." Well, duh. Isn't learning based on being curious and learning through trial and error what works and what doesn't? I know I can learn from a teacher who has much more experience than I, but NOTHING can replace my own experimenting with my violin to find out what sounds it makes - learning how and why something sounds scratchy can be just as valuable as learning how and why something sounds smooth and resonant. Your advice about improvising within parameters and guided by what you are already capable of made my heart soar. THAT is where I have always found creativity to lie.
