    I had a mentor who did phenol peels on her face, neck, shoulders, and arms over the course of 7 months. She’d spent the last 30 years working outdoors in a time before daily sunscreen was a thing, had severe sun damage, and was covered in precancerous spots. So the oncology specialist dermatologist she was seeing recommended phenol peels to get ahead of possibly widespread skin cancer. They sent her to a cardiologist for clearance before they started and did one area at a time, then the next a month later. She luckily didn’t have any serious complications, but she looked terrible and had to switch to part time indoor work for the duration. Last I heard from her she was 2 years out, free from any concerning spots, and looked easily 20 years younger than when she’d had the peels done. For her, the risk and the bother was outweighed by stopping skin cancer, but for most people it’s way too much.

    @mylifewithmarmalade4624

    Ай бұрын

    @@argarman09 I have limited details on that, and it was almost a decade ago, so things may have changed. I do know they kept her at the hospital for several hours after each procedure to make sure she wasn’t going to have any severe life threatening complications. They did send her home with prescribed pain meds for the first two weeks after each procedure. She said it was like having the worst sunburn of your life. She would take two weeks off after each peel and spent most of it apparently keeping cool wet compresses on the treated area, sleeping, and watching TV. She’d be back at work after those two weeks for two weeks until the next area was done. She had to be very careful to stay out of the sun and even away from windows, couldn’t get too hot or cold, or do any sort of heavy physical activity, had to drink lots of extra water, take tepid showers, and couldn’t use anything on the skin soap/lotion/cosmetics wise other than what the doctor had given her to use for a full month after. Apparently the idea is that you want to avoid any irritation or inflammation of the treated skin. The worst of the pain and peeling was apparently those first two weeks but she said it felt slightly sunburned for a good 2 months after. Looked it too. She was very pink and a bit puffy even 2 weeks out coming back to work. So yeah, not for the faint of heart, and definitely need to be able to afford the downtime to do nothing and go nowhere for at least 2 weeks, and deal with a lot of limitations and not looking or feeling great for a month or more. So logistically it isn’t something everyone can afford. Her husband was very supportive and happy to take care of her and everything else for a while, and our employer at the time knew she was half the reason the company hadn’t folded long before. They also knew that occupational sun exposure was the primary reason she needed the treatment in the first place. So they were happy to work with her and make sure she had the (albeit unpaid) time to take care of what she needed to do.

  • @adarcus4053
    @adarcus4053Ай бұрын

    Exactly one time I trusted a spa to do a facial on me. I had gone there many times before for massages nails and other stuff and it always had a flawless experience. This was not an extreme peel, it was all surface level products and my skin was so angry so red and so inflamed for 3 days afterwards. The resultant under an hours worth of work was the equivalent of if I had only put water on my face for 2 weeks and had to neglected my entire skin care routine. My skin was so dry and flaky and tight and itchy. I normally put on a thicker moisturizer in the evening and a more lightweight one in the morning and am fine. I had to put Vaseline all over my face three to four times a day because I physically couldn't put enough moisture on my face to calm it. I also couldn't use any of my other products like toners or ampules because they just made the situation worse. My skin is notoriously problematic for me I have to treat it consistently and with great caution sensitivity. This misadventure was a painful but important lesson I've not forgotten. I was so upset at how much damage was done in under an hour. While I still love massages, body scrubs and all of that good jazz I would likely never trust anybody to do a facial again outside of myself. I might consider it if it's a licensed esthetician and we have a serious in-depth conversation about what I I want done and what I do not want done and how my skin behaves.

I just turned 43 and I do not look my age. I couldn't image doing THIS to my skin. The pros of this treatment does not outweigh the cons in my opinion. But, to each their own. You know, I'm a huge horror buff. Really into darker themes and seeing just how f'ed up the human mind can go on a psychological level, especially when it isn't just a "what if" but something someone actually did/attempted. This made me queasy AF and actually managed to make me pause and step away. So this a big nope. I spend most of my days convincing clients to accept and love themselves as drastic changes generally only look natural in your head and unnatural to damaging in reality. One of my favorite KZreadrs turned Streamer who became a mother recently said something in a PodCast that warmed my heart, "I'm excited to get laugh lines." Something so small to be stated that I wish more people could see the beauty in. We're all going to age, and eventually die. The fear of ageing is extreme-- and while I'm all for taking care of your skin to make it take longer or even reduce more intense signs, but we should also learn to accept that it will happen. Something like a phenol peel is just too far.
