You need to drill small drain holes at the lowest point. At some point water will get in and then just sit there and spread mold. The clear plastic cover is a great idea for when it's outside and completely exposed (no roof, etc) but it's best to substitute the rear two screws holding it for a bolt mechanism so you can remove them without tools and tip the cover forward to make cleaning easier.
