PlantStrong Legacy: 12 Years of Wellness

In 2010, Rip Esselstyn traveled to a small dairy town called Mercersburg, Pennsylvania - pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Rip had been invited by the local town doctor, Liz George MD, who wanted his help convincing her patients to adopt a plantstrong diet. She felt she could get a lot of them much healthier - and off medications - if they would do change their diet. Jeff and Willie Nelson (of VegSource) went along with Rip to film what happened. As you will see, Rip encouraged towns people to go plantstrong for 28 days, since they could get much healthier in that timeframe. 12 years later, we decided to catch up with the group, and see whether they were still being impacted by what they had learned.

January 1st 2020, I was introduced to Rip and his amazing family, after watching Forks Over Knives. I was 26 with a resting blood pressure of 145/90. Not long before, I had come to learn that my father was diagnosed with an enlarged heart - I saw the path I was heading down, and realized that seeing that documentary came at a perfect time in my life. I’m almost 30 years old, life has been a bit rocky, but everyday that I wake up, I’m thankful to have my #1 asset on a much better track. Now my blood pressure sits around a comfortable 110/69, and I’m hoping to keep it there or lower it more in time. I’m not sure where life will take me, but wherever I go, and whatever I do, I will always be thankful to people like Rip, and his amazing family. Thank you so much Rip, Essie, Ann, and Jane. You’re changing lives. Thank you so much Jeff for bringing this together.

Excellent! I am so happy and grateful to be 100% plant-based. It has changed my life in so many positive ways. No longer pre-diabetic, now enjoying normal blood pressure, total cholesterol dropped from 263 to 168, lost 35 pounds that needed to go, inflammatory aches and pains gone. I LOVE the food and the lifestyle! Thank you to you, Jeff, and Rip and all the wonderful plant-based advocates. You are positively changing a world that sorely needs changing!

I was obese all of my life. I would lose and gain for years. I have lost 57 lbs with 20 lbs to go and never hungry. I don't crave bad sweets. Usually I would've been on my way back up to over 200 lbs at 5' 2" tall. My cholesterol was 230. My doctor sent a prescription of statins for me to take. Changing my way of eating never came out of her mouth, but I was watching every video and reading every book about healing with plants. I never took the pills and my cholesterol levels went down so much. I am 63 years old I have so much energy. More than my kids or grandkids. I'm sure my cholesterol is even lower now.

Here’s my story as I’ve been on the carnivore diet eating good quality meats, grass fed grass finished and my arthritic pain was a daily 6-7 and after going WFPB SOS for a month my pain is now a 1-2 and I’m able to walk normally. Funny thing is my m finding doctors telling me differently. Well I’m listening to my body so thanks for all you do

I really admire these people for being willing to take the challenge. When we see the dramatic, positive impact that eating plants, has on our health, it becomes easier to embrace this way if eating. Happened to me in 1997 and I'm still plant strong!.

Rip's ideas worked for me. I am an imperfect follower, but got tremendous results. I halved my total cholesterol (formerly 291), LDL now below 100, A1C well below diabetic threshold and triglycerides 64 (should be below 150). Bad family history, My tastes really did change. The most important change I made was to cut out the CRAP (Jeff Novick's acronym for "calorie rich and processed"). That was key to reduce cravings.

Incredibly inspiring. I just love going to my overweight non plant based doctor and showing him my blood work that is perfect, regardless of my past triple bypass surgery, Type 1 Diabetes and all the pills that I was forced by the hospital to take after my surgery. He is truly amazed every time, but sadly not flexible enough to try to make that difference for himself and promote the idea to his patients who are sadly brainwashed into thinking that "old age" is the root cause of their health issues. Thank you Rip and VegSource for always working hard to spread this good word. Cheers! M

I eat very high carb very low fat, no overt fats at all. As low fat as you get. My total cholesterol was 184 and LDL 106 on my last blood test. Ironically, I had many total cholesterol numbers below 150 when I wasn't 100% plant based but still very low fat. While 100% plant based, I've always been between 160-200, never under 150.
