Plants Tier List! (ONI: Spaced Out!)

I have about 1800 hours of experience playing Oxygen Not Included and thought it would be a good idea to make a tier list of which Plants I tend to prioritise finding, harvesting, and farming. This is quite a subjective list where I'm ranking the plants mostly based on how much I go out of my way to acquire them or their seeds early on, and how much they influence the development of the colony. I factor in early game use cases as well as the sustainability and efficiency of the plant into the midgame and late-game, as well as how some plants directly compete with close rivals, such as between the Sleet Wheat and the Nosh Sprout. Now that the Song of the Moo Update has come out and Gas Grass is a bit more useful as an option, I thought it would be a good moment to produce this video. As many plants are grown directly for food, this tier list interacts a lot with my previous video here: • Food Tier List! (ONI: ... . I should say my opinion on Nosh Sprouts has improved since then, as I've found them a bit easier and more worthwhile to grow than previously thought.
Let me know if you have any comments on this list! I'm keen to see if you've managed to get Gas Grass and Nosh Sprouts to really shine, or if you've had any unusual builds with plants like the very versatile Arbor Tree or the elusive Saturn Critter Trap. If you want to see more of this kind of content, feel free to like the video, and subscribe if you want to see more similar content in future.

    Critters tier list next?

Absolutely! But I want to get some more experience with a few of them before doing that, particularly Pokeshells, Shove Voles, and Gassy Moos, as I haven't tried ranching these yet, and the tier list will depend partly on how easy it is to set up a ranch for a critter that can easily be fully automated (like a Pacu farm, for instance). I've put a thread on the Discord for active discussion for the critter tier list; if anyone has any critter ranch builds they'd like to show off or any other thoughts, feel free to post them here: discord.com/channels/948585735273992212/1131855033084952616

One word reason why Pincha Pepper nut is S tier: "COFFEE!" +4 morale +10% runspeed. Add on soda for another +4 morale and +10% levelling speed. No one plants Sporechids because they need to. You plant them IN ROCKETS for decor because you can.

I started playing the small maps DLC on radiation swamp map with a frozen core (ravenous settings) I have come to appreciate having three ranchers/farmers for the first time ever. I have one glossy Dreckos one Dreckos one hatch one sage hatch and two pip ranches. The pips have wild planted arbors so it’s free food. The dreckos as well. The rest use up resources. I have so much fiber and plastic. Also I’ve setup arbor trees from an infectious polluted geyser for ethanol for dirt and constant energy. Finally I have 15 sleet wheat and 38 bristle blossoms feeding 12 dupes. First time ever I’ve had to experiment so much. This is now my favorite path to go. I didn’t have access to thimble reed in three starting planets. I had to do the dreckos/balm lily route. In 1,000 cycles I have almost 3,000 fibers. I’ve never had this much in 2,000 hours played lol

Balm Lily are useful for producing tons of seeds with little to no cost or maintenance by just setting them up in a room with auto sweepers and shipping the seeds out which can be useful for feeding large numbers of pacu if you don't want to burn other seed types, though honestly seeds are stupidly easy to get after the initial dozen or so cycles.

Can I just say I pipe in 40 C water into my plants. I use TATs to cool down a diamond tile wall underneath the planters. It does a good job in feeding it hot water but keeping the plant itself cold. Idk how efficient it is but I’ve got 1 million berry sludge in about 15 cycles lol One tip people might not know use wheeze worts on slime infected with slimelung. Set up tiles next to the slime before digging it up. In about a quarter of a cycle it kills the slimelung. You could technically dig the whole map with zero germs on it. Now you have clean slime which can be transported anywhere without infecting dupes.

Regarding the chlorine plants, I have a vent in my map so just cool the output with a single Wheezewort and send it to feed the 22 (or so) Dasha's. It's seeds go to the Pacu farm, and the salt/sand is always nice to have. I used to use a whole lot of Balm Lilies to feed Pacus but then replaced it with Dasha's because of the sand. Also, I have a single Sporechid seed sitting majestically on a pedestal, while the other two seeds that I had I've feed to the Pacus simply as a way giving a middle finger to the game universe.

Drekos are amazing, as they are food, reed fiber and can be bred into glossy drekos, which produce an insane amount of plastic, which I think makes balm lillies quite a solid B tier, especially because they require no foor when domesticated

An interesting thing about the zombie spore disease is that if you want to train your duplicants it's actually faster for the to have zombie spores, due to the exp for leveling skills is how long they take to complete a task and not doing the task itself.

I disagree with sporechid even without biobots. You can find 6-12 in the first 3 asteroids, it's not too hard to create a liquid lock and dig them out in atmo suit. You can plant them between the barracks and great hall with glass windows in vacuum then just close the room and pump in some carvon dioxide. They give insane decor probably enough for the whole day in an industrial brick. My great hall has 1300 decor and a significant part comes from sporechids, and its much easier decor bomb then tropical pacus or artifact spamming just do not accidentally destruct the windows.

I've recently started using wild-grown saturn critter traps to produce hydrogen and they work an absolute charm, especially in conjuction with an ATN. Bees aren't actually eaten by them, so you can use that system to cool the radioactive biome no problem.

In Spaced Out, Balm Lilies can get the Licey plant mutation, which causes them to drop 600kcal of Meal Lice every harvest. Because Balm Lilies don't use any fertilizer it is free from a material standpoint. Francis John used a massive plantation of these to feed the Isoresin tree.

With Packed Snacks and Biobot Builder, the Sporechid produces a ridiculous amount of labor. I’ve got 8 Sporechid in a room with 2 gas pumps and have 9-10 Biobots running around all the time doing supply and sweep stuff. Not the worst plant anymore for sure.

it put mushroom in A , 1 they are fairly easy to setup , space efficient , can be fertalised (unlike mealwood) and consume niche weaste product and not a lot of it , on most asteroids you get a lot slime and they are easiest way to dispose it while making food , and mushroom kiche is one of top foods , eggs are easy as you get them from ranching , and you can get salad from wild farming salad , and just farm mushroom and you get top tier food with little to no changes in your base , while indeed britsle berry and wheet is king of space food or shipping to asteroids where "i cant bother setting fridge" especialy now food has to be deep frozen to not spoil , but for main base quiche seams like easiest food long term , yeah eventualy you will runout but if you just use slime maily for mushroom , you gono run out in 15k? cycle or further also they consume very little of slime , bristle berries are great but that hefty 20kg of water is hefty so i try just wild farm them for the "unspoilable food needs" and use it sparingly

With this one Arbortrees are S-tier. I actually feel they are overpowered. Once I get to the late game I feel I need to consciously avoid Arbortrees because they make sustainable loops too easy. The amount of polluted dirt they produce is crazy, you get polluted water co2, and dirt. Though I do understand that you are basing this more on the earlier game.

I think I am probably going to come to the same conclusion once I get to that point in Arboreal Airheads. But yeah, I think in terms of early game, I would still prioritise Thimble Reeds first if they were available, and then Arbor Trees after.

If you run the hot water/salt water output directly to your plants (even sleet wheats) using insulated pipes, and then just cool the plants themselves with a cooling loop, you won't have any stifling issues. So cooling geyser output for that is not necessary.

  • @erisia_gaming

Yeah sticking with Meal Lice is honestly very strong, IF you have the Dirt for it and don't mind the lack of Food quality and the large amount of space it takes up relative to other plants. I actually didn't consider that you just need Lead and Glass for Lead Suits and that they function very similarly to Atmo Suits for trained dupes. I think Reed Fiber is still very useful for paintings, carpets, and clothes for Decor and stress reduction, and you do still eventually need it for Insulation, but you could definitely consider just outright using Lead Suits instead for some playthroughs. The Lead Suit docks are also very large which may make them more difficult to fit into bases.

The recent update added a building called the Bleach Stone Hopper that lets you convert Salt and a little bit of Gold into 1/3 Bleach Stone and 2/3 Sand. So you can boil your Salt Water Geyser with a Gold Volcano and potentially get a lot of Bleach Stone going.
