Just a tip my father taught me when growing potatoes . When your potatoe plant start blooming if you pinch off the blooms if puts more growth into the potatoes instead of the plant . I've did this for years . He would have been 113 this yr .

Laura sometimes talks about how certain plants give her nostalgia. For me it is planting potatoes. My dad would walk down the row of freshly tilled soil and toss the seed potatoes and I would follow behind with my bare feet and step on them to bury them in the soil. I remember the smell of the garden and the cool dirt between my toes. Thanks to GA for reigniting my love of gardening and helping me find the peaceful place of having my hands (and feet) in the soil and watching the beautiful things grow ❤

Fun fact, Van Gogh was using digitalis to treat his depression and one of the side effects is seeing yellow more vibrantly, which some theorize is why he was inspired to paint the sunflowers.

I've never found that hilling potatoes creates a heavier yield. Few potato varieties are indeterminate, and good luck finding that info in any way besides trial and error. But, the new potatoes form above the seed potato. So if you are not careful, the soil will erode and you will end up with exposed potatoes. And we all know those turn green and taste like soap. So continual hilling ensures that your harvest is well covered.

I did do most of my deck pots yesterday but didn't get my gardens fully cleaned out. All my perennials that I planted last year came back, which makes me so happy! Peonies, hydrangeas, mini skirt hostas, a fern, lilys of the valley, and more. I still have so many seeds to plant, but I've got to get my gardens cleaned out first! Easier said than done some days!

I planted John Creech sedum, a tiny budded ground cover, and it took along a stone edged, street side area, about 20 feet long. I am thrilled, after three other attempts, that it grew, and did a great job. What I find distressing, is the amount of time it takes to take out the weeds that continually grow in it. Unless I do this, the overall look is changed as the weeds fill out. The roots of the sedum are now dense, so to pull weeds sometimes means disturbing the established roots of the sedum, and it is time consuming.

Potatoes are determinant and indeterminant just like tomatoes! Indeterminant will benefit from hilling since they will continue to form potatoes all along the stem but determinant it does not matter since they form the crop in a single layer 😊👍

How do you manage to clean fall leaves out of your beds under your trees and preserve the integrity of your groundcover or other plants? I understand many people want to "leave" the leaves, lol, but we would have 2-4 feet of leaves on our beds if we did so. Raking isn't a great option as it tears up the plants and using a leaf blower takes out the majority of our mulch while many leaves remain embedded in the delicate plants. We are on a wooded property and I have a love/hate relationship with the trees. Every summer I enjoy looking at the beautiful canopy, but in the back of my mind dread the fall clean-up AND my beds are never the same. I find myself looking at your beds and shaking my head in wonder at how "leaf" free they are. Thanks so much in advance 💚🌿!

A David Austin arrived just as i was getting in the car to go to radiation therapy. The blooms are a coral color,an i know how much Laura adores that color,so i will name her Laura. Yes my plants have names. Won't be doing a vegetable garden this year, for i will have a lot of down time. Surgery will be coming up after i finish with radiation. I have a sarcoma in my ankle and surgeon is doing limb saving surgery along with a plastic surgeon to reconstruct my foot. Watching GA and being out planting beautiful roses, perrenials,an i even planted two crabapple trees that bloomed . Tho small they are gorgeous. Being outside and seeing everything in bloom is great therapy.

What are you going to plant on the other side of the long garden bed with the new ground cover, looks usually bare. Thanks so much for daily videos I’m sure I’m speaking for all of us when I say we appreciate it and look forward to them!

My daughter has a small flower bed for my grandson (8) and my granddaughter (6) and they pick up their own plants at the garden center when she goes and they plant seeds in their garden. That might be fun for Benjamin and Samantha out by their play set.

Your kiddos are getting so big! Time goes by so quickly. Keep enjoying your time with them. I have so many wonderful memories of my 2 sons when they were little like that. They are embedded in my mind. Photos are not necessary. 😊

Samantha has good taste 😅😂, I love rockcress. Great plant, very hardy and evergreen for me. I think it grows better for me in zone 5b than creeping phlox

Epimedium! AKA Horney Goat Weed. I've done a presentation at my local garden club about this plant.. LOVE it! I is amazing as a cut filler in bouquets AND it's entertaining that it's the primarily ingredient in Viagra ;)

Hi Laura and Aaron, I love your videos and have been watching you for years. Just a curious question are you certified for wildlife habitat since you have the pond now? All these beautiful pollinators and birds around your plants and garden but I’ve never heard it mentioned. i’ve learned so much from your channel and It brought peace to my life when I sincerely needed it. Thank you for all you do.

No more wooly thyme in between stepping stones. Bees galore, roots so strong that I couldn't get the weeds out. Struggled with it 2 years. Took forever to eradicate it.
