Planting Fruit Trees | Things To Consider And Avoid

Ойын-сауық

Planting fruit trees can be a huge waste of time and money if done incorrectly. Consulting forester Rob Haubry talks about the things you need to know and consider before buying and planting fruit trees - such as tree spacing, bare root seedlings vs. container trees, when to prune, and different species of trees that can help with overall pollination and ultimately the production of the trees.

    I like potted trees over bare whips. Planning on planting 4 more cherries and 5 apples for my 2 bee hives. Trying to have blooms to build bees up for berry season. Making sure I have proper cross pollinators. I was gonna plant clover or buckwheat under the trees.

    I actually noticed with where I got my bare roots at least, my trees were almost an inch in caliper size, only down fall is they literally cut the tree in half because it was too tall to fit it in the box, but it was a nectarine plum interspecific hybrid that should be pruned to an open center anyway. I would be upset if it was an apple though or something needing a central leader.

    Hi. I have an 8' peach tree in a pot that i forgot to plant in autumn. What should i do now? Im in nj, night temps as low as 10f. Should i bring in garage untill spring and then plant it?, because im afraid the roots will freeze up being above ground in a plastic pot. Thanks

    We would say at the very least get it into the garage, you could wrap a thick blanket around the pot to help insulate the roots. Also continue to water, but sparingly.

    Is the 25’ apart meant for semi-dwarf trees, as well?

    We don't love herbicide either, but we hate invasive species more than herbicide and some plants require herbicide for removal. If herbicide wasn't used our biodiversity would be much less and flora and fauna would suffer much worse than a landscape that we can manage with herbicide.

    How long will it take for the tree to bare fruit. Obviously it depends on climate of area. But this sounds like you are better off just doing a real nice food plot

  • @Whitetail_Properties

    @Whitetail_Properties

    7 ай бұрын

    It depends on the age of the tree planted. But typically for chestnuts 3-5 years from seedlings. The tree's planted in this video will produce this year or next. Food plots are great, and we use them frequently. But tree food plots are a one time investment and once they start bearing fruit/nuts, they will produce every year. Whereas food plots have annual input cost for seed, fertilizer, tillage work etc.

    Are you planting fruit for human consumption or deer consumption? I found your video while researching how to start a homestead orchard. I was hoping to find out how to keep the deer out. I’m really unsure what size and spacing to plant trees too, figuring I’d need to fence the entire orchard to keep the deer out. But wider spacing would mean more fencing. I like the cages you built. I’ve seen people put drain tile around trunks. Would that work too? We have over 80 wooded acres in fenton Michigan. I’m looking to plant 20 fruit trees plus several small fruits. I could really use some good advice!

  • @Whitetail_Properties

    Fencing the whole orchard is probably unnecessary. The cages tend to work pretty well to deter most wildlife including deer, rabbits, squirrels etc. Until the trees are more mature and less susceptible to damage. Check out our protecting fruit trees video in the tree planting playlist for some more good advice!

    Applying Roundup around the base also really helps trees get established (especially bare root trees) as weeds and grass can really choke out young trees. Round up, some mulch, then a couple waterings and your trees will be incredibly vigorous and healthy.

    Really. I just got done watching another channel and they said under no circumstances use round up anywhere near your new trees. I am trying to figure out what is with my apple trees but I get so much conflicting information. Planted my trees 3 years ago and they are exactly the same size as the day I planted them.

  • @Whitetail_Properties

    @Whitetail_Properties

    What if you don't have sheep? Or the time for sheep or another animal to graze it? They also most likely wouldn't graze it to bare dirt. We understand some don't like herbicide, but in some instances it is the best option - and in other instances like controlling invasive species, the only option.
