Hey there Joe! Congrats on that first apple tree. We LOVE apples here on the farm and it's amazing how much production you can get out of just one tree!

Just planted more citrus trees at my place. It's a huge investment in time before it pays off. I suspect these trees will be a similar situation. Labor of love these farms...

Congrats on those new trees! We're a few months behind you on those citrus trees and yes they really are an investment in the future. Once they start producing though, it's pure gold!! Truly a labor of love.

Just planted a bare root nectaplum. You two make it look so easy... I'm exhausted 🤪.

Congrats on the new tree! We have one of those also and had one on the old farm as well. We've never had a fruit from one yet, so hopefully they will produce well for us both!!

You guys need to have some children (6) To have you with your farm, my father made us for that reason and I'd love him for that. He was very good farmer 😁😁😁😁.

Yeah, that would definitely make for a lighter workload on the farm chores. Then again, that's 6 kids to raise, so lots of work there! Your mom and dad had their hands full with you guys!

Nice to take a break from digging up ginger all afternoon to watch something go into the ground. I'm over this winter already. Near freezing on Monday night again. See ya tomorrow.

Hey Allan! Ooh, ginger is something we want to try out here. So many culinary and medicinal uses for that root! We were near 80 yesterday and today is about the same, but we may actually get water falling from the sky this week!

We always worry they won't take and get excited for any sign of life in the spring. We planted a couple dozen on the old property and we only had 2 that never took, so there's some risk to it for sure. Then again, we've had potted trees just up and die after being in the ground for a few months also!

We had a giant Fuyu on the old property and it produced fruit, but we were never able to get the fruit to survive the bird onslaught of summer. Hopefully we can figure something out if we can get these trees to produce!

Persimmons are really cool trees. It's such a unique fruit and I remember my neighbor growing up in Los Angeles who had a few persimmon trees. It was amazing to see the fruit hanging on the tree after it lost all of it's leaves.

I've went a little crazy on buying trees I telling myself no more and yet i will be picking up more from Greg. I seem to have problem I see a new variety or a tree I dont have I end up buying it but I just say it's all good.

Hi Dwain, I moved from san Jose CA to queen creek AZ. I brought my 17 year old persimmon tree taken out ground and replanted here. we had cut to branches to accommodate tree in moving truck. I just had someone planted my favorite tree in my backyard in queen creek. I really want my tree to survive here. Could you please advise how to care for the tree. thanks

Hey there Ram. Congrats on your move from CA to AZ. We made a similar move from San Diego back in 1998, so we know just how you're feeling right now! As for your persimmon tree, the biggest issue right now is going to be the transplant shock. Anytime you transplant a tree there is some shock that the tree has to get past first before it can begin to thrive. We have had success with growing persimmons in full sun, following our typical planting, fertilizing and irrigation routines. If you check out our playlists and watch a few episodes on how we do these things it will help with your persimmon tree. Just keep in mind, the conditions here are far different than CA. We are much drier and have virtually no rainfall, so it won't perform the way you're used to seeing it in CA. The fruit is usually a bit smaller and you'll have to ensure it's irrigated properly. Watch the tree closely to see how it's doing. That's a great question Megan and the main issue is the possibility for rot from bacteria and mold. The chances of that here in AZ are pretty slim, but we want to give the tree every chance to thrive, so we try to make sure we get rid of those pockets where we can.

My nectarine from last year got hurt by gophers. Is there a way to know if it’s gonna be alive after dormancy? I want to know now so I can replace if needed. Also have an apple tree That got hurt by heat and lack of water.

Oh man, that's frustrating to hear about the gophers! The only way to tell for sure if it's still alive is to do the scratch test on the bark. If you take a small razor or your finger nail scrape back a little bit of bark and see if you have green in the cambium layer just under the surface. If it's green you should be ok, if not you probably have a dead tree on your hands.

Hey Randy. May and June is when we start to move into our summer watering schedule and most of our trees are being irrigated once/week with about 60 gallons of water. There are a few exceptions, but stone fruit, pome fruit, citrus, etc are all on that schedule.

@@randymelder For younger trees you can scale that back a bit for the first season. I believe we were at around 30 gallons/week with smaller rings that first season.

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm It is really hard to find much information on growing Persimmons in AZ. Maybe you could do a video focussing on them a little more some time? I just found a couple shots of fruit set in your recent videos. That's awesome! I recently purchased a Fuyu and I am really hoping I can figure out the best place to plant it and get it to survive. I read that they should get afternoon shade here in AZ, and also that the bark should be protected from sunburn in the beginning...but it looks like yours didn't get afternoon shade based on this video.

@@ep875 once we get a few to harvest we'll get an episode out on it. We had good success growing Fuyu on the old farm, but the birds got to all the fruit before it ripened. It's the same problem we have with our Fall apples. As for sun, ours are in full sun, no shade. We do paint the trunks though as even when they're older they don't shade the trunk all that well.

When are these persimmons ripe here in the valley?

Great question and that is the challenge. They set fruit in the spring, but they don't ripen until late fall or sometimes even winter. There are some cool pics online of ripe persimmons on trees that have completely lost their leaves from dormancy.

Glad to hear you're getting apples in 10b. We haven't had success getting them through our dry, summer heat. The fruit sets beautifully and looks great until we hit July and August. At that point the dry heat begins to damage the fruit and the tree ends up shedding them before they ripen. We're not giving up though and trying a few different varieties to see if we can overcome that summer die back that happens here in the AZ desert.

Should we be planting almonds in Arizona given the amount of water needed?

They have water lined to their trees in addition to trenching designed to collect water around their trees if it ever rains again lol.

That's a great question. Almond trees are essentially peach trees with fruit that has almost no flesh, so if you're willing to plant a peach tree you're good to go with almonds. We water all of the stone fruit the same and that would include almonds. If you're asking the deeper question of whether or not it's the right thing to do, that's arguable. We try to do what we can to mitigate evaporation and we also believe strongly that trees help to keep soil erosion from occurring when it does rain. We also do everything we can with our designs to capture water when it does rain and push it into the ground. Eventually these trees will not require as much water and when you consider the water usage we have here compared to the equivalent number of houses on the same space in the city it's actually much lower (we're on 6 acres which in city zoning can hold many houses). Sorry for the long response, but this is really a very good question and raises points that need to be discussed!!

That's a fantastic question and it really depends on a lot of factors. You can purchase moisture readers online that can help, but we focus on ensuring the trees are well mulched and watered heavily during the summer months. The mulch will help regulate the moisture a bit. We also watch the trees for signs of stress. In winter it's a bit tougher to see it, but summer it can be very apparent if there's too much or too little water. Leaves will wither with too little and get yellow if there's too much. One thing we have found to be true, it's much easier to underwater in the summer as opposed to have too much. Especially when they are well mulched.

I'm not sure what rootstock they use, they don't list it on the website or have it on the trees. We had a giant Fuyu on the old property that did really well, but I don't remember what rootstock it was on. I'm not completely sure how they'll do, but we do keep the trunks painted all the way up the tree once it starts to bud out and that seemed to help with the one we had on the other property. Last summer was literally a killer for trees, but if it was in afternoon shade it shouldn't have made that much of a difference. I suppose we'll have to see if these can survive!

Hey John. No, we haven't attempted mango trees on the farm. We're about 5-6 degrees colder than the city and mango trees at 20 degrees take supplemental heat to survive. Plus they are challenged in the summer when they're young. We may give them a shot in the future if we can manage the time to ensure they get the TLC they're going to need to survive. It's a tough sell when you have citrus, apples and peaches produce 100's of amazing fruit with little effort as opposed to a mango that you're hoping for a few to maybe a dozen fruit if you can manage it well.

Thank yo for such informative video! Very helpful. What kind of paint do you use for the trunks? Is it safe with all the chemicals? Additionally, do you have any videos where you provide tips and recommendations for building an irrigation system?

I was wondering if you have concidered the expected growth of each tree in terns of height in relation to other adjacent trees and how it will impact on shorter trees being shaded by the taller trees? I know Arizona gets a lot of light and heat so this may be of less of a concern than a more northen lattitude where the sun follows a lower path accross the sky compared to the higher path in Arizona.

G M, that is a fantastic question and you pretty much hit the nail on the head. We get abundant sunshine here during the growing season and we also manage the tree size once they're in the ground and producing to ensure we have that light penetration into the trees. We'll be doing a pruning series here over the next few weeks and you'll see we discuss that when making those pruning cuts.

Great question Kelly and we're not sure yet. I'm guessing it will be a little of both, because we're close enough into town that we can probably encourage folks to come out to the farm and enjoy the open space. It's also the age of Amazon and delivery, so we'll probably do more of that. It's what we use now for the limited things we produce.

Hey Martin! We actually buy the premixed paint from Home Depot. I'm told you can mix indoor latex paint with water in a 50/50 ratio and have the same product, but this stuff is pretty inexpensive and easier to deal with! I always second guess that drastic cut on a new bare root tree as well, but it really is the best thing for it.

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm You're working too hard as it is. Tell the boss I said to give you a raise :) Anything that cuts a few moments off that 24/7 long day on a farm is worth it. We used to buy lime, mix it with sawdust (if memory serves) and painted every fall with that. Keep teaching! Hasta, kids!
